Chapter 1
Starry Night & Not So Bright
The hazy, smokened room whirled around and around, causing dizziness. The man looked upon a target to try and stop the pain in his temple that was beating with his heart as a composer would to keep the band in tune. The smell of tobacco and cheap liquor was tasted in the bar as he took a deep breath in. The room wasn't different from the other different kind of bars in the many cities that were stretched across the land, but this bar held the secret of a special kind of whiskey called “Shakey.” The name suited the drink because after a couple of shots, their hand started to shake into a slow and uncontrollable tremble.
The room also had nearly the same kind of people drinking heavy liquor, to finish the day. Some had their head on the table with their drink in hand, while others played card games and gambled their day's payment away. Most men in the bar were low class people who had difficult labor jobs that over-stressed their muscles, causing them to look bigger than the one next to them. There were some rich folks in the bar, playing a small game of poker in a corner away from the rest. They carried small talk, not wanting to raise their voices to alarm others of their presence.

“Hey Mitch, one more will ya?”
A dark brown bushy haired middle aged man, yelled from the counter. He had an unshaved face with hair falling over his eyes. He had dark emerald eyes that glowed in the terribly lit room, with a scar on his cheek that resembled an upside-down cross. His eyes lit up even more as he watched the rich ruby-red colored rum being poured into his mug. Before taking the rum in one gulp, the man gave a short nod to the bartender.
“Nathan, I know your allowed anything but your gonna clean me out,” said Mitch, the bartender, in a jokingly manner.

Nathan turned around and peered across the room. He stared at the large wooden door again, waiting for it to open and the right person to come through. And again there was no answer, so he continued to stare at the night's show in the Blue Moon's Inn. Nathan looked like a common worker of the vast city with his mud caked dark blue cloak, black old pants, and a white loose shirt. There were many similarities to the common man, and if anyone ever declared Nathan to be an outside then they were drinking too many Shakeys. A young man in a lightly tanned uniform looked up from a poker table and stared at Nathan for a second. After a few moments, Nathan gave a small salute with his two front fingers. On his left wrist was a tattoo that was different and uncommon. The dark green ink seemed to be burnt into his skin, revealing a bag of gold coins overfilled and spilled with a dark skull next to it. Most people saw the tattoo and thought that it was drawn when he was a reckless child to impress his friends, but there was a cause behind it.
Nathan pulled out a crumpled piece of parchment from his back pocket and read it once more to finish his job correctly. The difference that moved Nathan away from the locals was the fact that he was a thief. Not just a small petty small time thief, but one of the most hunted in the countryside. And coming here to Qualimin was just another job that would benefit Nathan in some way, only it would not be money, but legacy. Nathan was going to be forty years by the end of the upcoming fall and he noticed that with each passing year he moved slower and slower. Nathan had no love which meant no heir to his work, so he had to find a follower of his that would continue it and not allow his work to be lost with time.

The letter written in dark black ink stained the paper with the importance of Nathan's destination and he read it over once more to clarify it. He knew that he completed it and knew that he was in the right spot but what troubled him was the time. He was promised to meet at eleven o'clock and it was nearly midnight, allowing the men around the room to withdraw and leave to venture home.
Dear Nathan,
The time has finally come for your heir to come forth and I found the perfect person for you. Born from a wealthy family but still young for taming. Try to find the Blue Moon Inn in southern Qualimin and ask Mitch the Bartender for me. I'll try to arrive around eleven, but if I do not show, please feel free to get a room on my name. Till the time we see each other.
Safe Trip
Alden
Aftermath Drinks are on me.
Nathan asked the bartender several times for Alden's arrival, but he was told that he did not know. So sitting back down, Nathan waited patiently with no complaint and continued to drink until time flew away and the clock chimed midnight.
With his overhanging belly from the rum, Nathan turned to the bartender and arranged to use a room. “Room eight. Here's the key. Sorry, but it looks like Alden is working late tonight,” replied Mitch. As Mitch handed him an old bronze-made key, a cool breeze blew from the direction of the doorway. A man, crowded with his cloak around him from the blowing of the night's cool wind, stood there with a curious stare in his eyes. He wore a woolen kind of cloak that blew in his direction with his hood on, which nearly concealed his face completely. The thing that made Nathan notice at first was the twinkling left eye that was colored of a milk white blue; the man was half blind. A small grin spread across Nathan's face; Alden had arrived.

Alden was older than Nathan, but not much different from personality. Though they had their moments, there were times when they would draw croziers against each other. Those were the olden days though, and that had been when they were young. Nathan sighed, and with a hearty cry he said, “Alden, you old fool. Shouldn't you be in a retired home watching the fire burn in the fireplace?” They gave each other a small friendly hug, revealing their longtime friendship that they possessed.
Alden had a small white beard hanging from his face with little facial hair around his cheeks. His lightly blue right eye seemed to greet Nathan as well when he replied back, “Better to die with a bag of gold in hand than to live a life of nothingness." This was an old thief's saying. And with that, they unleashed a booming laugh. .
“Well please come Nathan. We must talk for I have some great news that I know you will like,” forwarded Alden. He lightly pushed Nathan towards a bench near the fireplace, to gather some warmth for the night. They sat down and Alden gave a quick whistle towards Mitch for a quick round of rum for the talk ahead. Nathan put his hands together and allowed his two thumbs to click together, showing that his mind was thinking through all the rum.
“Well Nathan I would just like to welcome back to your old home, Qualimin,” Alden said, giving him a large grin of welcome. Though Nathan hated this city he gave him a long nod in reply. “I've heard of your trouble in the kingdom of Avetnin, nasty injure as well last time I heard.”
“Yes, broke two of my legs falling from a castle keep. Damn guards chased me all night, but my contact helped me in the end. He lent me his horse and servant and we rode towards a river where I got a boatman to help me and then a doctor in the next town. Hell of a night, ... too bad for Meeno. Caught and hanged.”

“Yes, yes I heard. Terrible news, but thankfully you got away. Did you watch the - ”
“Hanging? Yes, I watched it in person from the crowd. Horrible shame, but I heard it's quick with the snap of your neck.” Nathan shook his head. His mind still wandered from time to time onto that scene. Mitch joined in and poured them a glass of rum that was from his 'special' compartment. Alden allowed Mitch to stay at the table, for if he couldn't be trusted then no one could.
“Now for a short business. I have a child for you. The child is smart, curious, and most importantly, untamed yet. We do know that the child was of royalty, for the clothes that was worn when we found it,” began Alden. Knowing him, he wanted the business to be quick, but to be understood.
“What's his name?” asked Nathan.
“Her name, and its Susan, but we named her Star.”
“It's a she?! Now Alden, I can't continue my traits, nor my accomplishments, with a girl. There is no hope for my work to last through the ages. She will die with the first assignment I give her,” protested Nathan.
Mitch started to chuckle a bit, which caused both Alden and Nathan to look over. “My pardon, but Nathan is right. A female wasn't made by the Gods to do anything but pleasure. Hell, they came for that or to pass on the father's last rights.” Alden looked over to Mitch and thought of his reply for a second. This was the last comment he had for Mitch, and Nathan knew it.
“Have you not heard of Banyolla? Was she not a warrior that took horseback for her dying father? Yes, yes they are, but a drunk man's lore has some truth to it. Has it not been told that?” and with that, Mitch fell silent. Alden looked from Mitch over to Nathan.

“Now, I don't have a lot of time to hear of a wise man's plea and disagreement, for I wish to dine and then sleep. But I will tell you this. She is somewhat of a person that does not only wield the blood of royalty, but is also a servant of Veritas. The God of Truth may have not chosen this path for her, but he did choose the path for you. Think it over, and with this I take my leave. Good night and I shall await for your answer in the morning. Ronald will stop by for it, and please take care of yourself, you look like a crazed wife's husband.”
“You none the better,” Nathan returned the joke with a wide smile. They shook hands once more and then took one last drink and Alden left the bar. After his cloak was eaten by the night's darkness and the door closed on them, Mitch looked over to Nathan. “Well, good luck with your student there. Let me know if you need a drink from a day's work, cause I'll be here.” Mitch took the jug and the three empty glasses. He looked at Nathan for a second and with a tiny grin he left and ventured towards the counter of the bar. Nathan was left there with dying candles and an empty bar, fiddling with his key in hand. Maybe Mitch is right, I will need a couple of drinks after this job is done, thought Nathan. He got up and left to go and find his room. With his mind still drunk with rum, and his belly hanging, he would sleep a night's sleep that only came once in awhile trying to calm down his protest for his would-be legacy.

Still your writing has a nice authenticity to it which makes it very original and entertaining.
“My pardon, but Nathan is right. A female wasn't made by the Gods to do anything but pleasure.”
