Suddenly, an elf appeared behind him. It was Lydius. "Young mage, the Saradominist warrior wants you to return to the forest."
"All right."
Lydius led Kaisen to the meadow where King Aardi and Saren waited. As he approached, the bushes rustled nearby. Kalda came out. She was panting, and her face was bruised and cut. Her clothes were tattered, and she looked battered and beaten. She threw a silver urn onto the ground at Aardi's feet.
Aardi looked stunned, but he finally said, "Very well. The first task is complete."
Kaisen and Saren congratulated Kalda, but Aardi wasted no time. "The second task will be...yours, warrior."
Saren stepped forward. "I'm ready."
"Not here. I will lead you to the arena."
"Arena?"
Aardi smiled. "Yes, warrior. Your task will be a good, old-fashioned fight to the death."

The arena for Saren's fight was a strange location. King Aardi chose the fight to be held in an abandoned street in Lletya itself.
A small crowd gathered at a safe distance to watch the action, and Saren stood alone in the street. "Who am I fighting?" he asked.
"There," the king pointed. At the other end of the street appeared an elf warrior. He was dressed in elf crystal armor, and he carried a crystal bow and a halberd crafted from the same crystal. His armor was all crystalline.
"Meet your opponent," announced Aardi. "Your task is to defeat in battle the warrior Zorrath."

------Chapter Thirteen: Blood-Stained Crystal--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zorrath walked closer to Saren and bowed respectfully to him. "I am your opponent, warrior."
Aardi smirked. "This contest is over when one of you dies. Those are the rules."
Saren faced off with the elf. "I've waited for this," Saren said anxiously. "Now, it's my turn to be tested."
"You shouldn't be that anxious for your death," Zorrath retaliated.
Saren struck out at Zorrath, but Zorrath deflected the blow with his crystal shield. "Is that the best you've got?" he taunted Saren.
Saren roared as he struck again, but this time Zorrath blocked and, unsheathing his crystal halberd, swiped at Saren's leg. Saren sensed the attack and tried to dodge, but the blade on the halberd nicked Saren's leg. The platelegs were crushed inward at the spot of impact, and blood flowed from the open wound.
Kaisen was afraid. If Saren didn't pull himself together, Zorrath would tear him apart in no time at all.

Saren was at a disadvantage. His whip was long, but the range of the crystal halberd was longer. Zorrath could strike him well before he could attack. Saren scanned the arena for anything that might help him.
"Staying out of range are you?" Zorrath taunted. "No matter, I can still get you." Zorrath pulled out his crystal bow and fired some arrows at Saren.
Saren dodged, but he realized that between the halberd and the bow, his chances of surviving the battle were shrinking with every passing second.

"The warrior has no chance," Aardi commented, a slight note of joy in his voice.
Kaisen turned from the king to Lydius, who stood beside him. "Lydius, does Aardi want us to fail?"
Lydius's face darkened. "I believe so."
"But why? Aren't we doing what is good for the world?"
Lydius sighed. "We elves are not interested in outside affairs, especially Aardi. He separated Isafdar from the rest of RuneScape because when he was a boy, his father was killed during a conflict between Saradominists and Zamorakans. Ever since, he has become paranoid that either side is going to try and conquer us. He fears that if the dragon hatches, the Saradominists will kill us all."

"That's crazy!"
"This task is a win-win situation for him. If the warrior dies, he gets to keep the dragon egg. If the warrior wins, Zorrath will die."
"What's good about Zorrath dying?"
Zorrath stopped firing his arrows at Saren and turned to Kaisen. His eyes were gray and heavy, staring into nothingness. "Why?" he asked rhetorically. "Because I am nothing. My blood is worthless. I am the grandson of the great traitor. Because his blood flows in my veins, I am forever disgraced."
Kaisen was shocked. Kalda was appalled. From what the observer could see, Saren was unfazed. "I pity you, Zorrath. I am a warrior, so I understand honor. But, don't think that I am going to take it easy on you. Our fight will continue, and neither of us will give an inch."
Zorrath smiled. "Just as I would expect from a great warrior such as yourself. True honor will go only to the victor. Now, let us pick up where we left off."
