Chapter 10
Ways of Magic
Mathew had had a long chat with Santhari. She had been extremely unhappy with him, believing that he had been ignoring her. She quickly had gotten over it though in a child like gift of forgiveness. The wizard had then recommended that he spend some time telling Santhari about him and to try to learn what had happened to her, so for the last half hour he had sat staring at the dragon speaking with her through their thoughts. He had told her about most of his life but she had been unwilling to divulge any more then her views about the long trip and having a coarse rope around her neck.
Mathew heard a knock at the door and the wizard looked up from a book and said,"Come on in Mark."
A small head peaked in through the crack and the wizard motioned for the small boy to sit. The boy stepped into the room and shyly took a seat next to Mathew. The boy had wild hair going all over the place and was obviously small. Santhari turned towards the boy and shot a small flame at his feet. The boy shrieked and jumped into the chair and Mathew thought,"Stop", right as another jet began to appear,"You can't go around scorching peoples feet." Santhari stared at Mathew for a second and then curled up on the chair to his right, but no message was sent back to him.
Chuckling the wizard announced,"Mathew this is Mark. Mark this is Mathew. I believe that Mark has the gift but I have yet to find out in what, because of this we can find out if you have the gift and if so where at the same time."
Mathew smiled at the boy trying to calm him down and the boy eventually sat back in the seat, keeping as far to the left in the chair as possible and not looking at Mathew or Santhari.
The wizard continued,"There are many ways of using magic in this world, those who have the gift can normally use about three, although two only truly count because the first is one that anyone can use."

"The first is through the use of runes. Runes are the powers of magic split into main elements and infused into special rocks. It is unknown how many types there are but we currently only know of four. These are the four main elements, which are, fire, water, wind and earth. Using special combinations of these and different amounts you can use a limited amount of magic. We used to have countless amounts of these runes but they have become limited and we do not know how they are created, so they are now worth their weight in gold."
"Before you even think of touching a rune you both will study what the known combinations of runes will do.""Read these", the wizard said while handing each of them a copy of the same book. "I do not know how to read", announced Mathew. Each of them were staring at him including Santhari. "Stop looking at me like that. You can't read either", Mathew thought. Instantly he heard in his mind,"True, I have no need for these silly things you call books. All my knowledge was passed to me by my mother."
Mathew was interrupted when the wizard said,"Then you will need to spend a couple hours a day with Mark and he will teach you to read. Now then, the next way to use magic is through the eyes. With this style people sees what we call threads of the four elements to use magic. The amount of energy in the thread, the combination of threads and the weaving of the threads will cause different things to happen. Obviously much more can be done with this method but it is more complicated, and uses one's own strength to cast spells." The wizard took a break, sticking a small piece of paper in the book he had been reading and setting it on a stack of books beside him. Mathew looked over to Mark. He was on the edge of his seat and seemed to be hanging onto every word of the wizard.

lol I imagined this in my head.
*Mark put his hands together and focused all of his energy on that particular area. Was it going to work, he didn't think so. After all he did have many failures at attempting to do this fire spell. Santhari however was amused watching the boy fail again and again. Mathew however was still having trouble starting off the spell. Santhari indicated the boy on how real fire shooting is and shot a random blast of heat out of the window. Mark tried one more time trying to focus all of his energy again.
After about 15 minutes Mathew was about to successfully cast the spell when suddenly, a tiny blast of fire hit his head and burnt his hair a little. Mark gasped at his success then spent the next 5 minutes apologizing to Mathew while Santhari laughed her lungs out on the floor literally rolling on the ground laughing*
hehe hope you guys liked it.

When finished with the book the wizard said,"The next way to harness magic is through the mouth. People with this gift use a special language to control the magic. This way gives you much more structure on your spells and most of the time is less complicated then the eye method once you understand the language."
"The last method is through the mind. This way is to simply use your will to influence the world around you. This way is usually more powerful then the others and use less energy to cast spells then the others. Most of the time you can do more with this method as long as your imagination allows you to. The problem with this method is it is harder to tell ones limits and it is much easier to destroy yourself with it."
Once the wizard was sure they had both understood he continued,"Mark you will get your training schedule from the head of training tomorrow. Mathew I would recommend that you follow the same schedule Mark. This would mean that you begin training as a Bentarin. I believe that you will need the knowledge we teach to protect both yourself and Santhari. Added to this I believe you should spend some time with Mark to learn to read and time with me and any other teachers that might be able to teach you about Santhari and dragons as species."
Mathew began to respond but the wizard spoke first,"Do not decide yet. Spend a day or two first to understand what this would mean. Now both if you should go, I have research to do."
They both left the room and Mark quickly disappeared down the hallway. Mathew went down the same hallway as Mark, with Santhari doing a kind of dance down the hallway in front of him.
