With a sudden burst, the air rippled with the pulsing of mystical energies. A magical ward had been activated by one or more of their team members. Soahc groaned as he heard something coming to life three floors up, and went to work animating the swords of the three guards that had been killed or concussed by the imploding wall, knowing that the cat was most certainly out of the bag.

The Black Knight

Brodus's idea of using a spirit archer to take out the main watcher worked swimmingly- so close to each other were they that the phantom arrowhead split straight through the man's throat and out the other side, the shaft getting lodged there to prevent any screaming, though little screaming could he do as his trachea was filling up with his own blood, and soon he fell to the ground to drown to death.

As the ghostly ranger turned to fire at the guards below, and the ghostly mercenary went to work on the pulley system, perhaps they or their master, wielding his powerfully magical sword, would feel the tell-tale signs of a magical ward being triggered. Even if so, it would take a second to register it as thus, and in that second it would already be too late.

A trap door behind the ballista- evidently the one used by the guard to get to the tower's top, sprung open on command and a being rose with it. As intangible as the spirits that Brodus had summoned but far more opaque, it took on a womanly shape, though its legs were fused together and its features barely pronounced. It had no arms, but instead large, ethereal hands large enough to be claws floated by its side, and floating above the body without need for a neck was its head, as featureless and pure-white as its body, surface rippling slightly to reveal it being held together by magic, atop its head was white spikes that gave the appearance of a crown.

The spirit archer, whose back was turned away from the trap door in order to target the guards, (who had no magical ability between them and still had no idea that anything was amiss,) was a sitting duck. One of the air elemental's detached claws flew out and straight through the being, dissipating its essence to the four winds as it passed through it. The footless elemental, hovering six inches above the ground, swooped forwards to the front of the parapets to look for any intruders, and was quick to spot Brodus and his mercenary.

Unable to make a sound without a mouth, the elemental's hands swept out again. One rushing past Brodus to aim for the mercenary thrall, the other solidifying as it went to swipe at the ropes of the pulley and plummet the swordsman to his doom.

The Pyromistress

Kira Vesteros's action to move away from the walls before starting her ascent was well founded, as the guards indeed did not notice her rise into the sky. It also put her conveniently out of the way of the air elemental which had just sprung into action, startling the guards that were on the parapets with its ominous entrance of bursting out of the trapdoor below them. As she found a fire and made her own, she would feel herself entering the flame she had conjured, transferring herself over the walls and-

The night air rippled ferociously as the pyromistress came into contact with the anti-teleportation wards that had been bound to the village walls. Without warning and without remorse, Kira Vesteros materialised again high above the village defences, before being catapulted two-hundred feet in the opposite direction.

The Corpse Lord

Ubaid's attempt at flittering out of focus in the mortal plane in order to disguise his approach to the tower worked swimmingly, for now he was clambering up the tower with all of the grace a bronze-clad undead, several millennia out of practise could summon. His more personal attachment to the mystical arts would, perhaps, give him forewarning of the activation of the wards. The trapdoor above burst open, and the sound of billowing winds indicated that an air elemental had just lifted itself out of the topmost floor and into the night. In the few seconds it would take for the elemental to reach the parapets and look for intruders, Ubaid could clamber inside the window he had found for safety- though safety was a relative term.

The floor he had arrived upon was the armoury. All around them weapons were stacked, spears against the walls, sheathed swords, old, dented armour that had needed repairing fifteen years ago but still stood vigil on the workshop bench. One man had his sword to a large spinning stone, which was grating away the bluntness of his great sword. Another sat whistling as he whittled away at making arrows, and the last member in the room seemed to be doing a count to make sure that none of their many spears had been stolen.

It was the whistling whittler that spotted Ubaid first. Automatically he tossed his knife- a small, insubstantial thing, directly at the masked invader as a distraction whilst he reached for a sword. The inventory guard hastily dropped his quill and parchment to retrieve a spear, whilst the third member of the group remained woefully ignorant of their newest arrival.

The Assassin

Sileo Umbra's climb was made with the easy indifference of one who had dedicated their life to the arts of subtlety and subterfuge. The two guardsmen had split off mid argument when the assassin swooped down upon them, but neither of them were able to uttering a warning cry before their corpses slumped to the ground, immobile and slowly being engorged in a dark pool of their own making.

Next Sileo returned to the tower, climbing up it side-facing as was easier accessed from the wall-walk, where he would doubtlessly spy over the parapets the danger that had awakened. The trapdoor was already open as the guard on duty received a hot beverage from a fellow guardsman, so neither of the guards had the forewarning of their coworkers on the other towers that the magical wards around the village had been triggered.

Tall, slender, ethereal and shimmering, the air elemental emerged in a graceful upwards swoop, its near-featureless floating body being followed by its detached hands and head. A gust of wind accompanied its ascent, alerting the guards to its presence- the beverage maker screamed in shock and his beverage drinking companion spilt the cup's contents on himself, yelping in pain as the near-boiling liquid made its way into his codpiece.

Ignoring the both of them, the air elemental swept past them to the front of the parapets, its head looking down for signs of any intruders- but with Sileo currently a quarter of the tower's girth away, he was hidden from its immediate sight. The two guards were looking uncertainly at one another, as though uncertain whether to warn the others or see if the elemental revealed some danger first, and behind the three of them, the trap door remained opened, and unguarded...

Encampment of the Empire

Decan Martha looked completely baffled at the question Alicia had just asked her. "War and glory," she responded, as though quoting propaganda she had been fed her entire life, with her voice indicating that she'd only just managed to prevent herself from ending that sentence with 'obviously'. "To fight for Emperor and God, to live alongside the Holy Legion of Tyrrus, to die in His name and join Him in His eternal halls to feast and fight for all eternity."

With her religious, nationalistic and passionate answers out of the way, she turned to the practical. "We have gold, and can grant safe conduct through these lands. Tybur," she indicated the soldier with a buzzard perched upon his shoulder, treating his sword with a whetstone, "is our armourer and can treat your weapons and armour. If you prove yourselves loyal, I will vouch for you when we return to Messia and you may join our ranks. If the Empire is not for you, then we will simply pay you a handsome fee and let you go your own way when this is done."

Having given what she assumed was a satisfactory response, the decan turned next to Sir Charles, and grinned.

"It is clear that before me stands a godly man," she said, in a way that suggested there was no higher praise. "We're short on provisions; ours is the only contubernium based so far north. We can fix up your armour and provide you with spear, and perhaps we can convince Mugwo to provide us with one of the nets the ogres use to hunt sabresharks. You are a man of great conviction and true spirit, I would be honoured to have you on as an auxiliary. The Scourge of Ann**fn opened Hell's Gates and let the first demon in, and Tyrrus appointed the Empire to banish them once again. This is not up for dispute: the demon must perish."

"Hell to the demon!" Parroted the few soldiers that were in hearing distance.

Alania went to speak up, but Karstone grabbed her shoulder and pulled her back, giving the girl a dark look that silenced her, stupidity written all over her face. Those charged up with religious fervour were the most dangerous of all of mankind, for they believed their quest holy, and would not be stopped. Besides, Karstone was having his doubts about this decan's credentials. Why had the Empire sent envoys half a world away? Why did they send a single unit, if this mission was so important? Why give this mission to a mere decan, and not someone more qualified? Karstone was beginning to suspect that Martha had became a decan through sheer technicality, and had been sent as far away as possible whilst the Empire closed the loophole that allowed her her position.

"So, it's the Empire that's been providing the ogres with all these weapons?" Alania asked the decan, with all the subtle tact of an inebriated eel.

"The Empire is great, but not great enough to provide an entire foreign nation with arms and armour," Martha told the girl. "Both ogre kingdoms certainly have mystery backers, though who they are, I cannot say. Our ambassador is attempting to discover this, but it'll be days before he returns from the city with more news. We know that Ogrin, this kingdom's aggressing counterpart, was the first to start the hostilities, using new magic blasphemously. Whoever is backing the ogres here must simply be enemies of whatever force taught the ogres of Ogrin their magic. These backers have my thanks- the heresy of Ogrin must end."

"An' it don' concern yah tha' yah migh' be gettin' played for fools?" Inquired Karstone pointedly.

"Tyrrus guides our way," Martha answered with a non-committal shrug, as though that settled the matter. "If you want to uncover the mystery yourselves, be my guest. Ogrin is the best place to start, or else join Mugwo as he returns to the ogre city."

The Road North

The man stared fathomlessly into the cave, as though willing for something to emerge from it, when the sound of pattering rain greeted his ears. Waiting for several moments to feel the tell-tale reaction of water impacting the flesh, he instead was met with nothingness, and turned to the skies curiously- and there sighted the Newborn descending.

Lurching to his feet with an agility that made him look like a ragdoll, the man gripped his halberd and pointed it towards the demon arrival, taking several steps back, but not deeming to attack it just yet. It was winged, skinless, bleeding, bleeding so much that it threatened to out-bloody the battlefield they were both settled within. He watched the beast curiously, as though waiting for it to strike, or make any move, fingers wrapping themselves tightly around the shaft of his weapon. Whatever it was that he was facing, it was powerful, so very powerful. Perhaps powerful enough to...

"Can you speak the common tongue?" He demanded, as though this was the only question one person needed to ask to discern whether a demon was going to kill you or not.

Encampment of the Empire

One of the soldiers, by name of Enrael, rose when he saw Kat re-entering the encampment. Having already cleaned his boots half a dozen times and pretending to laugh at Mugwo's jokes more times than he could count, and knowing he did not have the rank to join in decan Martha's investigation of the outsiders, he leapt at the chance of breaking the monotony of being stranded in this ogre wasteland with nothing to do but prowl their very limited perimeter.

"Auxiliary," he greeted her, for that was the title given to all non-ranking units that were assigned to bolster the Empire's ranks. "You were gone longer than usual. If anything interesting ever happened this far from the front lines, I might've been worried." Looking over his shoulder and lowering his voice, perhaps so not to be overheard by the new and unsightly adventurers that had rocked up at their camp, he added, "One of the ogre scouts says there's been fighting to the north east. Mugwo's been hinting that we'll be asked to join the battle, if they advance any further. You've not seen any, y'know, signs of magic, have you?"

The very word 'magic' seemed to unsettle him. In Tywrought, only the priesthood was allowed to study the mystic arts. It was a godly power, and one that the soldiers of the Empire were completely unprepared to battle against. The ogres were godless creatures, certainly, but the thought of them being able to use God-given abilities shook the man to his core.

The Stowaways - Joric Ironfist

Joric listened to the old man's tale. He told it well, and it was almost believable. The dwarf knew very little of Etheldredda. But he didn't quite believe Annie was a demigod. Didn't Fredic* have his doubts about Annie as well?

So, what the stranger was saying was that this was all some grand scheme of Etheldredda's. She wanted Annie to attack the hags so that her power was stolen. But Annie and Ethel seemed to be well acquainted, so for that to be true this would have to go much further back than Joric originally thought. Before even he was involved.

His posture straightened, and his muscles tensed, but his smile remained. "If that's true, then our leader is quite the hag gler." He remarked, chuckling slightly. "Why didn't Fredico mention you?"

Encampment of The Empire - Alicia

Alicia had to stifle a yawn as the Decan gave another speech about religion and duty. Her mind wandered, and it wasn't until the Decan mentioned payment that she caught her attention.

Then they finally got down to the important details - what the Empire knew of everything going on. And as it turned out, not a damn thing. All the Decan seemed concerned about was squashing the magic users.

She took a few moments to ponder her next move. She could work with these soldiers, who had promised her payment, but would they actually deliver? And she always found it difficult to work with fanatics. Or she could look into it without the soldiers' help, who seemed more concerned with wiping out the other kingdom than finding the source of this conflict. Finally, she could also just get the hell out of there and never look back - why bother getting wrapped up in a civil war that had nothing to do to her?

Maybe I should stay... she thought to herself uncertainly. Not just for the promise of payment but for her own curiosity as well.
Beneath the gold, the Bitter Steel.

The Road North

The man before the cave reacted to Spriry soon enough, at first pondering why he couldn't see rain clouds. Spirry landed with, surprisingly, the grace of a cat. If he had landed powerfully, he'd probably send mud and blood flying everywhere. The man, who was much braver than most, pointed his halberd at the skinless demon.

“Can you speak the common tongue?” The man asked, perhaps having former experience with demons.

Spirry's empty eye sockets twitched somehow, a little blood spitting out and nearly hitting the man's shoes, but the demon just stood there, his own blood pooling around his ankles. The man stood his ground as well, briefly looking at the cave, as if expecting someone, but nothing emerged from the darkness of that earthly cavity.

“Yes.” Spirry replied, blood leaking out his mouth for a moment, *I have learned your language by reading the thoughts of others like yourself. I will not attack you, but maybe you'll attack me? I flew here, I don't know why, but I feel something here, a boy? I also sensed something watching me when I first appeared in this world, but I do not know what it was.” He continued, wings and body relaxing; he clasped his hands behind his back.

At this moment, perhaps the man responded to Spirry, but the demon would not make a reaction to whatever was spoken to him. The immense red demon simply peered into the cave.

The blood started reaching the man's feet, and he slightly slid his feet backwards, away from that now-steaming
demonic blood
. Although Spirry could not see, he suddenly quickly walked into the cave, body making wet, squishy noises as he moved, and he soon disappeared in the darkness.

He was definitely curious, and eager to find out how he got here. Whatever reaction the man had, no matter what he thought, he probably had no means to pursue the demon, let alone a pursuit into blackness without a light source. Spirry would eventually find that boy.
