In the Tenedra Marsh, the Zarosians had once again run into an impediment; a large, foreboding fortress built in the midst of the swamp. The windows of which shined with a greenish glow, marred only by the occasional movement.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ruko groaned.

“You say that a lot,” sighed Jayson, having grown used to the warlock making this same exclamation every time some new challenge appeared. “You know, this really isn’t a surprise.”

“Honestly, I wouldn’t care if this fortress had sprouted from the ground in front of our very eyes!* exclaimed Weva, “Odds are, the Mists are inside, and as such, we must find a way in.”

“You’re probably right,” said Taiyama, “But do you have an idea as to HOW we are to do that?”

Jayson grasped his amulet and closed his eyes, apparently deep in thought. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open and he shouted, “The foundation!”

“What?” asked Weva.

“I see,” said Taiyama, “This is a marsh, so the ground isn’t really firm enough to support the weight of a fortress, at least not if it is built by traditional means. In other words, the only way to build something like this is-“

“Magic!” Ruko interrupted, “Which means that the fortress is probably enchanted to have a type of buoyancy, making it “float” if you will, on the spongy ground, and thus there are no underground structures. In other words, if we can go underground, we can get into the fortress, or at least past the walls.”

“One problem,” Taiyama pointed out, “This is a marsh, if we try to build a tunnel, it would fill with water almost immediately.”

“A tunnel?!” exclaimed Ruko, laughing, “Oh isn’t that cute! Have you forgotten, Taiyama, I am a warlock with a multitude of demons at my beck and call! In fact I have just the one to help us in this situation!

Oh demon which claweth under the earth,
Thou demon, who poisons the land, bringing dearth,
To me make haste and now do rise,
Grant me power, and my enemies, demise!*

A little ways away, Aion sat watching the Zarosians while holding a piece of straw in his mouth, “What an idiot warlock,” commented the boy, “Belial used him to summon the Stakes of Hell, yet on his own, he still has to use mnemonic devices to remember the summoning incantations for low power demons? I’m far more worried about what Orcris might learn to do given the proper instructor.

Oh well, entertain me, little Zarosians, it should be easy considering what that fortress holds.”

With a sickening sound, what first appeared to be a mound of mud rose from the earth. However, after a moment, it became clear that the “mound” was in actuality a large, slug-like creature with thick, muck-like skin.

“Behold, my mud demon!” shouted Ruk*, clearly proud of himself, “At this point, I ask all of you not to scream, since it won’t make a difference, and you’ll just get a bad taste in your mouth.”

Taiyama was about to ask what Ruko meant, but was cut off as the mud demon slammed onto the group, absorbing them into its thick hide. Taiyama had a distinct feeling of disgust for a moment, then found himself on the inside of the fortress’ walls, with no sign of the mud demon.

“Come on!” Ruko exclaimed, “Let’s go!”

Taiyama looked up and found the rest of his group standing in by the front doors of the fortress’ main building. Without replying, he stood and followed them into the building.

Vates le’Coulevre watched from one of the fortress towers until the Zarosians were all inside the fortress. After the last one had entered, the leader of the Cult of Darkness turned to his side and said, “Your guests have arrived, is your greeting ready?”

The creature sitting in the far corner of the room raised its shadowy head and opened its eyes, revealing that there were glowing blue and flickered like flames, “Of course my greeting is ready,” its voice sounded like a myriad of whispers coming from all corners of the room, “They will not forget my hospitality for years to come.

However, I am curious, and thus must ask; how did you get in here, sir? Your abrupt appearance would be rude if you were anyone else.” The creature paused, giving time for Vates to smile before continuing, “Also, may I expect your help, or shall you simply observe?”

“This is your territory,” Vates replied, “Even we recognize that, as such, I shall not interfere, only observe. I will admit, I am very interested as to how a Reaper handles rude guests.”

The creature laughed; a cold, hollow sound which echoed through the halls of the fortress. “Well spoken,” it said, “Please, sit back, and enjoy yourself, sir.”

Very nice, I like what you are doing with everything. I definitely like the added detail compared to the first black pentagram. I also like your explanation of base magic and would like to ask where it came from or if that was your own take on magic? Because it is exactly like what I call magic. The use of your will to influence the world, and words to enforce the power of your will.

I also like that you have Orcris training. It helps explain things much better, and it is quite interesting at the same time. Of course I am quite partial I won't lie. Keep up the good work, I'm reading even if I don't have the time to post. Well have to get to class.

Orcris frowned as he looked at the pulsing walls of the “cave” that surrounded him.

“I admit it’s been a while since I’ve been in a swamp,” he said, “But I am absolutely certain they do not look like this.”

Taika nodded, “You’re right. A powerful magic blocked us halfway through the teleport. It seems some powerful mage is against us. Since we couldn’t reach our destination, we have become stuck here, in the abyss.”

“The abyss?” repeated Orcris, “Well, whatever, how do we get out of here?”

“We need to look for a rift that will take us back into our world,” replied Taika, “Until then-“

“That will take too long!” interrupted Rose.

Orcris turned to ask Rose what she meant, but stopped short as he noticed that her normal happy-go-lucky demeanor had vanished, being replaced by a frightening anger.

“He cheated!” Rose shouted.

“Who cheated?” Taika asked.

“Well, he can cheat all he wants,” Rose continued, ignoring Taika, “His power may be enough to repel a mere fire mage-“

“MERE fire mage?” Taika questioned, becoming annoyed.

Rose ignored Taika again, saying, “But he cannot match me. I am the Ruby Witch, the Witch of Dynamism, Evolution and Change. I will show that presumptuous brat his place, he will realize what it means to go against me, he will rue the day he tried to cross Chaos itself!” As she shouted, glowing symbols made of red light appeared in front of Rose. As if in response, another set of symbols made of violet light appeared in the air some distance away. With a shriek, Rose sent a wave of black and red flames from the red symbols to the violet ones.

“No!* shouted Taika, “Are you trying to kill us all?!”

The violet symbols held for a moment before disintegrating in the flames Rose had sent at them. As they were destroyed the abyss went through a transformation that made it seem to Orcris at least as if the abyss had been made of glass which someone had hurled a large stone through. Pieces of their surroundings fell to the ground in shards, and vanished, revealing a courtyard where the abyss' walls had recently stood. A burst of heat shook Orcris from his thoughts, and he quickly turned to see Taika sending bolts of flame at a group of tendrils which were trying to force their way out of a ball of red energy.

With a sickening sound, the tendrils fell from the ball of energy, burnt to a crisp, while the ball itself faded away.

“That was close,” Taika sighed. Turning to Rose she demanded, “What were you thinking? You could have killed us, or worse, destroyed the entire world!”

“But I did*’t,” replied Rose, “So it’s all okay.”

Taika flinched, and began shaking with rage. Orcris was certain she was about to strangle Rose, but before she could do so, a strange, whisper-like voice filled the courtyard.

“Well, that was an interesting way to enter my fortress,” the voice said, “I must admit, I did not think anyone could break through the base magic Aion had used… Nor did I think someone would ever try to push through with brute force.”

The Zarosians looked around, unable to identify the voice’s source until Taika let out a gasp. Orcris quickly looked in the direction that Taika was staring and noticed a large number of shadows gathering at the entrance to the fortress. After a few moments, the shadows took shape, becoming a young man with dark blue hair and glowing red eyes.

“Welcome, dear little mortals,” said the young man, “I am Mortimer, the owner of this lovely fortress and the guardian of the Mists of Time, which you have come to destroy.”

“Oh hell,” groaned Rose, “A reaper.”

“A what?” asked Orcris.

“I am surprised you know of our kind,” commented Mortimer, “But it is as you said, I am a reaper, a demi-god charged with collecting the souls and life records of you mortals once your time has run out. Of course, in my case, I have been given special permission by the Death Committee to reap souls from anyone who comes into this fortress. As such, I will wish you a happy travel to the afterlife, and bid you Bon Voyage.” As he said this, a scythe made of black, glass-like material appeared in his hands. Without pausing, the reaper lunged forward swinging his scythe at Orcris. The half-elf brought his sword up, successfully parrying the strike, but with supernatural speed, the reaper turned his scythe around and spun, cutting into Orcris’ back. There was neither pain nor blood, so for a moment Orcris thought the reaper had missed, then the world faded and Orcris found himself watching a young human woman giving birth, with a group of elves standing around her. With a shock, Orcris recognized both the woman and one of the elvin men as being his parents. He tried to call out to them, but found he had no voice with which to speak.

“The life record,” Mortimer’s voice echoed into Orcris’ head. “It is a recording of everything that a mortal has done from the time of birth onward. As it is being removed at the time of death, it automatically plays. When a mortal notices this they describe it as “seeing their lives flash before their eyes” when the record reaches the end, it will have been entirely removed from you, at that point we reapers take both your soul and life record to the hall of judgment where your afterlife is determined. In other words, right after you see me cutting you with my scythe in the life record, you will be dead."

-Dead?- the thought annoyed Orcris. -I managed to finally get my revenge, and get my shot at power, just to die in a stupid swamp? I refuse!- Still, try as he might, he could not do anything as his life record continued to play before his eyes. He felt a chill as his record reached his slaughter of his home village, not out of remorse, but out of realization that he was reaching the end of the record, and with it, the end of his life. He had all but given up, when a familiar voice shouted, “Stop!* As soon as that word had been spoken, the life record seemed to go backwards at an incredible speed, and Orcris realized to his surprise that the record was going back inside of him.

Orcris gasped for air as he found himself back in the courtyard, he was covered in sweat, and every inch of his body felt like it had been pierced with thousands of needles, but he was alive. Even the stench of the swampy ground was as pleasant as the aroma of good wine to him now that he had brushed with death and survived. With no small amount of effort, Orcris looked up from the ground and found Mortimer staring in shock at a boy Orcris recognized as Cruus, the asura that he and Aion had rescued from the Zarosian fortress the night before.

“A devil?” Mortimer asked, regaining his composure, “What is one of your kind doing here in Gielinor? And more importantly, why did you save this Zarosian?”

“That Zarosian helped me before when I was in trouble,” replied Cruus, “As such, I’m afraid I can’t let you kill him.”

“I can’t believe it,” Rose sighed, “A devil actually showed up.”

“Isn’t that kid the asura from the fortress?” asked Taika.

“Yes,” replied Rose, “Cruus Garna Rebnoir, the younger of Countess Rebnoir’s twin sons, who is rumored to have connections to Aion le’Colombe.”

“Wait a minute,” said Taika, “You know his full name, and apparently some other things that I doubt a normal person would know. On top of that, you used base magic back in the abyss, and generated enough power to shatter someone else’s base magic and force your way into Gielinor. Who exactly are you?”

“I told you before,” Rose replied sounding far more innocent, “My name is Rose.”

“She’s definitely hiding something,” commented Taika.

“Rebnoir, huh?” said Mortimer, “So you’re her son, well, in that case, I suppose you actually have authorization to return someone’s life record, but do you really intend to allow these Zarosians to reach the Mists of Time, created by Erebos himself?”

“Regarding that,” replied Cruus, “I have this letter.” The asura handed a sealed envelope to the reaper, who took the envelope, opened it, and read the contained letter.

“How interesting,” said the reaper, “In that case, you Zarosians seem to be in luck. You are being allowed access to the Mists of Time.”

“What?” asked Taika, “What’s with the sudden change of heart?”

“I have simply been given new orders,” answered Mortimer, “It appears that those of us loyal to Erebos are becoming neutral to Zaros’ attempt at destroying the Black Pentagram. Now follow me.”

Without waiting to make certain he was obeyed, the reaper walked into the fortress.
