In my opinion, gruesome-ness cannot remove degrade the quality of a piece of work. Without those details, the story would be incomplete. For example, I can't just say something along the lines of 'he stabbed the man.' That could mean anything. You have no idea where the man was stabbed, how hard, or other details that could affect that. However, if I were to say 'he spun rapidly and thrusted his sword deep into the man's chest,' then you get the details of how hard, where, how fast, and how he attacked. So, basically what I'm saying is that this should not be able to degrade a story, but add depth and give the reader a better understanding of what is going on.
