Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. :P

Sorry I never got this chapter posted. Personal issues are most likely to be blamed in this type of situation.

Chapter 11

Their walk home was pretty much silence. It bothered Alex a bit that Rhody was so happy. He smiled almost the whole time, even as he explianed that they'd, most likely, secured a client. That moping guard back at the bar was willing to pay for the elimination of his competition to ensure himself a promotion. All they had to do was run it by Elizabeth and they'd have themselves a hired murder.

It made Alex ill. It was murder. Their "clients" wanted murder. They weren't selling fuit; they were slitting throats and shooting arrows into the backs of people's heads.

Alex remembered back to Randalf McGhee. He hadn't done anything to provoke his death. He was just running. Randalf had no idea that his morning job would end in death. He didn't know Elizabeth or that she wanted to kill him. All that he knew was that it was a nice morning to go for a run, and it made Alex sick.

Just before they reached the house, Alex stopped Rhody. "Rhody!"

"Yeah?" The gardener stopped and turned to face him.

"What did Randalf McGhee do?" Alex asked. He wanted to know why Elizabeth killed him. If it was just senseless murder, he couldn't live with it.

Rhody groaned and slowly wiped his face with his palm. "Really, boy? Are you still babbling on and on about this topic?"

As Rhody turned to make his way foreward again, Alex grabbed his shoulder. "Wait, Rhody. Please, sir, I need to know exactly why Elizabeth killed him."

"Assassinated," Rhody corrected. "She assassinated him. It was murder with a purpose."

"What was the purpose?" Alex asked again. "Please, sir, I really need to know."

Rhody started. "Well, since you called me 'sir', I guess i can tell you." He glanced around a moment before continuing. "He stole a goat."

"She killed him because of that?" Alex was extremely disappointed and disgusted. It was the same excuse Elizabeth gave him before. He was sort of hoping that there was some moral reason behind it, but there wasn't.

"Look," Rhody snapped. "She was paid for it. Elizabeth turns down plenty of clients. She won't kill just anyone. That would be crazy."

"So she might turn down this client you just found?"

"Yup," Rhody nodded.

"But what about those coins? Didn't the guard already pay us?"

"This is a downpayment of five hundred coins, so yeah, he did kind of."

Alex asked, "What happens if Elizabeth turns down his offer?"

"We just got five hundred coins richer with no strings attached," Rhody said with a laugh.

"Won't that make us scammers?"

"Yeah, but what's he going to do about it?" Rhody said. "'Guards! Guards! I was just scammed by two men! I was really drunk, so I hardly remember, but I think they're from Ardougne. I gave them a down payment to kill someone - one of you, actually - and they never did it!'"

Crossing his arms, Alex admitted defeat and grumbled, "I still don't like it."

Rhody shrugged helplessly. "It's just something you learn to live with, Alex. But, you gotta' admit, this is way more fun than scrubbing dishes all day, 'eh?" His deep-throated laugh echoed through the halls as he opened the door to the mansion.

Caught in a moment of indecision, Alex just stood in the doorway. How could he live with it? Sure, the pay was grossly higher than it should have been, but how could Alex live with himself, knowing he was assisting someone as cold-blooded as Elizabeth or Rhody? Money could buy a lot of things, but it wasn't very helpful when it came to buying back lives or saving souls from eternal torment.

He just stood in the doorway, thinking. What if he just ran? They weren't really keeping him here any way at all. The only thing that glued Alex to this house was his mother, who slept soundly in a bed upstairs and was looking healthier for the first time in years. Sure, Rosette was important, but it was his mom who kept Alex living there day after day. She looked happier, and for the first time in recent memory, Alex would find her sitting up in bed to read or write poetry. She was happy; she really was.

Alex couldn't live with himself if he took that away from her, so solemnly, he stepped foreward into the house and shut the heavy door behind him.

Chapter 12

Apparently, Elizabeth wasn't exactly as cold-blooded as Alex had originally thought, for the next day, when Rhody projected the idea for the new client to her, she reacted in a way unprecedented by anything she'd done before.

"No," she said. She shook her head and went back to reading her book. Reading was something Alex would frequently find her doing, especially as she lounged about her balconey. A knot twisted in Alex's stomach as he thought about it, though. How could Elizabeth lounge about all day reading and not even be bothered to teach Rosette?

Rhody seemed a bit bothered by her response. "May I ask why not?"

This time, she nodded. "Yes."

"Ok," Rhody said. "Why not?"

"Guards make a decent wage. His promotion should be based solely on his work ethic and not on the sorry fact that all of the competition has ben eliminated," she paused to take a sip of her tea, then continued. "Frankly, I don't want a sergeant willing to stoke down to the level of murder to get what he wants. I need a better reason than greed."

Frowning, Rhody asked, "But waht about his growing family?"

She shrugged elegantly. "What about it?"

"Surely the fact his wife has a child on the way is enough reason to ensure his promotion..."

Elizabeth sighed softly and set her book in her lap. "Rhody," she started. "How long have you been working for Charles' family?"

"I saw him in diapers."

"And how much were you beign paid?" She took another sip of tea.

"I had to work my way up from just room and board," he said with a nod. "Why?"

"Tell me, how long were you and Violet married before she had Ivy?"

"I'd say 'bout five years."

She smiled. "Finally, can you tell me why you waited so long? I know Violet always wanted to be a mother. She told me so many, many times."

"We wanted to make sure we could afford it. Together we hardly made enough to support ourselves, and we wanted to live comfortably before we stretched our incomes further."

Content with his answer, Elizabeth smiled, nodded, and went back to reading her novel. In the silence, birds chirped and sang sweetly, leaves rustled slightly from a soft breeze, and the golden rays of the afternoon sun bounced off of Elizabeth's silky black hair and delicately soft skin. As Alex stood, leaning against the balconey railing next to Rhody, he couldn't help but think about Elizabeth and how she was possibly one of the most beautiful women he'd ever seen.

When Rhody noticed the staring, Alex quickly reminded himself of both teh age difference and the fact she was happily married. He replaced thoughts of his boss with those of Rosie and said the first thing that popped into his head in order to avoid an awkward silence.

He asked, "Where's Charles?"

"At work," Elizabeth answered.

"But," Alex said, "isn't it a Saturday?"

She shrugged helplessly before softly sighing, "The man takes no days off. I swear, if it weren't for Violet and my hobbies, I'd go crazy. He knows nothing but work, and I'm left alone because of it."

Alex frowned. "Is killing people one of your 'hobbies'?"

Unscathed by his callused tone, Elizabeth nodded. "Of course, why else would I do it?"

Alex could think of a hundred other more logical reasons than boredom.
