Sakura refused, so Mother blindfolded Sakura, bathed her in ice-cold water, and filled her mouth with smouldering coals. The pups wailed with Sakura. She still refused, so Mother poured molten lead in her mouth. Sakura obeyed. The pups cried with her. Every night, she remembered the spots they lied on her bed with her, where they kept her warm on many a winter night, later replaced with the next batch of motherless pups. She tried very hard not to, but in the end, Sakura obeyed Mother.
When other dogs got older, Mother ordered Sakura to use them as live hunting targets to practice horseback archery, just like the samurai of old. Sakura obeyed, no matter how much the dogs wailed and moaned from the arrows. To save arrows, Mother told Sakura to pluck the arrows out and reuse them. Sakura did not disobey.
Sakura’s foster father, the metsuke, provided plenty of condemned criminals to play with. She did not want to play with them, so Metsuke beat and cut her. She still disobeyed, so Metsuke called Mother, who blindfolded and bathed Sakura in icy water and poured molten lead in her mouth. Sakura obeyed. But she kept her manners, and had dinner with them the night before their big day. Every night, she dreamt of those routine friends she tied up. She appreciated their company. It was only after wet chops, contorted grimaces, and entrapped writhing when she would pile the arms and legs, and only then, did she grant her friends the salvation and peace they craved. She came here for justice, after all, and the heads piled higher and higher.
By the time she turned ten, Sakura granted salvation to over a thousand criminals. This saved time and money for Metsuke and Mother. Girlhood is about keeping Mother happy, after all. Those who entered Mother’s home uninvited were always granted salvation, too. Sometimes, Sakura refused or tried to run away, but Mother always found her. Mother always knows how to make Sakura obey.
