“Well, this is quite a sight,” commented Caihoc, observing the large number of troops preparing to leave Edgeville.

“So these are all soldiers en route to the Winds?” asked Orcris.

“According to my spies, yes,” replied Caihoc.

“With such a force, it shouldn’t be very difficult to destroy the Winds,” said Taiyama, “But there will be opposition, won’t there?”

“Most likely,” said Caihoc, “Still I expect an early victory… Come then, let’s join with this army. They may need our support.”

Glancing around furtively, a white knight entered one of the army's supply tents. After being satisfied that no one else was around, the knight proceeded to dump a large quantity of block powder on the crates of weapons and supplies. He was just preparing to leave when a gruff voice shouted, “Hey! What are you doing here?”

The knight looked up to see a dwarf engineer standing in the tent’s entrance. Without a moment’s hesitation, the knight unsheathed a dagger and slashed the dwarf’s throat.

The dwarf tried to shout out, but instead only managed to make a gurgling noise as his own blood filled his throat. A few seconds later the dwarf was dead, and the knight was standing outside the tent with a lit torch in hand. The knight tossed the torch behind him into the tent where it ignited the black powder, causing an explosion which consumed the tent and everything it held.

Back in the monastery, Sir Vey looked on in horror at the fireball which had recently been one of his supply tents.

“Well, that was fast,* Asura said stoically.

“What do you mean?” asked Sir Vey.

“That is obviously the work of the cult of darkness,” replied Asura, “Apparently, they were prepared to attack in a moment’s notice if we chose to disregard Vates le’Couleuvre demands.

Tell your best troops to guard the other supply tents, it’s likely that Vates has troops all over the place, and I doubt that will be the only attack we suffer before reaching our destination.”

"As you wish," said Sir Vey.

“Sir Vey!”

The leader of the temple knights sat up and blinked. Judging from his own grogginess, he couldn’t have slept more than a few hours, so it couldn’t be time to move out. Yet someone had definitely called out his name.

“Sir Vey!” the voice repeated, and soon after its source became apparent; a young woman who had recently joined the temple knights burst into his tent.

“What is it?” asked Sir Vey, forcing himself to stand.

“Three of our commanders are dead; two had their throats slit, and another seems to have been suffocated,” replied the temple knight.

“Saradomin’s beard!” exclaimed Sir Vey, walking toward the exit of his tent.

“Sir Vey!” another voice shouted, this one a man’s.

A moment later a white knight entered the room, he appeared surprised for a moment as he saw the temple knight.

“I already told him about the assassinations,” said the temple knight.

“Good,” said the white knight, regaining his composure, “Does he know about the poisoned supplies?”

“The what?” Sir Vey asked.

“Some druids recently discovered that about half our food and water supplies have been poisoned,” reported the white knight, “Thankfully, most of the people who have become poisoned were cured before they suffered irreversible damage, but still the incident is disturbing… I have a letter here from Sanfew regarding the situation.”

“Bring it here,” said Sir Vey.

The white knight approached Sir Vey and handed him a sealed letter, which Sir Vey proceeded to open. He was reading the letter when the temple knight shouted, “Look out!”

Sir Vey looked up and barely managed to dodge a dagger that the white knight stabbed at his chest. While the the dagger missed his vital organs, it still manage to puncture Sir Vey's shoulder.

“What are you doing?” demanded Sir Vey, cursing himself as he noticed his blade was lying next to his bed; a good meter away.

“Unfortunate,” said the white knight, “I was not expecting that lady here… nor did I think she would notice in time to warn you…

You have been a pain in our side for too long, Sir Vey, it is time you were eliminated.”

“As if I’d let you!” shouted the woman standing at the doorway, “Prepare yourself, cur!” So saying she dashed toward the white knight, her sword drawn, however, the white knight simply sidestepped the attack, slashing the female knight’s side as he did so. Still, the distraction she caused allowed Sir Vey to grab his sword and face the white knight.

“Think you can match me?” asked the white knight.

“I believe that I am the better swordsman here,” replied Sir Vey, “You will not best me in a fair match.”

“True,” said the white knight, “But who said I’d fight fair?”

“It won’t matter, you craven cur!” shouted Sir Vey, charging at the white knight. The white knight sighed and blocked Sir Vey’s sword with his dagger. Sir Vey smiled to himself, and with a kick to the ribs, knocked the white knight off balance, but before he could make the finishing blow, Sir Vey’s vision blurred, and the leader of the temple knights collapsed.

“Poison,” spat Sir Vey.

“Correct,” replied the white knight, “All my weapons are covered in poison, so when I stabbed you with that dagger… well, you get the idea. Now, time to deal with that obnoxious meddler.” So saying, the white knight turned to the temple knight that had preceded him to the tent. She was currently lying on the ground, and breathing heavily, the poison having taken its toll on her.

“Farewell,” said the white knight, raising his dagger. However, before he had finished off the girl, a voice behind him shouted, “Hold it right there, traitor!” Turning, the white knight found himself face to face with a group of temple knights, all armed to the teeth, and several pointing crossbows at him.

“Tsk, what a pain,” sighed the white knight, “I won’t fight against these odds, but don’t worry, you haven’t seen the last of me.” As soon as he finished speaking, thick smog covered the tent’s interior and the white knight simply disappeared.

“Shall we search for him?” asked one of the temple knights.

“No,* said another, “We must tend to Sir Vey and the girl first. Besides, by now, the traitor will have managed to make a clean escape.”

“Sanfew!”

The leader of the druids turned and found one of his subordinates standing in front of him, as pale as a ghost.

“What’s wrong?” asked the druid leader.

“Assassins-” gasped the druid, “Three temple knight commanders dead- Sir Vey in bad condition- -poisoned- -needs help.-“

“Sir Vey is poisoned?” repeated Sanfew, “We must hurry; our knowledge of herbs will come in handy.”

As soon as Sanfew had turned, the second druid smiled, and shifted his form to that of a mix between wolf and man. With a snarl he jumped forward, his claws reaching for Sanfew’s neck. However, the druid was too fast and quickly turned, slamming a silver dagger into the werewolf’s torso. The werewolf yelped and jumped back, glaring at the druid leader.

“Did you really think I’d let my guard down so easily?” asked Sanfew, “Be thankful I missed your vital organs.”

“Very impressive, master druid,” snarled the werewolf, “But, our operation has still mostly been a success, the Armadylyst commander is dead, and Sir Vey might soon follow. And of course, the excitement isn't over yet, we have more surprises in store for you.”

Before Sanfew could reply, the werewolf had turned and taken off.
