Zorrath struck, and Saren dodged. Saren was focused, a glare in his eyes born of the fires of a challenge. First Iban, and now Zorrath. He was getting his fair share of powerful opponents.
Saren parried another fierce attack, but the whip stopped short of its mark. Saren cursed under his breath. He was going to have to get in closer.
As Zorrath swung the halberd, Saren rolled beneath the crystal weapon and past Zorrath's defenses. He flicked his whip at his foe, and the it sliced its way across the crystal armor, cutting deep into it.
Zorrath swung his halberd, but Saren had gone. Saren rolled around behind the elf, ready to deliver the final blow.
Oh, how the tables turned. In mid-swing, Zorrath, realizing that death was all too close, moved his halberd behind him. The blunt end of the weapon caught Saren in the chest, throwing him away. Saren dropped his whip and collapsed onto the ground.
Zorrath turned and walked over to Saren. The beaten warrior was awake, but he was too battered to move. All he could do was lie there while the elf came ever closer, his halberd ready to draw life-blood.

Aardi smiled. "Looks like your friend is done," he remarked to Kaisen and Kalda. "I hope he doesn't get his blood all over the nice clean street."
It was all Kaisen could do to keep from attacking Aardi at this point (it also helped that Lydius was holding him back).
Zorrath looked over Saren's helpless form. "I have won," he proclaimed.
Saren grimaced. "Quit rubbing it in and kill me already."
Zorrath's eyes narrowed. "I don't think so. I didn't want to kill you." He lowered his weapon.
"What? Why?"
"Because if you don't win, the dragon will not be safe. And, even though I am an elf, I believe that it is right for it to be cured."
He turned to Aardi. "I concede the contest. Let him pass the trial."
Aardi smirked and shook his head. "I'm afraid that's not possible. The rules were clear. Only when one of you dies is the contest over. Now, kill him."
Zorrath's rage boiled within him. "And obey your orders? Never! I have lived my entire life in a village that hates me for something I couldn't help. I will die here, and the dragon will survive, and at least I will have done one decent thing with my life!"
Zorrath raised his halberd and brought it down upon himself. His crystalline armor became tinted with crimson blood, and he fell to the ground.

"No!" Saren shouted. Kaisen could tell that his pride was shattered. He shouldn't have won.
Aardi was shocked. He was forced to pronounce Saren the winner, though, as a tall elf in a black cloak removed Zorrath's body from the arena.
Kaisen watched as the old man carried him out. Then, he saw...but it couldn't be. That man couldn't be here. For an instant, Kaisen thought he saw under the man's hood, and it was Zharoun, the Sage of Trollweiss. The Sage smiled at him as he passed, and Kaisen was almost sure that he saw Zorrath's arm twitch slightly. This was a weird turn of events.
Aardi was beyond himself. "Come back in the morning!" he roared at them. "Then, mage, I will have your task picked. And believe me, it will be next to impossible!" And with that, the King left them.

-----Chapter Fourteen: The Greatest Trial------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The night passed slowly, and darkness seemed to linger eternally over the forest of Isafdar. Kaisen sat alone in an upstairs bedchamber, the gravity of the situation catching up to him.
The dragon egg sat in the fireplace nearby. "It's all because of you," Kaisen accused. He dropped his head. "All because of you. Does it feel good to manipulate the world like this? To consume my life?"
His heart softened. "Or are you just like me? You might not understand this conflict, and maybe you want out. Just like me."
Kaisen was left alone to run these thought through his head. Aardi had promised a hard task. Kaisen now had plenty of time to contemplate that the events of the next day would influence the entire world. The fate of RuneScape was in his hands. Though it had been so since he accepted the egg from Andarra, he had never thought about it before. In a century, would the history books be proclaiming Kaisen the hero, or Kaisen, the mage that failed the entire world? Or would there be history if he failed? He did not like to think what Agaben would do to RuneScape.
It all came down to the silver egg in front of him. The creature that had been leeching his life force since he got it was part of an eternal conflict, and he was now a part of it as well.
But he did not have to face it alone. Whatever happened, whatever sinister test Aardi had planned for him, he had his friends behind him. Saren and Kalda, and even Zorrath, who was willing to give his life for Kaisen's sake. They all believed in him, and he had their support. He liked to think that they would like him no matter what happened (even if it was not so).
As these thoughts filled his head, the sun rose. The darkness lifted, and the shroud of shadows that covered Kaisen was lifted. It was a new day, and this day promised to be the most important yet.

Kaisen picked up the dragon egg and carried it with him as he went down to the King's home. Aardi was waiting for him, along with Saren and Kalda.
"Finally," the king remarked impatiently. "We can begin. Follow me."
Aardi led them onto a rocky area neaby, almost to the mountainous region of Arrandar. They approached an open area with six elves in the center. They stood in a circle around a standing torch, and red chalk lines formed an intricate circle and symbols on the ground.
"Your task, mage," the King began, "will be the hardest yet. As this is so, I will have to ask for the dragon egg. I do not want it to get damaged during your trial."
Kaisen took out the dragon egg and tossed it to Aardi. His fingertips longed to keep it, but his willpower forced himself to relinquish it.

Aardi took the dragon egg and tossed it onto the torch. The egg landed squarely in the center of the fire. "That will keep it warm," Aardi explained.
Suddenly, all the elves cast a magic on the dragon egg. The egg rumbled and twitched in pain. "What are you doing?" Kaisen asked venomously.
Aardi smiled. "Preparing your challenge." The egg lurched. Suddenly, a bright light emerged from the egg. The maelstrom of light blasted through the mountains, and when it passed, the canyon was as it was before. With one exception.
"Mage, in your task, you must prove that it is you, not the dragon, that controls the quest. Therefore-" he pointed up above the torch, where the great silver dragon hovered above. The dragon was shining in glory, its silver wings beating ferociously at the air. Its claws were razor-sharp, and its serpent-like tail lashed around behind it. "-you, Kaisen of Yanille, must defeat the great silver dragon in battle."

In advance of your complaints, I apologize for the cliffhanger (needless to say, part 3 will be coming sooner than I expected). The tale of Kaisen, Saren, and Kalda will continue in The Cursed Dragon: Part 3, coming soon. In the meantime, post! Tell me what you thought. Even you unheard viewers. (If you insist on criticizing the cliffhanger, please keep it to a minimum)
Thank you, and see you next time.
