This story is one of my faves.
-----

Kavlen jumped, barely avoiding the wire that came hurtling out of nowhere,

'What the heck was that?' he wondered, staring perplexed at the bush that the wire had come from.

He was in a forest, the unthreatening, green, leafy type of forest, enjoying a warm, pretty day with a walk in the woods. He didn't expect any trouble, so he wore nothing but light beige pants and shirt, accented with green edging and a supple pair of leather boots. In his hand he held a strong oak staff, given to him by his young wife, Lisle, on their first anniversary.

He lept to the side as a bushy branch fell from the forest canopy, something was up; he frowned, putting his back to a tree for safety and looking for any signs that an enemy might be near.

Something else fell from the trees, and he ducked aside, presuming it to be another branch, in this however, he was mistaken, as the "branch" stood up, brushing twigs from its hair.

The visitor turned out to be a man, about thirty or so, in good shape, juging by the muscles in the arms that stuck out from the blue t-shirt that he wore.

The man regained his composere and focused his restless green eyes on Kavlen, blond hair standing out around his head as he directed all of his energy on his victem.

Kavlen looked the man in the eyes, holding his gaze; Kavlen's mind was bent on the battle of wills, and failed to see the stranger'* hand move slowly to his scabberd, and draw the short sword that lay concealed there.

Suddenly the man broke Kavlen's gaze, darting the tip of his sword towards his heart.
It was pure luck that saved him there, as the blade neared its target, Kavlen fell to the ground, and the sword whistled harmlessly over his head. The reason why he had fallen?

While Kavlen had been matching wills with the stranger, his hand (the one that he leaned his full weight against the tree with) had been slipping, and at the moment when he life was in danger, it HAD slipped, causing him to grab franticly at the air, and then fall heavily to the ground.

However he had seen the sword go over his head, and he quickly scrambled up, his staff at the ready. His opponent had regained controll of the sword, and the battle was on.

Kavlen made the first move, thrusting his staff at the stranger; there was a loud 'thwack' as the staff hit its mark, and a howl of pain from the stranger.

"What's your name?" demanded Kavlen, in the lull that followed his blow, "And why are you trying to kill me?"

The stranger smiled, that in itself throwing Kavlen off more than any sword-stroke could have.

"You may call me Delcen, I kill for fun." Delcen's sword flew past, drawing blood from Kavlen's left arm.

"Fun, you kill for fun?" asked Kavlen, gritting his teeth and returning the blow,

"Yes, I do," laughed Delcen, turning aside the staff and retaliating with his sword, "I like it, it makes me laugh."

Delcen's blade came close, slicing the top of the staff clean off.

"Are you insane?!" yelled Kavlen, "You're trying to kill me for fun!?"

Delcen giggled, still fighting,

"Insane? Yes, I am insane, I am insane, yes." Kavlen shook his head, putting all his power into a hard blow and aiming at Delcen.

The staff whistled with speed, closer it came, closer, closer.

It struck a tree.

Kavlen attemped to lift it up, wondering why he seemed to have no strength. Was he hurt? He wondered, looking down at himself.

Kavlen got the shock of his life when he saw the tip of a sword protruding from his chest. It was also the last shock of his life.

He colasped, the staff falling from his nerveless fingers, the fire fading from his dead eyes.

Delcen laughed again, the sound echoing erily in the clearing.

Back in the village Lisle smiled, setting the dishes for supper. She had made Kavlen's favorite, and looked forward to sharing it with him.

In two days the body of Kavlen was found in the woods, lying by a tree.

And all because of a manic playing a game.
