CHAPTER 2:

For hours, Jennifer Stone laid there alone in her own clearing in the Burning Blair Forest. The news of her death rippled throughout the forest. The trees stood with a solemn solitude unlike any other day. Their leaves swayed with sadness, and the bushes and other shrubbery rustled with unease and despair. Before the human world even knew Jennifer Stone was dead, she was missed.

Blood trickled from her twisted body, creating little veins that ran throughout the forest. It was then; the Spirit of the Forest was summoned. From deep underneath the earth, she felt the warmth of the blood of an innocent, and the chill of injustice. Her cold, lifeless soul was awakened, seething with rage and a thirst for vengeance.

In the still of the night, the trees breathed out the soul of the Spirit, casting a new light over the Burning Blair Forest. She stood amidst the forest’s trees, her soul taking the form of her former self. Her body was pale, and petit, and she was dressed in a black, lacey dress, her face covered in a veil. She knelt down in honor of the forest, and touched the earth.

“Blood was spilt on my domain; a young woman died just as I had. I will avenge her. Bring me to her,” she spoke to the earth. A speck of light shone under her finger tips, entering her soul, enveloping her body. Her pale, green eyes shimmered with knowledge, masking her fiery anger.

She stood up, and turned around. In an instant, she was there by Jennifer Stone’s side, her ankles wrapped in Jennifer’s blood. “You were beautiful,” she whispered, a voice carried like a pleasant breeze. She knelt down next to the corpse, and touched its smooth face, beautiful even in death.

A light embodied Jennifer Stone’s body, shooting out from her open wounds. The Spirit’s hand absorbed the light, whispering “Who killed you?” Her eyes clamed shut as she took in the light, smiling. She sighed a sigh filled with pleasure, “Valkyrie … that was the name of the man who killed you…

“But you weren’t the only one, were you?”

Lights swallowed the whole forest, intensifying in one moment and then disappearing the next. “The scent of death essence attracts me… sooths my senses… And this place, my one time home, reeks of it!” she exclaimed as she jumped to her feet, her body soaking up al the light like a sponge.

The souls of a hundred men and women appeared around the Spirit, her eyes wide with surprise and anger. “Has he done to you all what he has done to this girl?!” the Spirit asked, screaming on the top of her lungs.

“Yes,” they all answered. Their voices so intense they echoed throughout the forest.

“Why was I not summoned previously?!” she screamed. She scanned the crowd, and then realized something. They shared only two things in common, their kill and burial ground. They were all killed in ways varied, as were all of their locations. They were just buried in the forest.

The Spirit spun around and faced the cliff. She scaled its length with her eyes. It was then she realized this was fate. “This Valkyrie made a mistake in killing you here, Jennifer Stone… I will avenge you.” She turned to face the crowd. “And I will make him pay for defiling my home… treating it as a burial ground for his sins…

“He… will… pay…” she grimaced, her voice seething with anger.

She screamed at the top of her lungs, the stars above being the only ones to hear her. A rush of wind shook the clearing, dusting away the souls and the Spirit in one fell swoop. The wind carried the Spirit to Crater City, where justice could be fulfilled.

Valkyrie returned home to Crater City that night, content with what he’d done. It was a few minutes after twelve, and Crater City was bustling with life. Teens and their lovers rushed to the clubs, eager to melt their brains with drugs and dance the night away with complete strangers. Like a ghost, Valkyrie moved though the crowds unseen.

This crowd was Valkyrie’s favorite. Twenty-somethings too high to know which way was up. They were practically asking for him to kill them. Valkyrie, with his stainless steel blade, answered eagerly.

He scoped out the crowd. Everyone was intoxicated enough to easily trick into coming back to his place. He had no particular preference when it came to who he killed. Gender was nothing but a word, and age was nothing but a number. They were all human, and that was all Valkyrie asked for in his victims.

But something was different tonight, something felt off… Valkyrie did*’t feel the sense of power or control he usually felt while he hunted. Instead, he felt insecure, stalked, and vulnerable. He continued to scope out the crowd, ignoring this uncomfortable sensation.

Continuing through the crowd, he made his way to the sleaziest, seediest night club in Crater City, Sweaty Bullets. Its neon sign shot lights down on its patrons, fluorescent lights shot out from its entrances, and music pulsated from every opening, giving just a little taste of what it was like inside. Valkyrie stopped, recognizing his favorite hunting ground, and slithered through the crowd toward the entrance, not shy as to who he pushed out of his way.

Suddenly, just as he put one foot in the door, a chill ran across his neck and down his spine, stopping him in place. He looked around inside the club, and then over his shoulder, where his gaze was met by hundreds of angry eyes. “Hey, buddy!” they all shouted. “Move out of the way!” Valkyrie faced forward, and grinned widely. The crowd’s anger was amusing.
