He released Hope's wrist and said quietly, "I'm so sorry for hitting you. I was way out of line."
She frowned. "Relax. I'm a big girl and can take care of myself. If you thought I was shy and meek when we first met, you're assumption was dead wrong."
"Well," Alex took some slow breaths to calm himself down. "You were pretty hesitant about everything."
She rolled her eyes. "That was only because I hadn't done anything like that before."
"Like what?" Alex paused. "You were just sitting alone in the bar, and that man came in and gave you money..." His eyes went wide.
Hope slapped him a third time. "You really are a pig! You know very well that's not what the money was for!"
He rubbed his cheek where she'd slapped him. "Well, now I do, for sure." He stood. "Alright, let's go."
"Go where?"
"To find Rosie."
"You really think I'm going to help you find your girlfriend?" Hope laughed.
"I just kind of thought it the polite thing to do."
"Have you even looked outside?" She pointed to the window. The ugly green curtains were pulled shut. Of course he hadn't looked outside.
She continued. "It's at least midnight."
"What?" Alex's jaw dropped. "How long was I out?"
"A long time. An unprecedented and unbelievably long time. I had to make sure you were still alive by holding my hand mirror to your mouth quite frequently."
"How does that help?"
"You really are dumb. Cute, but dumb." She rolled her eyes. "If you were still alive and breathing, your breath would fog up the glass of the mirror."
"Oh," Alex paused, then said defiantly, "I'm going to look for Rosie, and I'm gong now. Whether or not you're coming with me."
Hope smirked. "Look, you tell me that three men ambushed you, and one just happened to find a hammer lying randomly on the ground with which he clobbered you over the head?"
Alex nodded.
