'Nathan help me' a crying voice begged. High flames were seen behind a shadowing figure laying on ground. Dark liquid littered the floor next the lying figure, while another one started to run away from the burning ruins. “Get her!” roared a cloaked man pointing at the flee person. Two men holding long sparkling spears started to chase, only returning empty handed. “You fools how can you lose her?!” “All is well for now, we may find the tattooed girl and she will be ours...” There was a flash of light and the Nathan woke up.

Chapter 5
Shadow Seekers

Loud galloping came from nearby, and Nathan still heavy with sleep started to rise from his sleeping bag. He walked over to Badger the horse, who was also aware of the nearby sound and pulled out his crozier. Star looked from her sleeping bag at Nathan, her eyes twinkling at him and she crawled under sleeping bag to hide. The galloping was becoming nearer and nearer and Nathan spotted a horse riding towards him, in the dead of night. The rider must have been asleep for he did not move, and he lay on the horses back with his arms stretched across the neck. Nathan still weerly from sleep glanced at the horse and the rider, slowly raising his crozier, watching the danger that it may possess. As he slowly saw the horse drawing near, he noticed a long brand of red hair over the tan colored horse.

He walked over to the figure and saw that blood was oozed on the horse's neck, except it wasn't from the horse but from the rider. Nathan slowly helped the rider's hair from out of it's face and saw the closed eye Claire. Her freckles under her eyes were the first thing Nathan noticed, as he yelled her name.

Slowly he moved her from the horse, placing her on his sleeping bag. He noticed a large patch of warm blood on her left shoulder and he ripped the shirt to reveal the wound. The tip of an arrow had sank into her shoulder, and Claire had tried to pulled out the arrow only breaking it at the tip of the wound. He slowly ran to Badger and pulled out his canteen, praising that he refilled it before nightfall from a nearby spring. Star started to move from her sleeping bag, and slowly crawled to Claire's side. The blood soaked into her shirt and now started to slowly pour out from the wound. Nathan poured the water upon the wound and saw that it was too deep in her shoulder, so cautiously he started to pull the arrow out. Claire moaned quietly, and Nathan stopped. “Will she .. live?” asked the sadden Star.
“I don't know....” replied Nathan. He started to rip his shirt into thin cloths and placed it on the wound. Star watching Nathan started to move towards Claire. Nathan still fiddling with the cloth did not make note of this and ran over to Badger looking for some dry herbs called Aglia, that helped to prevent infection.
A glowing light came from the corner of eye, and he turned around expecting trouble but saw that light coming from Star. She was holding the left hand of Claire's, and had her eyes closed with her head hung down. She was not moving not even a little bit, then the glowing stopped and she fell onto floor next to Claire. What just happened Nathan asked himself. He ran over to Star and saw that she passed out, but from what? He placed his hand on her head and saw that she would develop a fever soon. Looking back at Claire, he noticed that blood wasn't pouring from the wound anymore. Amazingly there was no wound!. Nathan looked closely, thinking that the night was affecting his vision but he saw no wound at all. No scaring, no scabs, not even a opening.

He noticed that the arrow that was inside her shoulder was next to his knee, and he picked it up, staring at it. Did Star just preform magic?
~ ~ ~
A few hours later, Claire has started to move slowly and groan for water which was a good sign to Nathan, thinking that she was dead. Star did not move, but merely laid there. When Claire finally came to, Nathan had prepared a small fire and brought back some water from the spring nearby. She pulled herself up from Nathan's sleeping bag, and looked around, unaware of her position. Nathan was by the fire, having found some herbs that he could make a strong tea with a small kettle. “Nathan...” Claire said blindly. She looked around the campsite for Nathan, and even when her eyes fell on Nathan, she still couldn't see him.
Nathan walked over to her side, and placed his hand on hers. She gave a quick start, and then asked for him again and he replied back with a quick yes. She started off into the distance not looking at Nathan, then he placed his hand on her chin and turned her to face him. Then it finally, struck him she was blind. Her cold light hazel eyes, were staring at him but she didn't know. Nathan looked down and started to weep.

“Nathan, you must get out of here. The Shadow Seekers, they're coming after you. They killed old Hurst and the tavern is in ashes. Please Nathan, you must run for your and Star's sake,” begged Claire. “Please don't go after them. It's not just two, but ten Shadow Seekers with men and swords. Please Nathan, I beg you....”
Nathan got up slowly, and saw that Star still had not awaken. He started to rush, and saddle up the remaining items on the camp ground. He saddled Badger, and the horse that Claire rode on. After he told Claire, that it will be alright and he helped her onto the horse.

Holding the reins and Star, on Badger they started to gallop down the rode. Nathan knew that the Shadow Seekers, will outrun them and that if he continued this way they would surely but caught and probably killed. He scanned his mind as quickly as he could, reminding himself of all the possible trails and hideouts that were on this trail. And then he thought of it. The sand script cave. He yelled at Badger to go fast, if he timed it right he would make it before the Shadow Seekers could.
They rode down the road, as fast as they could and they reached the fork in the road. A badly held sign sat in the middle of it, with two directions pointed out. “West the Durdor City, North Glamis.” He rode straight and saw that even though the day just started a couple of hours before, it was getting darker. He looked up into the sky and saw the clouds starting to form into rain clouds, and they were doing it quicker than normal. It started to drizzle, shortly after and then rain harder after about an hour. The common birds, and wild life scattered away into their holes, and homes. Nathan looked at the land scape again, this time concentrating on a special tree that he was looking for. He looked and looked, till he started to believe that he placed it. Starting to turn around, he heard a loud screech from down the road but he didn't see anything yet. He knew that they had to press on if they were to survive this day. He signaled Badger to trot slowly, and he looked at every tree on his right with dread and hope. He first looked at Claire, behind him and saw that her unusable eyes were starting to release water, and then he looked at Star that he held in front of him. Her innocence and sweetness seemed to filter the air around him, he had to find a safe place. He yelled at Badger to press on, and miraculously he saw it. An old willow tree with a hollow hole, near the bottom of it. He smiled and turned left off the road.

He hoped that the cave was still there, and in the way he left it. Though most people stayed on the road, he had his doubts on it. Off in the distance, he saw a cliff with moss growing on it like a giant blanket. Giant rocks hung to the cliff's edge, trying not to fall but that was just an appearance. Nathan had remembered testing it out, to see if he rocks would tumble down but his surprise they don't.
Nathan looked at the cliff, his eyes carefully looking at the edge of the cliff and then he saw a small opening on his left. He smiled and got off of Badger and walked over to the opening. He pulled away the moss and saw inside a tiny hidden room. A tiny broken table lay off in the corner with a straw bed near it. The cave was big enough for nearly three horses, so Nathan grinned knowing that there was just amount of space for them. He yelled out to Claire, telling her that everything will be alright. He walked over to Star, and brought her into the cave, placing her on the straw bed. Then he brought in Claire, helping her on a chair and finally the horses. He knew that the horses wouldn't like the tight space, so he placed covers over their eyes. He tied them to a rock, and sat himself in a chair near Claire. She was listening to what Nathan was doing, and she didn't utter a word since the time they left the camp site.
“Claire .... What happened to you?” asked Nathan, softly.
She looked around, not facing Nathan and started to weep. Her tears came down slowly, and quietly with nothing but the rain fall sound coming from outside. She wiped her tears off slowly, and the replied in a mumbling voice. “The Shadow Seekers. They came a few hours after you left. Men .... and Orcs burned down the tavern. Killed ..... Hurst after he tried .... to defend .. me.

One of the Shadow Seekers, kept asking about a tattoo. But I didn't know anything about it. Then he ask ... for you. 'The one who is a warrior against our kind,' he said. Then I betrayed you ... and told them you went down this ........ road. I betrayed you. Then there was this light ... and then darkness.”
Nathan stared at her. Not feeling any emotions for her or for his dear friend Hurst. He sat there, without having any connection to Claire. He had not felt any emotions when his friend, Meeno or anyone died. He only ... was there, to watch it unfold.
“Claire ... it wasn't your fault. If you hadn't told them where I was ... then you would have been killed like Hurst. Please don't cry Claire.” Nathan started to hold Claire in his arms. She hugged him and her breathing became soft and calm. He led her to Star and the straw bed, and she laid down next to Star holding her and fell asleep. Nathan knew that she would be tired after riding all of last night and tonight, so he let her to sleep. She didn't ask about Star and didn't mutter another word. Nathan was alone in his thoughts, with no sound to test or bother him but the continuous rain outside of the cave. He looked around the cave and studied the old appearance of it. The dry red paint on the side of the cave of old and mystic creatures loomed through his mind. When his horse became lame during his childhood and it was dark, with the dead of winter nearby. He found this cave by accident, and ever since then came to this when he traveled down this road. He remembered those long nights, where he stayed up late and watched the light from a fire dance on the cave's sides, causing the creatures to come alive.
Now with much time, in his hand he knew that those old questions would float back to mind, “Who drew those creatures? Why?” But these thoughts were too distant and not the time for them right now. He began to devise his methods of illusion and how he was going to avoid the Shadow Seekers.

He knew that they would think that he would travel to the city west of here called Durdor, but when they found out that he wasn't there, they would travel to Glamis. So he had to act quick. He decided to ride out this falling night, with the fog after the rainfall and let the Shadow Seekers draw their own conclusions. If the raining would not stop, then he had no choice but the continue the plan. For now he would need to sleep, if he was to ride away from the Shadow Seekers. He leaned the chair against the cave wall, and soon started to snore.

When Nathan came upon awaking he heard hoof beats from the road nearby. There were many horses out there and Nathan had an idea who they were. He knew that he shouldn't leave Claire and Star alone and defenseless but he had to see his enemy. He crawled out of the cave, carefully and quietly watching his steps and rhyme of his feet. Many times he walked past, guards with them unaware of it, but these were no common guards. They were Shadow Seekers and they meant business. He slowly walked to a old decaying log and leaned down on it. The hollow willow right across from him, blew a loud whistling noise. The forest itself, was quiet and dark except the loud hooves approaching him. He waited patiently for nearly a minute and saw a dark horse appear from the fog.
The rider like all Shadow Seekers, was dressed in a black cloak with it's face hidden. His hands and feet were covered in either gloves and boots, or the cloak kept it's secret. Then another one appeared after the first one, and finally a third. Their horses were called Demons, due to their unnatural look, and attitude. It eyes blazed a dark red, that seemed to glow brightly ahead of them. The first one started to slow and stopped near the willow tree, with the others to copy.

“Trotper, where is he ... ” hissed one of them. They looked at each other and just stared. Their horse demons still as a dead oak.
“He must have lead himself to Durdor, with the girl and the child.” hissed the third one.
“Then we must follow him, to the city. Onward Turner.” hissed the first one. Then the second one, named Turner started to lead off into the darkness. Finally they were swallowed by the darkness and lost in the road ahead. Nathan took his time as he walked back to the cave, allowing himself to think about that he just overheard. Even though it was small, it was just what he needed to hear. The Shadow Seekers are after Star, not him. So that must mean, Alden had already been visited by them. When he entered the cave, he say to his surprise that Star was up and looking at her surroundings. When she saw Nathan, she cried his name and ran over to him, hugging him tightly. “What's going on Nathan? Where are we, and is Claire alright?” She asked many questions and slowly as he saddled the horses, and packed up he told her where they were.
“When I was a older than you, I used to do errands for Alden. Remember him back in Qualimin with the white beard? Well one day, my horse ran away from me and it was winter and very cold.” Nathan said as he placed the saddle on Badger. “I accidentally came to this cave, when I was walking the forest aimlessly. First I thought a bear lived here, but I was too cold to care. When I found this pictures of creatures from looong ago, I promised that I would make this my home. That is where I slept in that straw bed and these chairs and that table, I got from an old hermit that used to live here. Tank was his name, but he died many years ago ...”
