Hello, I'm Capt.

This will be another story of mine. However, unlike a lot of my writing, this is going to be a full-length one, and, hopefully, be finished. Lately, I've been having trouble getting through stories, so I focus mainly on the short ones. This time, though, I'm going to go for a solid story with some good length in it. I need you guys, though, to help me on with it!

~` Prologue `~

Shadows danced along the walls; the moon rose and then began to fall; it had come.

Whispers, eloquent and faithful in motion, spoke out, crafting their tales with calm desire and lack of malice; all this was but an illusion, a fallacy in a world of deceit.

“Farewell,
Thou fair day,
Thou green earth,
And ye skies…”

The song’s pitch rose as the moon’s light strengthened; its watchful eyes gazed down with forceful wanting; it knew of the world’s destiny, its ending.

Ear-shattering, now, the music of nature was. And then, as if the melody commanded, clouds rushed forth in the dismal sea of darkness high above, their mission all but complete as they blocked the moon’s gaze. They prevented it from seeing their work far below; and it was then complete.

Shrouded in the blackness created by fate, the shrieks of many throughout the world fled from their mortal bodies. As the clouds fell, the music died. The screams halted, the shadows relaxed, and the world, calmed now, fell back into its tainted illusion of serenity.

~` Chapter One `~

“I feel as though the time for compromise has passed, sire. It would be best for us all if we were to assemble the army to defeat this… rebellion.”

King Rezod sat idly in his chair, twisting a small chain around his arm. His throne room was a massive piece of art, designed by the greatest sculptors across the land; even his statues were adorned in robes and jewelry of prestigious wealth. A carpet lay out in front of him; it was red, and a golden lining ran down the edge of the cloth. Aside from that, a massive chandelier was hanging high above, its purpose to light the room with the candles that circled all around.

Rezod’s short, brown hair poked out slightly beneath his crown, darkening his eyes in its shadow. With this, his rough face, burdened by the scars of times long past, held a stout nose that was placed directly in the center, and a small mouth that seemed to be guarded by his goatee below. Then, as he listened to his advisor’s words, his face slowly twisted itself into a cruel smile.

“I believe,” he began, “that the time has indeed come.”

The king’s large, burly arms pushed against the stone chair he sat in, which was covered with a flagrant towel for comfort, and he rose. He towered over most of the men in the room, standing far above six feet in height, and he scratched his chin softly before proceeding up to one of his knights that stood on the side.

“You…. What is your name?”

The knight shifted uneasily as he replied, “Jacob, sir.”

Rezod smiled as he grasped Jacob’s helm with one of his hands and lifted it off, revealing the face of but a young man, around nineteen. The king laughed and studied his inferior: standard, iron armor, a solid shield of steel, and a short sword that was held neatly in his scabbard. Jacob shuffled again, but remained erect as his liege scrutinized his appearance.

“This is what you expect us to defeat them with? These… children? They would be slaughtered easily and without mercy; their deaths would be but a symbol of failure for our land. Is this… massacre… what you think is best for the kingdom?”

His advisor continued to look forward to the empty throne and he wiped his bald, shining head with his handkerchief. Shuffling, his glasses fell to the edge of his nose, but he pushed them up and then looked down at the parchment he held tightly in one hand.

“Sire,” he proclaimed, brushing his dark, silk shirt with one hand, “this had come today.” He then lifted his hand, and ushered the king back to his chair. Although Rezod declined, the advisor moved forward. “A letter came from the general of the resistance. Would you like me to read it?”

Rezod’s head was titled towards the ground and his crown slid to his brow’s end, but he motioned with his hand for his loyal subject to cease.

“Milord?”

“Let him speak words to no one, for they mean nothing to me. Our army will not be assembled, as this war shan’t take place. As we speak, the general is being killed; it is over.”

The advisor glanced at one of the knights and spoke again, “We have another problem at hand.”

The king sharply turned and strode over to his advisor, looking down at him, above his glasses. A wave of anxiety fell upon the smaller man as he continued, “Sire, a… different… type of threat has now come into play. Small forces have appeared all over, apparently searching for… something. A source of power of some kind. Rumor has it that not even the great army here in Revenske could defeat the one who holds such a force.”

Rezod frowned and asked, “Impossible….” He lifted Landon, his advisor, by the cuff of his collar and asked, “How did this happen? How have we not heard of this before?” Then, he dropped him, seemingly lost for words in his anger. He slumped over into his chair and muttered, “Quickly… find Brexton. He’s one of the few that could take on a task such as this.”

“Brexton?”

“He lives just north of here, across the Vesk River. Travel to him and bring him here.”

“Sire, that's a good two days' journey! Shouldn’t we send a party?”

Rezod glanced over at Jacob and ordered, “You. Jacob, correct? Go with Landon. You, obviously, have more training than him, even if it’s an insignificant amount. I urge you to make haste, for this… power... could come into play at any time. While you’re gone, I shall have Korinth Hidal, our scholar, research this newfound item. When you get back we should have more knowledge. Now, go.”

Landon sighed and whispered something to one of the knights that had been present before saying, “Come, Jacob. The road will be long, so I suggest we stock up on a few supplies from the courtyard before we make our way to the town of Veskile.”

Jacob nodded and quickly latched his shield onto his back. The weight was heavy, but his four years with the army commander had made him stronger than the normal civilian, and, with his weapon by his side, he was also a far more deadly force.

“Hurry now, Jacob,” Landon said, moving towards the massive doorway ahead of them. It had been built of the finest wood available, and etched into the fantastic frame were the symbols of gods of lore; they were there to protect the city from attackers and plague. Then, with but the touch of a finger, Landon pushed forth the doorway and sunlight shone down upon them.

Anthoni sat on his horse, his sword weighing heavily in his hand. Not long ago, an attack on his life had been attempted, but, thankfully, his insurgence force had been able to track down the imposter and deal with him posthaste; however, they had left the man alive, and now it was the leader’s turn to have his way with him.

The sunlight of the day was beating down on the small group, forcing them to relocate to find a better position to attack Revenske when the time came. They had attempted to send word to the king, but no response had been received. Anthoni took no mind of it and simply considered that it had not yet made it to him.

Looking back, Anthoni saw his men, clad in bronze armor, all packing away their things for the journey to better coverage. The field they moved from was full of lush grass and colored a deep green, but it was a false promise given to them by the heavens. During the late night, Anthoni had chosen a soft clearing in which to rest, but, as the noonday’s light had come, it became apparent that such a place would only serve to weaken his already limited assembly of men.

It had been a solid four weeks since they disregarded Rezod and his wishes, but it felt like an eternity. Many nights had been spent fighting off animals and scouring for food, because, as the entire country of Heldora knew, fighting the king was a death wish, but helping those who fought the king could prove to be just as bad. Anthoni's men had been worn down by the constant travel and, many of them reaching the age of thirty, they had low stamina to fight to begin with. Anthoni knew that, in order to defeat the king, he would have to have his men in top condition.

“Alright, men!” Anthoni shouted from his steed. “We shall move on a few miles west of here, to the town of Veskile! There, we shall find supplies that, if called for, we shall take with force. Do not worry, though: the king and his treacherous ways shall soon find themselves at an end! We are the rebellion! We must move on, for the good of Heldora! So, on to Veskile!”

This speech received a good response from the troops, who had long been lacking in morale due to their own weakness. Still, Anthoni had been one of the heroes of the age, and he was still able to gain a soft, viable response from his supporters.

“Sir,” a voice called from below.

Anthoni’s eyes fell upon a smaller soldier, who had removed his helm to cool his head. His black hair was matted by sweat, while his brow dripped beads of perspiration to the ground. He was clean-shaven, though, which symbolized he was one of the younger men. As he looked up upon Anthoni with his brown eyes, he felt a sense of respect and admiration befall him.

“Yes?”

The soldier awoke from his daydreaming and asked, “What do you wish for us to do with the prisoner?”

Anthoni moved his hand through his blonde hair, which fell to his shoulders, and replied, “Bring him to me, Maxwell.” The solider, Maxwell, nodded and walked away towards a tent that had yet to be taken down. Meanwhile, Anthoni watched him and smiled: the new generation was coming, and he was there to teach them. He then noticed he still held his sword, and quickly slipped it away into its sheathe. He chuckled to himself for such a thing and then raised his arm, which was covered in an iron armor, above his men, signaling for them to hurry. The response was almost immediate.

Anthoni's long hair had been soaked to the core with sweat, and he knew that it would be difficult for him to maneuver with the wet material slapping him in the face. To counter this, he grabbed a string and tied his hair into a single strand and then tossed it over his shoulder. His blue eyes gave a sign of content as he rubbed his small, light-colored amulet across his chest, muttering, “God high above, give me strength in this mission.”

Anthoni’s head then titled upwards and he saw Maxwell returning to him. His facial expression gave a serious approach, but Anthoni knew he was a light-hearted soul with no idea of what it felt like to truly hurt, or kill, his fellow man; he was innocent.

“He’s ready,” Maxwell said with a nod before pointing to the tent. There, two other soldiers, covered in the same armor as Maxwell, stepped out of the tent and tossed a man onto the ground.

Anthoni could tell that his soldiers had done quite the number on the intruder. Even from a distance of fifteen yards, the blood that dripped heavily from his face was apparent and his tattered clothes were obvious. Anthoni even thought he saw strips of cloth ripped from his back, as if a whipping had taken place.

The two men of Anthoni’s scowled as they dropped the man onto his face right before their leader. Anthoni ushered them away and then hopped off of his horse. The man was exhausted, it seemed: his body was unmoving, his legs were beaten down into a bloody mess, and his arms were limp, even when Anthoni tried to move them.

“Get up,” Anthoni commanded.

No response came.

Maxwell glanced at his comrade and shrugged before reaching for his blade.

“Stop.” Anthoni motioned for Maxwell to replace his weapon, and he did so without question. Anthoni then lifted the man’s head and asked, “Who are you? Why did you try to kill me?”
