The forest returned to his blurry vision. Kaisen could smell the smoke around him, and his skin was burned. He was blackened with ash. Above him, the silver dragon sat poised to finish the job.
"Well," Aardi sighed, "that's as far as you go. If you give up now, I will spare you the agony of another blast."
Kaisen knew that he could not defeat the dragon. It was hopeless. After all he had done, after all the hardships, it was over. The dragon would not be saved. It would die, and the quest would have failed. All because he hadn't fulfilled his mission. He wasn't sure he could live with himself after that.
Kaisen stood defiantly before the dragon. "Then kill me now," he challenged.
The dragon gazed upon him and roared, obviously expecting Kaisen to run. He did not. The dragon seemed uncertain what to do next. It seemed reluctant to kill Kaisen.
Aardi commanded, "Very well. Kill him."
The dragon roared again, and it released another blast of silver at Kaisen, a direct attack for a quick kill.
