It was the sharp, frost-bitten night that greeted the weary traveller as he stumbled towards the glistening sparkle of the lake's glassy surface. The last flecks of golden light had faded from the horizon's almost indiscernible outline, replaced by the cool gaze of the pale-faced orb that was slowly crawling upwards on the dark, bottomless canvas of the heavens.

A deep pain etched the man's rugged features, a pain that spoke of unimaginable tragedy and misfortune. He raised his large, rough hands towards the sky, and, turning his dead eyes towards the sky, spat forth a silent scream. A scream that cried of anguish and betrayal, and a deep yearning for something he could no longer find. His soul was lost, and he knew not how to rekindle the fire inside that had been such loyal companion to him for so long. Somewhere along his miserable journey it had deserted him. Left him for good.

This is what had brought him to this God forsaken wilderness. He had ran. As far away from his past as he could, with the hope of leaving it all behind. But no such luck, or hope, met him on his wayward travels. To let go of what he had done, was unthinkable. An impossibility.

Or was it?

He often dared himself to ask the question, but no matter how hard he tried to change it, he knew the answer would not budge. Not even an inch. It was set in stone, for eternity.

The guilt was too much, it pushed down upon him like a gigantic weight. He could not go back. And he could not go forward. He was stuck. Everything had been building up to this. A life for a life. It was only fair.

The smooth lake beckoned, it's cold shores open in welcome gesture. But, strangely, it no longer appeared as a dark, threatening fortress. Instead, a glowing warmth emanated from it's watery depths, engulfing his body and mind with a reassurance that everything would be alright. It gave him a confidence that he had not felt in a long time. It spoke to him, in it's soft whisper..

“...You killed her...”

The body was found the next morning, washed up on the pebbled beach of the lake. The corpse lay sprawled, it's white, bloodless limbs exposed to a biting breeze that skipped off the frigid water lapping repeatedly at the man's lifeless feet.

Two men stood solemnly over the body, one scrawled briskly upon a shabby notebook.

“Herman,” the elder of the two spoke softly, “You been reading the papers recently?” He asked, as he squatted down to examine the deceased man's face.

The man writing paused,“...no, haven't 'ad a chance, Ari. Why's that?”

Ari didn't answer, still casting his calculating gaze over the dead man's features,“Well, it appears as if we know the identity of our man who decided to take his own life...”

“...We do? Already?” Asked a somewhat confused Herman, his pencil still suspended mid-sentence.

“Did you hear about that recent case of that millionaire Mr. Hale being accused of murdering that housemaid at his home?”

Herman squinted into the distance, racking his brain, “...Yes...I believe so...” He paused, then, “Oh, I remember now! He disappeared a few weeks back, everyone assumed he ran away. A sure sign of guilt, I'm sure.” He finished with a knowing smile.

“Yes, indeed. But, what you may not know is that Mr. Hale was taken in for various medical and psychiatric tests at the time he was charged.” Ari was quiet, taking in the serenity of the lake and it's surrounds, almost oblivious to the body laying unceremoniously upon it's shore. Then he sighed, glancing down at the corpse of Mr. Hale, “it appears as if he was suffering, unknowingly, from some sort of short-term memory loss...something which may have caused him to believe he really did kill her...”

Ari retrieved a crumpled newspaper, and handed it to Herman. “There was also some new evidence found...”

Herman turned the paper over, and was confronted by a large picture of Mr. Hale's face. Accompanying the image, were four words:

Missing Millionaire: Not Guilty.
