Of course, this all had been a lie. The demons knew that the god of light, who created the Luminous Shrine, could not possibly create something powerful enough to destroy the First God. Even if, by some miracle, the First God HAD been destroyed, there were still five other gods more than powerful enough to handle the mortal races. In all likelihood, if the First God was destroyed, the god of light would annihilate them on the spot, if he did*’t do so for some reason, the goddess of order would probably do so herself, and if neither of them killed off the humans, the goddess of chaos would probably end up wiping them out in some accident, there was also a small possibility that the god of darkness would be sufficiently enraged or worried by the sudden boldness of the mortals, and act himself, and if all else failed, the demons and the Void would eliminate the humans. Of course, as the demons had expected all along, the Luminous Shrine was unable to even faze the First God. What, it had done, however, was reveal enough about the nature of the First God that most of the mortals had been instantly destroyed, their minds shattered by a knowledge to expansive for them to contain. Honestly, the demons had not been surprised by this, not even the other gods could comprehend the nature of the First God, and those stupid mortals had tried to force that knowledge into their minds.

All the mortals should have been wiped out, and would have been, had the First God not intervened. It shielded a small group of them from the full consequences of their actions, allowing them to be damaged, but not destroyed. The result was that the minds, bodies, and souls of mortals operated nearly separately, only loosely connected; because of this, the bodies of humans became little more than the bodies of other primates, weak and capable of decay; their minds were prone to wander, to work in unconscious ways, and to fail to recall memories and thoughts when humans tried to access them; their souls became easily manipulated and deceived, allowing the demons greater sway over humans than before.

Zaros nodded to himself thoughtfully. The desires of the body, mind, and soul were easily simplified into power, knowledge, and love. The first two, the empty lord understood well; and he knew that even demons could be convinced into swearing allegiance to one who could provide them, but the last… the last, neither he nor the other gods of Gielinor understood. It was something that transcended even them. However, from his vast knowledge he knew that once even demons had felt such things as love, pity, kindness, happiness, and sorrow, but that had been eons ago, before the mortal races had come into being. That had been when the demons themselves had served the being they now hated most; the First God.

The demons had had chosen their freedom over swallowing their pride and remaining servants of the First God, and had known exactly what they were giving up with that choice. The decision had been made once and for all; unlike humans, Zaros knew that the demons were naturally pure spirits, unburdened by bodies, other than artificial and temporary ones they made for themselves, because of this, when they made a decision about something, they made it with all their will, and could not reverse that decision; simply because they would never have an urge to do so. To beings like demons, every decision was an all or nothing; they had no doubts and no second thoughts about something that had been decided. Zaros knew this, and had taken advantage of it before with the demons who had served him. "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand. His Office is to teach all Arts and Sciences unto any; and to declare the Secret Counsel of any one."

Once their decision had been made, the demons rebelled against the First God, and attempted to overthrow it. The attempt failed miserably. The First God was far more powerful than any of them had thought. With less effort than a human would use to brush a fly away, the First God subdued all those who rebelled against it. It could have destroyed them all right there, Zaros was not foolish enough to think otherwise, but the First God had chosen not to do so. Instead, it had exiled them from the world it had created. This perplexed Zaros, who realized that simply exiling those that stood against it was an incredible act of mercy by the First God, but at the same time, was also an act of great foolishness. Zaros knew that in the Void things like love, kindness, and mercy did not exist, and were soon forgotten by those who entered it... He was likewise certain that the demons would do everything in their power to ensure that the First God regretted his decision to simply exile him. They would attempt to drag down all of the races it had created; bringing them into the Void to spend eternity in absolute suffering.

Zaros yawned. That was enough reminiscing for one day. He had much work to do in order to complete his goals. Caihoc, Ruko, Weva, and Kandarin would not be enough; he needed to find a suitable vessel to carry his darkness until the time came to open the Pandaemonium Gates and return to Gielinor once more.

Zaros shut his eyes, and began using his mind’s eye to search the Elflands. He already had a potential vessel in mind, and soon it found him; a half-elf named Orcris.

Well, new add, with a lot of background for Zaros.

And Orcris has been mentioned again... maybe he'll actually show up in the next add instead of being talked about.

Also, please feel free to comment between adds; comments give me energy to write more, I swear. (Incidentally, I am writing three stories write now, and one has recently been getting a lot of attention since people comment there more than on my other stories.)

Seriously, comments are good for the speed of my writing; if for no other reason than the fact that nothing makes me NOT want to write another add more than finding out I've gotten no comments since I last posted an add a week ago...

Oh, and an FYI, I will be out of town from tommorrow to Sunday (apparently, I have some wealthy relatives with a mansion, and at least my immediate family are going to spend Thanksgiving there.) If there is internet there, I will try to update, (there better be, it is a mansion after all) if not I will add when I get back. (Assuming I am properly motivated HINT HINT {see stuff about comments.})

Hey Aqua!

I don't know if you remember me but today is my first day logging in to Runescape in 91 days and I decided to check out your stories.

I was dismayed at first when I learned you were starting at the beginning again.

Now however I wholeheartedly believe that you made the right choice. The extra attention to detail is staggering and I hope to see it continue!

Orcris had lived in a small elven village all his life; his mother had been a human, and his father an elf. Even while he was young, he could see the other villagers sneaking dark looks at him, and telling their children to avoid him. Orcris had ignored this at the time, but when he was only six years old, he had found his mother impaled on a stake outside his door. After that he had never been the same. His father died shortly afterward, apparently out of a broken heart, and Orcris was forced to fend for himself.

This night found him kneeling before a crude altar which bore the symbol of Zaros. He had been convinced to follow the empty lord nearly a year ago by a traveling warlock named Ruko.

“Great empty lord,” Orcris was saying, “Grant that your vengeance may fall upon my enemies.”

-Orcris-

The half elf flinched. He was certain he had heard a voice, but as he looked around he saw no one nearby.

-Orcris-

The half elf’s eyes widened with understanding, the voice he was hearing was coming from within his own mind.

“Who are you?” asked Orcris.

-I am the god you have been praying to. I am Zaros, the empty lord.-

Orcris paused to consider the implications of what had been said.

-Rejoice, Orcris, tonight, I shall answer your prayers.-

“Thank you, my lord,” exclaimed Orcris.

-However, know this, I shall give you the means to exact vengeance, but it is up to you as to whether you actually do so. I will give you power, and you must decide what you truly desire...-

“I wish that filth dead, my lord!” exclaimed Orcris.

-Very well, but their blood will be upon your hands. I will protect you with my power, and give you the necessary strength to carry out your revenge. However, it must be you who actually kills those you hate. On my part, I shall grant you a gift, a gift that will give you the power you crave.-

A sword with symbol of Zaros engraved in its the hilt appeared on the ground before Orcris.

-Take this blade and carry out your revenge if you wish it.-

Orcris hesitated, but picked up the blade. The moment he did so, he felt an dark power flow through him. With this, he realized, he could easily get his revenge. So thinking, he walked outside.

He made his way straight to the bar, where the people he really hated gathered.

Inside, a number of elves sat drinking their fine wines after a day’s work, a few heads turned when the doors opened and Orcris walked in.
“Hey look,” one fair haired elf shouted, “It’s the mutt!”

His comment was met with rounds of laughter. Orcris shrugged and walked directly to the elf who had spoken.

“Got something to say, mutt?” asked the elf.

With a quick, fluid motion, Orcris thrust his blade through the elf’s chest. The elf convulsed, and Orcris felt a rush of power; it was as if much of the elf’s strength and knowledge had just passed on to Orcris. Seeing one of their companions dead, the other elves broke into a panic, allowing Orcris to quickly kill off each and every one of them. However, rather than satisfy him, killing those in the bar only increased Orcris’ bloodthirst, and he went out into the village looking for others to kill.

He killed all those he found outside, and barricaded the doors of the elven houses, after which he set tehm aflame. A few elves managed to make it out of their houses, but Orcris was waiting, and killed them before they had even noticed that he was nearby.

After the village was reduced to smoking ruins, Orcris stood looking on it. Finally, he had his revenge, but still… it was not enough. Now that he had experienced the exhilaration of killing, he desired more.

-You want more?- Zaros’ voice echoed in his mind, neither condemning or praising Orcris' desire.

“Yes, master!” exclaimed Orcris.

-Then aid me in my return to this world!- exclaimed the empty lord. –Kill those who oppose you, every last one of them! On my part, I will give you my darkness; you shall bear it and become one of my champions! Is this your desire Orcris?-

"Yes, my lord!” exclaimed Orcris.

No sooner had he said this then he felt a rush of dark power fill him. The power was overwhelming, and Orcris found himself believing he could take on anyone. Smiling maliciously, he turned and left the ruins of what had once been his village.
