UPDATE:

(Skip to the bottom paragraph to see how all the middle stuff effects the story.)

So... I meant to add on Sunday... but, the add turned out longer than I had expected, and I didn't finish it until late Sunday. Then I saw what time it was, and realized I had work in 3 hours, so rather than proofread and post it, I went to bed, and got a little bit of sleep.

On Monday, I came into work tired, and, although I made it through the day, I passed out almost as soon as I got home WITHOUT SETTING MY ALARM. I actually realized that as I was drifting off to sleep, but thought "heck, it's about 6 or 7pm, and I don't have work until about 9am. I'll wake up way before then" WRONG.

So anyway, I woke up, and it was light out, which it normally is around 8-ish, but I was a little shaken, so I looked over to a clock in my room: 10:46 am... Okay, that's bad, so I pick up my phone, which doubles as an alarm clock... and as I'm about to call in, I realize, I never adjusted the clock in my room since I don't really use it much... it's really 11:46. Now terrified, I call my boss to let him know what happened... he takes it pretty well. (I'm not in trouble :D ) but I do have to make up the work I missed by coming in early the next couple days.

Problem is, I slept 'til almost noon, so guess who can't get to sleep on Tuesday night, and thus is tired on Wednesday? Yep.

Oh and it gets better, one of my friends has her laptop break AND her friend's dog gets really sick, and another friend has her tablet pen break while she's working on a picture I commissioned from her... and one of my little sisters runs away from my parent's home and begins hanging out with an addict and a person with a "unique" criminal history (Those two ran off when the police were called)

So yeah... this week hasn't been a very good one for me (Oh, did I mention that about 30% of things I buy/use come from Japan? -.-; )

So anyway, I decided to delay the add and post it on Sunday as if it was this week's add

Smoke rose into the air like a dark pillar as yet another Deva village was burned to the ground. Every last man had been killed, most of them by the first wave of the warlock lord's magic, before they even knew they were under attack. The rest had quickly gathered together for a valiant but ultimately ineffective last stand, and had been quickly overwhelmed by the Zarosian forces. This final defense had allowed some of the women and children to escape into the jungles, in hopes of reaching other towns, but most had not escaped, and even now their screams filled the air.

The women and children of Deva society have never been expected to fight, and as such, few are taught the art of the sword. Oh, there were a few, such as Lady Harrier, who defied this expectation, and proved themselves to be formidable opponents, but most women would quickly surrender and ask for clemency. This action worked in normal situations as the neither the Deva nor the Asura believed in harming non-combatants, but against a warlock lord, all this accomplished, as Thomas put it, was “providing free entertainment at the cost of their lives.”

Thus after each conquest the men were allowed to spend their time “entertaining” themselves until the following “day”, when they would set out for the next city. The women were ravished brutally and frequently, and the children were subjected to all sorts of “games” the more sadistic Zarosians had thought up, which normally either involved competitions between these Zarosians to see who could make their “piece” scream the loudest, or who could break the most bones without their “piece” falling unconscious.

After the “celebration” was done, all but one of the captured Deva was put to death. That one surviving Deva, almost always a child, was left behind scarred and dismembered, but safely alive, so that he or she could, between sobs and moans, relate everything that had happened when the pursuing Deva army arrived.

Thomas took a perverse pleasure in all of this. Among the many things he hated, Deva were high on the list. Arrogant and self-righteous, they saw everything through a rose colored lens, conveniently not noticing suffering even as it occurred right under their noses. They taught their children that the world was a good place; a delusion that Thomas had once held, and was all to happy to shatter.

Two of the Zarosians engaged in these “celebrations” were the first to notice when the travelers arrived. Looking them, the Zarosians couldn't believe their luck; one of them was a young man, who despite his apparent youth, had gray hair. Oddly, his eyes, which were also gray, and seemed to lack pupils, but other than that there didn't seem to be anything unusual about him.

But it wasn't seeing the young man that made the Zarosians drop the Deva girl who now had one wing torn off and whose remaining wing was broken; it was seeing the person the young man was apparently escorting. Although she was cloaked, her figure was pronounced enough that the Zarosians had no questions about her gender, and from under her hood they could just barely catch a glimpse of shimmering silver hair and soft, wine red eyes.

Immediately, the Zarosians desired this woman, and resolved to take her by force.

“This was unexpected,” the young man commented apathetically. Ignoring the Zarosians, he took out a silver pocket watch and flipped it open. “This will delay us, your ladyship,” he added, “But I suppose we can't just let this sort of behavior go unpunished.”

“You are correct, Tyr,” agreed the lady, “We must help the people here.”

“I figured we would,” sighed the young man, “Let's see, thirty-seven hours, twelve minutes, twenty seconds until we have to get there,,, I suppose that if we only stop for two meals and once to sleep, we can comfortably make it to our destination in thirty-five hours, four minutes, and about ten seconds; so we have a whole two hours, seven minutes, and fifty-six seconds to get rid of these marauders. That shouldn't be too hard.”

The Zarosians stared at the young man in mild amusement before one of them demanded “Who do you think-” Before he could finish, one knife was hilt-deep in his forehead, and another, identical knife had embedded itself into his companion's forehead.

“Sorry,” Tyr commented in his usual apathetic voice, “Talking with you would have lowered my efficiency. Now... one hundred seventy-three more to go.” As he said this, four knives appeared in each of Tyr's hands, one between each of his fingers. With a fluid motion, he flicked both of his wrists, releasing knives at different times so they sped off in completely different directions. Most ricocheted off buildings, some more than twice, but every one of them hit their mark. In a matter of a minute, eight Zarosians had died, most without seeing the knife that had done them in by plunging into either their forehead or the base of their skull.

Those near to the killed quickly ran out to the streets, some half dressed, but with their weapons in hand. Eight more died while trying to get into the main street, but about twenty actually made it within sight of Tyr and the lady.

Seeing the group in front of him, Tyr clicked his tongue and sighed. “Too many to do this in an efficient manner, I'll have to actually use more than one knife per kill.”

“You think you can take all of us?” demanded one of the Zarosians.

Tyr blatantly ignored the question, instead taking a number of knives and throwing them around himself in a perfect circle. To the surprise of the Zarosians, the knives stopped and remained suspended in mid air.

“Is this some sort of magic?” questioned one of the Zarosians.

“Magic?” asked Tyr, “No. We Iudiser, or, as some people call us, Norizoku, can produce strong electromagnetic waves with our bodies. The magnetism I can produce is particularly strong and thus I can easily control a metallic object of low mass, such as my knives, even in mid-air.”

Before he had even finished speaking, Tyr sent the knives rocketing toward the Zarosians, although each knife was far less accurate than when he had been throwing them in groups of eight, the sheer number of knives compensated for his lack in accuracy. As a result, most of the Zarosians were killed in the first attack. Those few who did survive were injured and quickly fell to Tyr's subsequent, and more accurate attack.

“Well, that's it for those troops,” Tyr muttered, “Guess I should go hunt down the rest now.*

*Tyr,” commented the lady, “It appears we have company.”

Tyr paused at this comment, and blinked. Turning toward an alleyway he noticed a young man garbed in black, approaching.

“I'm impressed,* said the young man, “You're no amateur at fighting if you can take out all of those troops in such a short period of time.”

Tyr ignored the young man, and turning to the lady asked, “Isn't that Thomas, the warlock of despair?”

“I believe so,” replied the lady.

“This really will lower my efficiency,” mumbled Tyr, “It might even take me too long to get rid of him, and cause us to miss the deadline.”

“Tyr, leave the warlock lord to me,” said the lady, “Just deal with his followers.”

“Are you sure?” asked Tyr, “You know that these Deva will never be grateful to you, and your intervention could cause all sorts of nasty rumors.”

“Of course I'm aware of that,” replied the lady, “But I would think you know me well enough to realize I don't care about what sort of rumors are going around.”

“As you wish then,” commented Tyr.

“You really think I would let him get away?” questioned Thomas.

Tyr characteristically ignored the warlock and made a dash down the road. Severely irritated by this, Thomas held out his hand and began muttering the words of a spell. Before he was even near finishing, flames, a mix of black and silver in color, appeared inches from his face. Reacting instinctively, he pulled away, just before the flames expanded to envelop where he had been standing.

“It'll take more than that to do me in!” shouted Thomas.

“I wasn't trying to do you in with that one attack,” replied the lady, “I was hoping to talk you out of what you're doing rather than fighting. After all, I do know a lot about you; about the strange boy who was constantly teased and bullied by everyone just for being different; and about the person who first showed you kindness.*

*Shut up!” Thomas demanded, sending waves of flame at the lady.

The lady sighed and held out her hand, causing the flames to dissipate. “You learned magic to impress your friend, and to be of use to him, didn't you?” asked the lady, “You were once considered one of the greatest of the dark mages, able to create wonderful things with just a word. In terms of skill only the head of the dark mages' order surpassed you.”

“Fine, you did your homework,” snapped Thomas, “Then you know what good my magic did me! I was rejected; my so-called friend thought me weird for focusing so much on magic. You have no idea what my life has been like; I've lived in perfect hell, and if I don't have a right to happiness why should anyone else? People like you, who have lived perfectly happy lives, disgust me!”

“Me?” asked the lady. “My life isn't really what anyone would call happy. At the age of seven, I was kidnapped from my home by Deva slave-traders and brought here; to a land with an essentially opposite environment of my own. I was sold to a particular Deva lordling, a sadist with a taste for young girls. On the first night after being bought, I was taught “what it means to be a woman” in his terms. Nearly every night for the next six years I was left bleeding and at the point of death. And every night, my hatred for the Deva grew...

On the sixth year after I had been bought, I was rescued; spirited out in the day by some Asura who had snuck into the palace. It took me weeks to recover, but once I had done so, I immediately set out to become stronger, so I could take my revenge. Every day, I pushed myself to the limits, thinking only about repaying the wrong that had been done for me; I advanced quickly, becoming renown in power and ability. Soon, I had followers, and from those I fashioned a great army.

Then came the fateful day when I went to the Dark Mother, seeking her permission and blessing to raid Muspellheim, and unleash my vengeance. She didn't try to stop me, as she could have, nor did she forbid me from attacking, but after giving me her permission she asked a single question which caused my resolve to waver... she asked what I would do with the Deva children who were made orphans by my attack.

I was shocked, by that simple question, the Dark Mother caused me to realize that my revenge would not only affect the one who deserved it, but those who were innocent of wrong-doing... I would destroy others' innocence and in doing so would become more like the one I hated.

That was enough to make me call off my attack, but it was not enough to get my mind off of revenge. So rather than invade, I snuck into my former master's palace, intending to assassinate him. It wasn't difficult, he had grown complacent off his luxurious life-style, and didn't see the need to waste time and money training and equipping his guards. Within minutes, I had incapacitated all of his soldiers, and stood in front of him.

He sniveled, sobbed and begged for me not to kill him, and begged forgiveness... not that he was truly sorry of course, he was simply afraid of death, enough so to say anything.”

“So you killed him in an excruciating way?” interrupted Thomas, “Well, I can at least say I approve of that.”

“No,* replied the lady, “He is still alive... seeing him in such a state made me realize that killing or torturing him wouldn't satisfy me at all... that by allowing vengeance to consume my life, I had let that disgusting man have more power over me. So, I forgave him like he asked, but I did not let him simply waltz back into his rich life-style. He lives, and is in no extreme discomfort, but he is in a place where he can't harm anyone but himself. My hope is one day he'll truly repent, but I don't think that will be for a long time, even if it does happen.”

“So, what you're telling me is, that you're weak?” asked Thomas.

“You still don't understand,” sighed the lady. “Everyone suffers, but when one encounters suffering they can choose what to do with it.

You have been so busy focusing inward that you can't see this Thomas, that you fail to see or care about the suffering around you. Whereas, if you were to focus on others, and alleviate their suffering with your powers, you would find your own suffering vanish like smoke in the wind.” Saying this, the lady walked over to the young Deva girl that had been dropped by the Zarosians she and Tyr had first encountered. The lady gently picked up the girl's detached wing, and fitted it into the socket that had been left behind when it was torn out. Immediately, the girl's flesh began to regrow, and the wing reconnected to the girl's back. With her other hand, the lady brushed the girl's broken wing, and it straightened, until it was just as it had been before; whole and unbroken. Likewise, the girl's bruises and cuts vanished without a trace.

The young girl looked up at the lady with awe and admiration, and the lady on her part, smiled and patted the girl on the head.

“That's impossible!” shouted Thomas, “How can you have the power to do that? This has to be a trick... even the most powerful healing magic works by making the cells regrow at an increased rate, consuming more energy... As a result, that girl should've passed out or died when you healed her of all those injuries... but she seems actually more energetic than before you healed her!”

“This magic,” said the lady, standing up, “Has been known by many names, Thaumatrugy, miracle-working, divine magic... it is a magic of true healing which makes it as if some evil never happened. Unlike your warlockry which exists to increase suffering, this magic exists to relieve it, and to make the world become closer to perfect... This magic shall undo most of the evil you brought upon this village... You attacked within the last two hours, didn't you? So there's still time...”
