CHAPTER 3-THE WINDS OF CHANGE
It is said with the birth of our world came the birth of the four primordial gods; Ananke, goddess of order, who watches over the laws of the universe and safeguards the past; Erebos, god of darkness, who guards the secrets of the universe and sees that the dead reach their place of rest; Khaos, goddess of chaos, who is the driving force behind evolution, and who rules the future; and finally Aither, god of light, who safeguards life and the living. These four gods are said to have been created by the First God as he formed the universe. However, it is said that in addition to our universe, the First God created another world, a world that was purely spiritual.
According to the ancient texts, the First God created pure spirits to inhabit this other world. Many were glad to serve the First God, and swore their unending loyalty to their creator. There were some, however, who rebelled against the First God, and attempted to destroy the very one who created them. In response, the First God exiled these rebels from the worlds he had created, sending them into the Void, the nothingness which existed before the First God formed the universe. Yet, the First God did not destroy these rebels, and over the eons, they built their own world, as treacherous and evil as their own hearts, then, consumed by their hatred for the First God, they found their way back into the mortal realms, and now spend their time attempting to destroy all that the First God has created. Over time, mortals have come to refer to these spirits as demons, devils, and evil gods; many heroes have had their lives forfeited to these ancient beings.
