Sorry about missing that add last week. I meant to mention that I was going to take my birthday off, but I forgot ^^;

“Well, this was unexpected,” muttered Jen.
Although he didn't voice his opinion, Jayson was inclined to agree. They had gone from being prisoner one moment, to being seated at a table laden with food fit for a king the next. As Jayson was pondering what could have prompted this sudden change of attitude, a Zarosian hurriedly entered the tent and pronounced that Amatsu, head general of the Zarosian forces in Muspellheim had arrived.
Half expecting a hardened, bloody warlord, Jayson was surprised to see that the person entering the tent was a young man with long, blond hair, dressed in dazzling white robes.
Jayson started to rise in a sign of politeness, but was motioned to stop by Amatsu.
“Please,” said the general, smiling disarmingly, “Remain seated. I would not have you lower yourself by paying a lowly general such an honor, chosen of Guthix.”
Jayson remained seating, caught off guard by this request. Taking advantage of the Guthixian's silence, Amatsu sat down at his own seat and began to place samples of the various dishes on his plate.
“Please,” he said to the Guthixians, noting that they had not begun eating, “Help yourselves, you must be hungry.”
Jayson hated to admit it, but it was true he and the other Guthixians were exceedingly hungry. For the past several days, they had managed to live off what they foraged from the jungle, but roots and berries, though providing sustenance, did not seem to satisfy hunger.
As the Guthixians began helping themselves to the food, Amatsu spoke again. “Please,” he said, “Allow me to apologize for the rough treatment you received earlier. We have been ordered to make all haste toward our goal and to not let wind of our movements reach our enemies. But of course, this does not excuse such actions as taking our Gielinorian allies captive.”
“Allies?” asked Jen, “I'm not sure that I consider you Zarosians allies... what is this target of your's anyway?” "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand. Jayson turned to gauge Amatsu's reaction to this question, however, he nearly gasped allowed when he made eye contact with the Zarosian general. Amatsu's irises were colorless; that was not to say they were dark; they captured and reflected light like clear crystals, but they possessed no color of there own. Even as well traveled as he was, Jayson had never seen such eyes.
Jayson was so engrossed with the Zarosian's eyes, he almost didn't notice that Amatsu had begun to speak.
“Our target is the capital of Stork territory,” Amatsu told them, his voice tinged with regret, “We are to quell an uprising there... but the methods we have been told to use are rather harsh... I find it hard to go through with this without regret.”
“Then are you still planning to follow these orders?” questioned Jen.
“Of course,” replied Amatsu, sounding unsure, though he seemed to be trying to hide it, “These orders come from Lord Owl, one of the Deva Lords. They might seem harsh to us, but who are we to question the ways of other civilizations? Doesn't Guthix teach this as well? That we shouldn't judge the cultures of others, and that we should be open-minded?”
As he asked these questions, Amatsu looked straight at Jayson, making the Guthixian feel as if they were directed at him. As he thought of a response, Jayson's eyes met Amatsu's once more, and the Guthixian felt almost as if he was being trapped in those crystal-like eyes. For one terrifying moment, Jayson felt as if he was even now being made prisoner in an invisible cell. Then Amatsu closed his eyes and smiled, and as if a spell had been broken, Jayson felt himself released.
Looking at Amatsu's warm smile, while remembering the feeling he had while looking into Amatsu's eyes, Jayson began to understand the two emotions he had seen among the Zarosians in this camp when Amatsu was mentioned. Many had utmost respect and admiration for their general, but others, though they wouldn't admit it openly, clearly feared him. At this moment Jayson felt both fear and respect for Amatsu well up inside of himself, and had the odd feeling that he would have to choose between one or the other eventually. Also, though he couldn't explain it, he had the distinct feeling he had met Amatsu somewhere before...
As he stared at the Zarosian general, trying to remember where they might have met, Jayson's eyes fell on a single ring Amatsu was wearing on his left ring finger. The ring itself was made of gold and a single large gem which at first glance seemed to be a diamond. However, some of the carvings on the ring and gem struck Jayson as odd, and as he stared at them, they seemed to grow from odd to completely impossible. Still, Jayson found himself unable to tear away, even as he received a splitting headache from looking at the ring.
Finally, unable to come to terms with the impossibilities it was observing, Jayson's conscious mind essentially shut down, causing the Guthixian to pass out and fall from his chair.
He awoke moments later, to find Herba, Jen and Amatsu crowded around him with looks of concern on their faces.
“He's coming to,” observed Amatsu, “We should give him some space.”
Herba and Jen backed away. When Jayson was able to sit up, Jen quickly asked, “What happened?”
“I'm not quite sure,” gasped Jayson.
“Ah, could it be?” asked Amatsu, “Jayson were you looking at my ring, by chance?”
“Huh? Your ring?” asked Herba, “Why would that matter?”
“Herba, when you look at my ring, what do you see?* asked Amatsu.
“I see a beautifully carved golden ring with a diamond in it,” replied Herba. "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand. His Office is to teach all Arts and Sciences unto any; and to declare the Secret Counsel of any one."

“I thought as much,” said Amatsu, “However, this ring has a powerful enchantment. It's actually a bit more powerful than an amulet of fury. I had heard that the enchantment actually causes distortions around the ring in the fourth dimension. To a normal person, like you or me, this isn't a big deal, we can't see the fourth dimension anyway. But to a chosen like Jayson... well, it's said their perception is much higher than a normal human's, so it's possible he noticed those fourth-dimensional distortions and it caused him a sensory overload.”
“That fits what I saw,” muttered Jayson, rubbing his head.
“I apologize,” said Amatsu, “It never occured to me that you would notice those distortions... I should've taken your status as a chosen into consideration.”
“No problem,” muttered Jayson.
“How common are rings like that?” asked Jen.
Both Amatsu and Jayson stared in surprise at this unexpected question.
“Oh... fairly rare,” said Amatsu, “Why do you ask?”
“Well...” Jen muttered.
“Yes?” asked Jayson.
“I get a strange feeling about your ring,” said Jen, “And... although it looked different, Chris had a ring that gave me the same sort of feeling.”
An unmistakenable look of eagerness crossed Amatsu's face for a split second, and was quickly replaced by his cheerful smile. “A ring like mine?” he repeated, “This ring is but one of a set, I used to have all five, but due to a series of events, I lost the other four... Let me guess, the ring Chris had was like mine but with a different gemstone, right? I really would like to get all my rings back, so I would be happy to buy back the one he found for a handsome price.”
“Well, actually...” said Jen, “The gemstone was different... a ruby, I think... but the ring was different in another way too. The metal it was made of was bluish in color. I thought it was runite at first, but a lady named Calin told us it was a different type of metal.” "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand. “A ring made with blue metal?” sighed Amatsu. “Oh well, that's not one of mine. Too bad.”
“Ah, sorry,” said Jen.
“Well, it's not like it's your fault or anything,” said Amatsu, “But... if you would excuse me, all this excitement has made me tired, so I think I will rest... you're free to stay or set out as you please. My men have been chastised and know that you are allies, not prisoners.”

Once the Guthixians had bid him farewell, Amatsu returned to his tent and threw himself onto his couch.
“Ah, well, that was a surprise,” he commented to himself, “I really should've been more careful around the chosen of Guthix.”
“So I assume he noticed your Devil Ring?” asked Dantelion as he materialized in the tent, “You realize that even if Jayson does not know about the Devil Rings, there are powerful Guthixian mages who might. Those rings have been coveted since their creation, especially amongst magic users.”
“Rings which grant great power, but seek to control and subvert weak wills,” Amatsu sighed, “I would've been worried if that Chris kid had one, his race isn't known for their willpower.”
“Why would he have one of those rings?” asked Dantelion.
“Oh, Jen thought he did,” replied Amatsu.
“And why would she think that?” questioned Dantelion.
“Because he has a Sorrow Ring,” answered Amatsu.
Dantelion nearly fell over in surprise. “Please tell me that is one of your off-color jokes!” he exclaimed, “Though their power is of a different type, the Sorrow Rings are equally as powerful as the Devil Rings, if he were to use it-”
“And how would he do that?” interrupted Amatsu, “Unlike the Devil Rings, the Sorrow Rings do not try to control their bearers. Instead they simply will not work for someone with too weak a will. And besides... Thomas reported that Kutheostra rescued Chris, right? That means that when we take Harrier castle, we will take him.

“Did Jen mention which Sorrow Ring it was?” asked Dantelion.
“She did, and that makes it even more interesting,” replied Amatsu, “Do you remember that project I helped the Etyon with all those years ago?”
“Then it's HIS ring?!” exclaimed Dantelion.
“Actually, knowing about this makes sense,” said Amatsu, “You remember what happened when Mephos used the power of the Devil Ring he had with that 'certain other ring' Lingbao gave him?”
“Of course,” replied Dantelion, “Isn't that how Mephos “died*? Too bad we couldn't find his Devil Ring after that incident...”
“Yes,” replied Amatsu, “Knowing about it also let me figure out what Lingbao's ring did... what do you think would happen if someone used Lingbao's ring with the Sorrow Ring that Chris has right now?*
Scratching his head, Dantelion said,“Judging by what we know of Mephos death...” He trailed off as a look of surprise crossed his face.
“Yep,” replied Amatsu, “If that 's right then it would have interesting implications; not only about the rings, but about that Chris too... I had thought that there was something familiar about him...”
“So, what do we do now?* ventured Dantelion.
“We proceed as planned,” answered Amatsu, *The sooner we take Stork, the sooner we can get to Harrier, where the real prize lies.” "He appears in the Form of a Man with many Countenances; and he hath a Book in his right hand.
