"Yeah? What do you want?" the thief asked, the same height as Pa*uet. His face was red-masked like all the other Phoenix men, and he seemed hunched over from the sack.
"Two things. Are there any Runes in there, and can you protect me while we round up the rest of the crew?" Pa*uet looked left and right to see if there was anyone coming down the corridors. Another Phoenix man snuck out of one the room, his sack having little spikes in it. The other Phoenix man, the one standing next to Paquet, whistled for him, and the other thief turned around.
"Get over here, Clyde!" the thief shouted. Clyde, who was a rather skinny thief, even skinnier than Pa*uet, ran up to the two. He was shorter than both of them, although he was still adept at thieving.
"You got any Runes with you? Pa*uet wants us to guard him while we round up the crew."
"Nah, Odis, I got books. Nothing but books. I dunno what's in 'em, though. I don't read!" Clyde's voice was shady and soft, which agitated Pa*uet because he hated those types of voices.
"Well, let me see one! Hurry!" Pa*uet whispered, and Clyde put down the sack and took out a thin, old, greenish-gray book and gave it to Paquet. He flipped through the pages, skimming its contents, and found that there was nothing but faded pictures and hard-to-read captions in it.
"Shoot! Ok, we don't have much time. If a Jipalar Guard comes near us, you two have to help me out. Err, Odis, what kind of staves are in that sack?" Pa*uet turned to Odis and he replied,
"I got all the elemental kinds except for Earth, and I even managed to get some Mud and Lava staffs in the process. Dunno if they're battlestaffs, though; you'd have to make that call."
"Excellent! The only disadvantage is that I can't fire any attacks because I have no missile Runes. I'll have to improvise and use non-combat magic in combat. Hand me a Lava Staff and an Air Staff."
