Civic seemed a lot less menacing in the daylight than it had been the previous night. There were mothers watching their children play, people power walking around the park, and John could even see a group of guys not too much younger than him playing flag football off in the distance. If anyone looked out of place, it was him, covered in sweat stains with blood all over his cargo shorts and t-shirt.

'Had any of it been real?' he wondered. 'Sleepwalking all the way back here... that's just crazy.'

He navigated his way back to the motel, trying not to draw any more attention to himself than he already had. His hand was on the door handle to his room when he froze. Did he really want to go inside and prove his fears real? He wasn't afraid of walking inside and seeing a hole in the wall and other battle scars from the previous night; he was afraid of what he might not see.

'What if I go inside and nothing is out of place? What then? It'll mean I've finally gone crazy and can no longer tell fiction from reality.'

John ended up cleaning himself up at a nearby water fountain and then changing into a new set of clothes in his car. By the time he strolled back into town it was around seven, still light outside but with night soon to come.

Having had nothing to eat but a typical bachelor's diet of Ramón noodles and junk food for the past few days, he was starving to get some real food in him. The first restaurant he found was a mix between a fast food joint and family-styled sit down restaurant called Moe's. But once he went up to the front counter and looked at the giant menu on the wall it was like reading a different language. The menu read: bun kababs, hockey pucks, mercury mutts, wedges...

"You're not from around here, are you?"

The voice startled John. The first thing that jumped to his mind was someone had realized he was a runaway, but when he looked down it was just an employee that had come out from the back room, and she took John's breathe away. Her smile was the first thing he noticed, so genuine and sweet. She had light blue eyes and strawberry blond hair that kissed her lightly tanned, rosy cheeks. Even though they had never met, John could tell she was the type of girl that could instantly brighten up a room, and looking at her made him quickly forget all the horrible events of the past twenty-four hours.

"Do I look that out of place?" John asked, noticing that he was uncharacteristically nervous.

"Yeah, you do," she laughed, a honey-sweet voice. "We've got sort of a weird lingo around town. Most people that come in here have no idea what they're ordering."

"Could I just get a burger and french fries, then?"

"A bun kabab and freedom fries coming right up. Take a seat and I'll get that right out for you," she replied as she went off to get him his meal.

"Damn..." John whispered as he watched her walk away. She looked a little bit younger than him, but she was still cute, really cute.

After taking his seat, it didn't take too long for the employee to come out carrying two trays of food.

"Would you mind if I ate with you?" she asked. "It's my dinner time too, and I just hate eating alone."

"That would be fine. I'm John, " he replied.

"I'm Sarah."

The two small talked for a little while. Sarah apparently had lived in Civic her entire life, and her parents owned the restaurant. She was only a grade below John, which he found as a huge relief. The burger she made for him was the best he had ever tasted, and when he told her so, she just blushed and gave her beautiful, cheery smile. But it didn't take long for the conversation to steer towards John and the hard questions.

"So what brings you to Civic?" she asked him.

"Oh, I'm just visiting family around here," he lied, giving her the story he had already worked up in his head. "My cousin's getting married this week."

"That's wonderful! Who's your cousin? If he lives around here I'm sure I know him."

"Oh right. His name is, well..."

"You don't have a cousin around here, do you?"

John was amazed at how quick it took her to see right through him. "I'm that bad of a liar, huh?"

"No offense, but you look kind of out of place. You're visiting family, but you go out to dinner alone? And those dark bags under your eyes don't help much, either."

Cute, and smart. "I don't know," he replied. "I guess there's just a lot going on right now." John wasn't exactly an emotional guy. In fact he was about the exact opposite of one, but for some reason he felt comfortable talking with her about how he was feeling, even when he had kept his family and friends completely in the dark.

"What's going on?" she asked. "Don't worry about me; I won't tell anyone." She seemed genuinely concerned and not at all just trying to be nosey.

"I guess it started a few weeks ago," John replied, amazed that he was actually going to tell someone all of this. "It's my senior year and things started to get real serious. Colleges kept sending me mail and everyone needed a final decision to know where I wanted to go to school and what I wanted to major in. High school started getting pretty demanding and I was just so worried about keeping my GPA up so I wouldn't lose any of my scholarships. Then I had all these other things going on like my job, wrestling, and rugby, and I just started feeling overwhelmed. Then I don't know what happened. I guess I just decided to go on a little vacation to clear myself off all the stress, and somehow I ended up here."

"I'm so sorry to here that. Do you have anywhere to stay tonight? I'm sure my parents wouldn't mind letting you spend the night."

"That's really nice of you, but I've already got a room at one of the local motels." This was only half a lie. Technically he did have a room, but if he went back to that motel and the owner saw all the damage he supposedly caused, he'd probably end up going to jail.

"Alright then. It was really nice talking to you, but I really should be closing this place up now. Here, tell you what," Sarah said as she reached into her purse and pulled out a piece of paper. "I'll give you my number, and you can go with me to church tomorrow. Our pastor is amazing, and I think he'd really be able to help you out."

John took the piece of paper and put her number into his cellphone. He was about to tell her how much all her help meant to him, but when he looked up he noticed Sarah had a really unhappy look on her face, and for the first time this entire evening she was no longer smiling.

"What's wrong?" John asked.

"Don't be too obvious about it, but outside the window there's a man looking at us."

John took a quick, nonchalant glance out the window. At first he couldn't see anything in the growing darkness, but with the light glow of an outside street lamp he could make out the figure of the largest man he had ever seen.

The man was six foot six, easy, and probably weighed a solid two-hundred and sixty pounds. His upper body was massive and had rippling, softball sized muscles on his arms and shoulders. He had charcoal colored skin, so he was obviously of Karamjan descent, and had wild dreadlocks that ran down past his shoulders. He was dressed plainly in a white tanktop and camo colored cargo shorts, and had what looked to be a staff or something slung across his back.

Leon Seronka. That was the man's name. John didn't know how he knew that, but he just did. "That man in the wifebeater, you mean?" John asked.

"Wifebeater? What!?" Sarah exclaimed with a look of absolute disgust on her face.

"Yeah. You don't call white tanktops wifebeaters around here?"

"No! That's such an awful, awful name. But yeah, that tall guy outside? I first noticed him a couple of days ago. I think he's been following me ever since..."

"Do you have a ride home or anything?"

"No. One of the girls was suppose to drive me home, but she never came to work today. I've been working alone for the last few hours.

"I'll walk you home then, and I won't take no for an answer. You're not going out alone with that guy out there."

"Alright, if you insist. I don't live too far away from here. Let me just go and make sure everything is locked up." As she turned away, John reached down to his waistband to double check if his gun was still there. Whatever this Leon guy wanted, he had a feeling he was going to need it.

That should do it for the reserves. Like the main character John, I am not an emotional guy at all, so writing anything resembling a romance, which I've never done before, was kind of a challenge. Don't know if I was able to get the imagery across, but Sarah is suppose to be basically the nicest, sweetest girl on the planet, which is why she's always smiling and was so disgusted at the term 'wifebeater'.

Anyway, I'll hopefully get some more adds up soon. Although Chuk is probobly the only one here that will recognize him, Leon Seronka was actually the main character of another story I wrote on here a while back.
