Sir Lamentar: This was brilliant! Some lines have errors which cause them to not make sense, but it completely fits the context anyway. It made me laugh more because it suited the way the gnomes are portrayed. It’s also a genre that I am deeply surprised that you had a shot at. The oxymoron is ingenious, carried through with an entry that successfully utilises the genre and you use dialogue very effectively. Your character length is also perfect. Really great effort, and I am so glad you did*’t conform yourself to a specific genre.

Archive: You know how I feel about this entry. Under the circumstances (for those who don’t know, five minutes of Wi-Fi on an iPod due to a camping trip) it is decent, but it’s just way too short to be considered a serious entry. I really like your oxymoron, as “the silence deafened him” is a line I use quite frequently, but it just doesn’t match up; nor is it particularly “RuneScapish”. I know you can do better, but it just doesn’t reflect that and I can only review what you’ve posted for this round.

Wintry Elf: This is another top-notch example of a simple oxymoron developed into a brilliant story. As always, your impact is incredible, and my mouth falls open every time I read one of your entries. Ironically, you use the same “silence deafened me” that I talked about in Archive’s review – I use it quite often. I’d really like to see you explore some more idea or genres if I could say anything. You’re completely brilliant at writing this type of prose, but I’d love to see what else you can do. Really fantastic work.

Xanthian93: The first few paragraphs of your story are written wonderfully, but I have a few issues with the dialogue. Whether it was a stylistic choice, or you were out of time, the lack of direction makes the story pretty monotonous for me, especially when looking at it like it as 2/3 of your entry. I was very happy with the way you set up your oxymoron and the story, but it fails to come to a specific point or conclusion. For a topic like the cosmos, the man getting up and walking away just annoyed me. It annoyed me even more when I was asking myself “Who is the man? Who is he talking to? Why did he say that? Why did he leave?” and I was given no hint as to the answers. Another really short entry that I am, to be honest, not entirely happy with. However, you do have a very original oxymoron that made me think quite a bit, which you begin to develop in a somewhat intriguing way (albeit not involving RuneScape). With the limits you placed on yourself, I have to say good work.

Now to decide who wins the duels and the team challenge. I’ll work through them systematically as always:

First, the matchup of Nyyrikki V and The Level. Neither of you submitted anything, so I will be breaking what I said I’d do in the original challenge outline. No points will be allocated to either team, and both of you shall face the voting round as possible candidates for elimination. Sorry, but I see no fairer way to do it, and you’re both basically at the same placing in the contest at this point.

The second duel, between Archive and Xanthian93. I have half a mind to send you both to elimination, again awarding no point to your teams, but there is a person who did a little more in developing their idea than the other. Neither of you relate your story to RuneScape, so you’re on the same page there. However, the person that I feel had a better oxymoron and developed it more comprehensively was Xanthian. Congratulations, Mitch, you have won the first point for Team Calamus.

It comes down to the battle between Wintry Elf and Sir Lamentar. This was a terribly difficult match up to decide, and I have reasons to give both of you the point. This situation is similar to the ones I came to in the other reviews, in that I want to keep you give both of you immunity. Realising that that wouldn’t work, I have made my decision. It came down to the way that you presented your original idea, and oxymoron, and who developed it better. I feel that Wintry had a much better impact, but since comedy is not really written for this same impact, I had to disregard this. Due to some other factors as well, Sir Lamentar wins this duel in another extremely close manner. Congratulations.

With another point to Team Calamus, they win 2-0 to Team Plectrum. This means that Xanthian93 and Sir Lamentar both have immunity in this critical round, The Level missing out due to reasons specified above. Further information on the voting is now availavle on Page Two.

I'm glad you mention that, Aeraie! *sways*

There is a check-in for all members of the Authors in a week. You must all post before the end of Monday, GMT, or I will make other arrangements for people to vote a winner. This will most likely involve another twist challenge.

As it stands, Dieidiot0 has not posted since Round One, so it is likely that such a challenge will proceed anyway.

EDIT: What are the opinions on a contest following this one in a couple of months? Maybe late September if it does happen. I now have my doubts as to whether I shall want to run another of these, but I want to see what you all think.

Congrats, everyone. Leb, as to your contest idea, I support it but TNG is also planning to run a contest. Mitch requested it wait until yours ended, so I would love to have another one of yours, but perhaps following TNG's?
