The fight with Lucien had abated somewhat, and he had not made any moves so far. Gregory was glad to have the help of a Mahjarrat in the upcoming fight, and had set up his citadel so that the turrets could hold power.
Let me explain. In the beginning, when he learned to cast spells without runes, he could only cast it a little before he ran out of power. Casting spells drained his power, and the more practice he got, the more spells he could cast before his power was drained. The Stone of Jas rejuvenated his power to a certain extent and made his power last longer, and the Staff of Armadyl also made his power last longer. This is why those two artifacts were so significant to Lucien’s success. Whichever side could cast the longest would win, and if one side ran out of power, they would be defeated.
This power was replaced by rest, meaning that if he had a place to store his power, he could charge more by rest, and then spend it, charge more, then spend it, until he had a massive amount of power in reserve to draw on if he himself got drained. He continued this process in this citadel of constant resting to charge and then casting the pure energy into the citadel itself, effectively using it as a battery, to hold his power until he needed it.
Of course, if he used runes, the runes would hold the power, and that is what mages all over Runescape could do. Really, even the mages of immense power among adventurers had no real power, as they had not truly obtained power in themselves; they simply used the power in runestones as the source, and trained themselves to manipulate it.
And where did runestones come from? Well he had no idea, but he imagined he could create them himself if he tried.
He charged his citadel for many days, effectively making it so that he was just as indestructible at his citadel as Lucien was at his fortress, except that only Gregory could draw the power from his citadel, no one else.
