CHAPTER 3

He was late, so very late, but he did*’t care. This was his party, and he would be late if he wanted to be. Besides, all of those people were waiting for a pretty people, who was he to defy their expectations? Nobody knew he was in the bathroom, or that the bathroom door was locked. He couldn’t prepare in his own house. Ashley would find out. Ashley, God rest her soul, always had a way of finding out things, no matter how hard Valkyrie tried to hide them. Maybe the way why he loved her?

The lights in the bathroom showed Valkyrie perfects, he almost wished the party was to be held in here and not in that big, fancy, expensive hall. Sure, it had a few chandeliers, like fifty tables, and décor suitable for the Royal One himself. But, Valkyrie being the simple man he was, the regality of all of this was wasted on him. He would’ve been happy with a nice get together at home.

There wasn’t really anything worth celebrating. He was just turning twenty five. Everyone does it, it’s no big deal. Valkyrie couldn’t even believe it, today went by at a startling pace. It was almost like a dream, he did*’t even know how he got here.

He looked at himself in the mirror in his black shirt, suit, pants, shoes, and tie he did*’t look like a twenty five year old. More like a forty year old, with a fit body, late for his job at the office. It’d been twenty minutes of self examination, and Ashley was probably getting worried. Valkyrie decided there was nothing he could do for his hair, so he unlocked the bathroom door and left.

The hallway to the ballroom was decorated with flowers and pictures of Valkyrie’s past. Like, when he learned to ride a bike, when he caught his first fish, when he graduated, and when his father miraculously came back from the dead in his hospital bed. In every picture he looked happy. In that moment, he realized his life was full of happiness. He couldn’t think of anything that had possibly gone wrong.

And it was all because of his friends and family. There were there for him while he was down, tolerated him when was overexcited, and was right by him during every major event in his life. They were all in that one ballroom. There they waited for him, patiently.

Like targets, sitting ducks, all waiting for Valkyrie to—

No, no… he’d stopped this train of thought, disappointed in himself. Dr. Stone would be disappointed in him. It’d been months – years, even! – since he’d thought such hateful, homicidal thoughts. He was better than that.

He wiped his face on his sleeve, the fresh scent of his clothes catching him off guard, and entered the ballroom. An eruption of lights and sounds greeted him, putting a grin on his face. But something strange happened. An image of the sleaziest club in Crater City flashed before his eyes. Teenagers were screaming, covered in blood, and a short, pale woman stood just inches away. Ashley lay lifeless and bloody on her floor. Her neck ripped open. But, just as the image appeared it disappeared.

Valkyrie wiped his face again, not sure what to do with this image, and he did*’t have much time to think about it. Ashley was approaching.

“Honey!” she whined in the high pitch whine she did. “Happy birthday!” She pulled Valkyrie’s face for a kiss, and nearly sucked in his face. “What took you so long?”

Valkyrie pointed to his hair and smiled, “You know how I can be sometimes.” He looked around the room, at all the different people. Some family, some friends, and some he did*’t even know he knew. “I can’t believe you did this all for me.”

Ashley smiled smugly, and gestured to a wrinkled old man at the other side of the room. “Well, you father helped as much as he could. He wanted to be a part of this. He had this big, long reason. It was a tearjerker – you know how I can be – I just can’t remember it.” She burst into a fit of girlish giggles, the same giggles that made Valkyrie fall in love with her.

Valkyrie’s father was old, wrinkly, and looked like he was ready to die. Valkyrie felt bad for his frail state, but he felt even worse at the fact he wanted to kill him, and put him out of his misery… he felt pretty bad he could barely remember him. In fact, he couldn’t remember anything significant before today. He wanted to mention his lapse of memory to Ashley, was his wife after all, but something told him not to.

It was like a voice in his head, like a second conscience, that told him to ignore anything he was thinking. Or to ignore anything that seemed off. The voice claimed everything was Valkyrie’s fault. He was a bad person. A bad son. A disgra—

“Happy birthday, son,” Valkyrie’s father wheezed, taking Valkyrie’s hand and shaking it. Valkyrie did*’t know how to react, he did*’t remember this man. So he stared blankly at him and smiled, just like the voice told him.

‘Smile and nod, smile and nod.*

*Thanks, dad,” said Valkyrie. “Good to see you.” In a way, that wasn’t a lie. Something about seeing his father made him happy, almost too happy. Almost unbelievably so.

His father smiled and waddled over to his table, where his mother sat. He greeted her with a kiss, and then they immersed themselves in what looked like interesting conversation. They were disgustingly cute.

Valkyrie couldn’t stand—

“Hey, honey, you have so many people to greet!” Ashley called out from the other side of the room.

“Okay, honey!” He shuttered at the word. “I’ll be right there!” he replied, and prepared himself to deal with his relatives.

They weren’t as bad as Valkyrie thought. Him being there wasn’t really necessary. The greetings were routine, a routine that did*’t even require Valkyrie speaking. Ashley took care of the actual greeting, saying, “Welcome to Val’s twenty fifth!” Valkyrie did*’t like it when she called him ‘Val’, but he did*’t let it show. After she greeted them, he would either do one, or both, of two things. If his guest was a man, he’d shake his hand. If his guest was a female, he would hug her. Or, if they wanted, he would give them both. Things were going smoothly, until Valkyrie met Steve.

Steve Parker was a painter known all around the Mainland, and he was married to Ashley’s best friend Julia. He was smart, insightful, aware of current affairs, funny, attractive, and a complete jackass. Valkyrie was soon going to find out the brilliance of his mind was wasted by the arrogance of his mouth.

As soon as Ashley and Valkyrie approached the table, the meeting was dead. Steve, in his expensive blue suit and pants, leaned into Julia’s shoulder and whispered, “So that’s the psycho?”

‘Ignore it.’

Valkyrie pretended not to hear him, relishing in the fact that Julia was… playfully… scolding Steve. Ashley immediately initiated a greeting. “Welcome to Val’s twenty fifth!” She leaned down and gave Julia a kiss on the cheek, and waved to Steve. Valkyrie stepped in and gave Julia a hug.

“Aw, thanks, you guys! Thanks for inviting us!” Julia was as beautiful as ever in her green sequined dress. Valkyrie always did think she was more attractive than Ashley, but sometimes life gives you a path and you have to follow. Sometimes you have no control.

Steve took Valkyrie’s hand and shook it. “Happy birthday… Val…” said Steve, sarcastically. “You know, I gave up a dinner date with the Royal One himself for your birthday.”

‘Little *******…’ Apparently, the voice in Valkyrie’s head did*’t like the pompous ***** either.

Valkyrie understood Steve’s brand of taunting, Dr. Stone warned him of it. Dr. Stone warned him of that type of person in general. His success wasn’t an achievement that would uplift him, but another weapon in his arsenal to bring down others. Valkyrie was more than ready to ignore him.

“We’re tight friends… with the Royal Family,” Steve bragged, emphasizing each word to make Valkyrie feel worse about himself.

Valkyrie was content with ignoring him, he’d turned and started to leave already, but, unfortunately, Ashley wasn’t that dismissive. “Val’s friend s with the Royal Family too! Dr. Jennifer Stone, isn’t that right, honey?”

“Yeah, honey. Isn’t she your psycho therapist?” Steve interrupted, emphasizing the word psycho. His sarcastic was beginning to annoy Valkyrie to the point he could no longer ignore it. Steve had ignited a flame that was long subdued. “You never had a job, is that right? Before you met Ashley, you killed people. I was painting long before I met Julia,” Steve taunted. He kissed Julia obnoxiously, completely away that everyone’s eyes were on them. “You were nothing but a common murder.”

The voice in Valkyrie’s head screamed for him to ignore Steve, but it’s intensity was slowly beginning to fade. Valkyrie did*’t care about his conscience at the moment. Steve’s attack was blatant, relentless, and random. He seemed to make a living out of making Valkyrie’s life miserable. Valkyrie wasn’t going to have it. Everyone’s attention was on the situation, and they all waited for Valkyrie’s response eagerly.

“You’re right. I was a murderer. Or, if you want to get technical, I was a serial killer. My best friend was a stainless steel knife I used to kill my victims. It was a bloody life style, but at least it was one. I know how you draw, Julia told me. You sin in your study, easel in place, and you think of all the things you wish you’d done. And you’d paint them. Things you wish you did, places you wish you saw.

“Well, I’ve done them. I’ve been around the Mainland.

“I’ve lived. More than what you can say.”

He felt triumphant, but he was the only one. The ballroom reeked with shame and disappointment. They were all expecting a apology, but Valkyrie wasn’t about to comply.

“Relax,” sighed Steve. “Don’t go and kill me, now**

What once was a spark was now a full on inferno. Valkyrie was enraged. He wiped his face clean of sweat and shouted, “At least I love my wife! I’m not just in it for her vag—”

“Hey!” Ashley took charge of the situation, pushing Valkyrie aside. The entire hall rumbled with suspicious chatter. Julia turned her attention to Steve, whom she scolded vigorously. Ashley rested her hands on Valkyrie’s shoulders, and whispered, “Honey, what’s wrong?”

Suddenly, Ashley began to change. Her skin began to pale, and her flesh began to rot. A **** formed across her neck, and her clothes morphed into rags. She was drenched in blood. “Honey, what’s wrong?” Instantly, she was back to normal.

“I hate him.”

“Yeah, well… we all do. Don’t worry; Julia’s talking to him right now. Don’t worry about it. We’re not going to let anyone ruin your birthday,” she said comfortingly, smiling. “I love you.” She kissed him, but Valkyrie did*’t feel any better. All he could think of was how he saw Ashley earlier. He felt as if he was kissing a corpse.

He nodded, and the two of them went back to the party, like nothing ever happened. The party resumed accordingly. People chatted, cake was served, music played, and, for hours, Valkyrie watched Steve Parker. He felt like a hunter. It felt… right.

“I’ll be right back,” Steve said before he got up and left the table. “I have to use the bathroom.”

Finally, thought Valkyrie, an opening.

Little did Steve Parker know, it was the last time he would ever need to use the bathroom. Valkyrie did the same, kissing his wife goodbye, and followed Steve out of the ballroom, down the hall, and into the bathroom.

Steve was washing his hands, his head nearly two inches away from the mirror. Valkyrie grinned and approached his prey.

“Hey, Steve, I’m sorry about earlier. No hard feelings?”

“Valkyrie, don’t.”

“No, I mean it. I’m sorry.”

“Valkyrie, no. I mean it. I don’t like you. Don’t apologize.”

“Good, because I was lying.”

And with that was there final exchange. Steve did*’t even care enough to look at Valkyrie. Valkyrie grabbed the back of Steve’s head and bashed it into the mirror several times, and then into the sink. Steve Parker fell to the ground like a rag doll. Valkyrie grabbed a shard from the shattered mirror and knelt down next to Steve’s lifeless body. Ruthlessly, he stabbed Steve Parker until his body was liken to Swiss cheese.

He dropped the shard, his hands drenched in blood, and got up. The bathroom floor was pooled with blood, and strips of Steve’s skin were thrown liberally like party streamers around his gored corpse. He couldn’t believe this was where his day began.

There was no sound. The sounds of the party were gone; the music, the chatter vanished. And so did the voice. Valkyrie did*’t notice, he liked it better this way. He entered the ballroom. Everyone was gone, the tables were gone, and the room was empty. Except for the pale lady in the center of the dance floor.

Valkyrie recognized her, and then realized something. He touched his head, his fingers met by the feeling of soft hair. This was a dream. The images were images from the Sweaty Bullets. It all made sense, it was her fault. “It’s you… what’d you do to me?” he spat. He moved closer to her, but the image of her flashed in and out of view.

“You cannot live without death, so that will be the one thing I take from you. You’re a horrible person, Valkyrie. You’re horrible…” It was the voice, for a brief moment, it’d returned.

He stopped, and shouted, “Where are you?!” And then he felt the chill of her cold finger tips against his now bald scalp. She appeared behind him, like a ninja stalking her prey. Valkyrie was paralyzed by her touch, powerless. The Spirit was in control of the situation, and he hated that. “What’d you do to me?”

The Spirit did*’t answer. She pushed her hand into Valkyrie’s skull, and squeezed her hand into a fist. “You will never feel pain again,” she moaned demonically. She sounded possessed. In that moment, Valkyrie wondered why she wasn’t known as the Demon of the Forest. She then placed her other hand against his back and pushed until she was wrist deep in Valkyrie’s flesh. She found his heart and squeezed again. “You will live forever.”

“You will be immortal.”

A light embodied the entire ballroom, erasing it from Valkyrie’s mind, leaving him and her in an empty, white void. The Spirit removed it’s limbs from Valkyrie, and leaned into Valkyrie’s shoulder and whispered, “Trust me, you’ll come begging for death.”

The Spirit vanished into dust, and Valkyrie was left alone.

He was surrounded by the darkness of his bedroom. Valkyrie opened his eyes, greeted by the blackness and a thirst for blood. He smirked, and reached for the dagger under his pillow. Raising the dagger over his stomach, he closed his eyes, praying his dream was true. He thrust the dagger into his stomach. He lay there, motionless, in a pool of his own blood. He took a deep breath, and drifted into unconsciousness.

all of those people were waiting for a pretty people
~ I think you can see the problem

Maybe the way why he loved her?
~ Again =3

Valkyrie perfects, he almost
~ Semi Colon. Torpeh would be screaming "Comma Splicing" right now XD

a dream, he did*’t eve
~ Comma splicing: you're doing it.

He looked at himself in the mirror in his black shirt, suit, pants, shoes, and tie he did*’t look like a twenty five year old.
~ I think you have a run on sentence here.

She burst into a fit of girlish giggles
~ Christ commands you! BEGONE FOUL GIGGLES!

disgustingly cute.
~ D'awww, oxymoron! I love those!

Little *******…’ Apparently, the voice in Valkyrie’s head did*’t like the pompous ***** either
~ The censor... kill it.

of taunting, Dr. Stone
~ Comma splicing. Semi colon needed.

A **** formed across
~ I think I know what this is, but the censor still needs to be killed.

~~~~~~~~
Good chapter, Charmeh! I like the whole crazy Val! The back/front story of the character is just what I expected and it was done brilliantly!
Oh, in the last little proofread it did, the ones with the speech marks had little errors. Here's them fixed:
previously?!” she screamed
~ previously?!" She screamed
avenge you.” She turned to face the crowd. “And I
~ avenge you," she turned to face the crowd. "And I
buddy!” they
~ buddy!" They
Remember that if the same person is going to speak in that same paragraph, you should finish every speaking bit before the last time with a comma, showing that their speech continues. Man, that sentence made no sense... I'll try and clarify it better if you need it.
But once again, brilliant chapter and I wait for more =3
Madame Lament, I want you to know how much I appreciate you reading my story and proof reading it, 'cause grammar is so NOT my strong suit, as you can probably tell. Thank you for clearing up that litttle misunderstanding :) . I can see clearly now, the rain of confusion is GONE!
I want you to promise me something. I want you to promise me that if I make any stupid decisions, or if I start any stupid story arcs, I want you to tell me. I want this to be good.
They Call Me Valkyrie is just so easy to write. I have a good feeling about this.
Anyway, thank you!
