The warrior looked at her bodyguard in surprise, few would dare question her authority. Even this bodyguard, a knight known for her courage in battle, could not finish her objection, and was now looking away, slightly pale.

“Continue,” said the warrior.

“Two aren't dead,” the bodyguard replied, her voice little more than a whisper.

“Two?” asked the warrior.

“One seems to have been a prisoner,” said the bodyguard, “He's bound hand and foot... not that it would do much good... he's a Fanzoku, and seems to have been ignored by the warlock... perhaps the warlock was sent to rescue him?”

The warrior looked off into the distance and shook her head, “Not that one. He wouldn't rescue his own child. What of the other survivor?”

“The knight, my lady,” replied the bodyguard.

“The one that was submerged in acid?!” exclaimed the warrior.

The bodyguard flinched. Few things could surprise the warrior.

“He's badly injured,” the bodyguard ventured, “But his life is his own. He seems to be the favored of some god... but whoever that god is, its power is weak here.”

“Send for Leofric,” the warrior ordered.

“My lady, he has already arrived,” said the bodyguard, “And is with the knight.”

“How like him,” said the warrior, smiling, “Couldn't miss a chance for new knowledge.”

Walking with a measured stride, the warrior made her way to where the knight lay. By his side was Leofric; unlike the warrior's mages, who were also standing nearby, Leofric did not wear red robes, rather, his robes were a deep violet. He did however, wear the same type of black cloak that the warrior's own mages did.

Noticing the warrior's presence, Leofric stood and bowed deeply. Looking him over, the warrior wondered if it was really wise for Leofric to come out to the jungle. His fair skin already had a slight pink tinge, the beginnings of sunburn, and his deep blue hair was soaked with sweat and clinging to his head. It seemed the knights had noticed this as well; more than a few of them were looking at the young mage with concern. The warrior understood this concern; few of them liked the idea of exposing a male to the harsh climate of Muspellheim. However, the warrior noticed that despite the effects that Muspellheim's climate had on Leofric, his small, bat-like wings had not drooped in the least. This made the warrior smile inwardly. Let her knights say what they would, but the males from “his” armies, though mild-mannered and polite, were not the frail weaklings that many thought they were.

As she mused upon this, the warrior realized that the mage was waiting for permission to speak. Again, she inwardly smiled. Protocol would have allowed the mage to talk after the bow, after all, he was a high-ranking member of another lord's army. But just like “him” Leofric was taking politeness to the extreme.

“Well then,” she said, “Where is this unfortunate knight from?”

“A land called Gielinor, Lady Kutheostra,” replied the mage. “He is favored by Zamorak, a usurper god aligned with Khaos.”

“And what do you suppose he is doing here?” the warrior asked.

At this, Leofric turned ashen, and he replied softly, “I... my profound apologies, your ladyship, I cannot reveal it.”

Several of the knights gasped at this. It was unthinkable for a male to refuse a request made by Kutheostra. In fact, she herself was taken aback, but for a different reason; Mazoku are sneered at by the Tenzoku for being “dishonorable” and while it is true that Mazoku will never fight fair if they can help it, there is one way in which they outperform the Tenzoku, and most races; and that is loyalty. An oath taken by a Mazoku is never broken, nor is a contract (provided of course, the other party keeps their end of the deal.)

Kutheostra knew, the instant Leofric refused to divulge the information she sought, that he had been ordered to secrecy by a person he had sworn loyalty to. And she also knew that, there were but two people to whom Leofric had sworn such; the first, of course, being the Dark Mother herself, and the second being his liege. For either one to order him not to reveal such a thing... even to Kutheostra was quite a surprise; and she quickly decided she better know who had ordered this secrecy...

“Could you at least reveal to me who ordered that?” asked Kutheostra.

“That, I may do, your ladyship,* said Leofric, “It was his lordship.”

Kutheostra stared into space, perplexed. “His lordship” was behind this... This was certainly a first. Kutheostra and him, while opposites in their mannerisms and methods, were nonetheless close allies. It was not uncommon to see his violet robed mages in her ranks, nor her red armored knights in his. So similar where their goals, and so interchangeable their troops that rumors frequently spread through Niflheim that the two of them were to be engaged at some time or another; a rumor that endlessly amused Kutheostra, as neither of them had the least bit of romantic interest in the other.

Ending her musing Kutheostra said, “Well, if Mephos wishes to keep such secrets, I will not press you Leofric.” Turning to her knights she said, “Gather up the two survivors, we return to the city.”

The knights, disciplined as ever, were quick to obey.

Sorry about that being late... I wrote it yesterday night and got tired, so I didn't proofread or post it. But at least it's long, right?

About the TIPS on Orcris; I'll have them up probably tomorrow. Busy right now.

oh no! I caught up with the adds, how will I keep myself entertained now?! "There is no Good or Evil, no Light or Dark, Order or Chaos. Just knowledge and your own ability to know when to stop. And if you knew when to stop, you'd never achieve the impossible."

Mephos! Now that's a good plot twist! Everything seems to be centred around Mephos Niddhog... Funny word, Niddhog... Reminds me of a funny little creature (whopping great dragon)that nibbles on tree roots (the World Tree). Funny that.

perhaps I'll go read the monolith now...or after Christmas. "There is no Good or Evil, no Light or Dark, Order or Chaos. Just knowledge and your own ability to know when to stop. And if you knew when to stop, you'd never achieve the impossible."

Ayumu paced through the small room impatiently. Every so often turning to look at Liam. To the surprise of both Setkul and Ayumu, Liam had been asleep since they arrived in Muspellheim, two days ago. Setkul pretended not to care of course, but Ayumu noted the concern in his eyes. Eventually, he had left the inn with the excuse of “scouting for information,” but Ayumu was all but certain that in reality the warrior just needed to clear his mind. He noticed too, that when he thought Ayumu wasn't looking, a look of concern crossed Setkul's face; Ayumu quickly figured out that Setkul was wondering whether this was a side-effect of taking Liam through the Void.

“That's it,” muttered Ayumu, “I'm tired of waiting. I'll find out for myself.”

Walking in front of the sleeping incubus, Ayumu outstretched his hand, but was startled as a calm voice said, “There's no need to do that.”

Turning around, Ayumu found that Gaudete had entered the room, and was looking at Ayumu with an amused expression on his face.

“What do you mean, no need?” asked Ayumu, “He's been asleep for days!”

“In Muspellheim, the land of light,” Gaudete responded softly, “I can't believe Setkul and you didn't notice though.”

“Notice what?” asked Ayumu.

“It doesn't matter any more,” answered Gaudete, his eyes falling on Liam.

Ayumu turned back to the sleeping incubus, and noted with shock, that he was convulsing.

“What's going on?” asked Ayumu.

“You already know the answer,” replied Gaudete, “You've seen this before.”

“Oh...” commented Ayumu, “Of course. Why didn't Setkul think of that? He would've jumped at the opportunity.”

Ayumu was about to say more, but noticed Liam's eyes had opened.

“Liam! You alright?” asked Ayumu.

“My head hurts,” replied the incubus, “But other than that, I'm fine. Where are we?”

Ayumu looked away and fell silent, leaving Gaudete to say, “Muspellheim.”

A crooked smile appeared on Liam's face, and he said, “Muspellheim, huh?” Standing up, he turned to one of the windows and walked toward it. He nearly lost his balance once; a side-effect of him being asleep for so long, but was quick to right himself and look through the window and out onto the land below.

“Muspellheim,” repeated Liam, “A land that believes itself to be the most perfect of them all. The people here-in see themselves as good, and any who oppose them as evil. There are as close-minded as Folkvangr.”

Ayumu gasped, and exclaimed “You're memories!”

“There were two memory fragments in the Void,” said Liam, “I have many of my memories back, but there are still large gaps. I do, however, remember being here, and I know where one of my memory fragments will be found.”

“Excellent!” exclaimed Ayumu, “Once Setkul gets back we'll head right there and...” he trailed off as he noticed Gaudete and Liam exchanging looks.

“You can't be serious,” said Ayumu, “The only way we got you in here unharmed is by Setkul convincing the civilians that you were his 'property'. You can't really intend to walk around by yourself. You'll be killed!”

“Oh, I somewhat doubt that,” replied Liam, “With the return of my memories, my power has also begun to return. That is why I was in that state for the last few days; my body was recovering it's lost power. I am not anywhere near my full strength, but something like this is easy for me.” Liam held out his arm and a staff materialized in his hand. The staff was made of gnarled wood, and was nondescript save for a single glass orb at its top, in which was a single shut eye. Liam held the staff aloft and spoke a single word; “Swebban.” At this word, the eye within the orb flared to life, and the orb itself began to glow a deep violet.
