Kalda led Kaisen and Saren to a winding path next to a high rock cliff-face with crudely-made battlements on top. Kalda stopped them. "Be careful," she whispered. "This place is the thrower troll camp. If they realize we are here, then they could bury us under boulders in no time."

The adventurers creeped along beside the wall, trying to avoid alerting the thrower trolls that they were there. Unfortunately, the throwers already knew that they were there.

"Look out!" Kaisen shouted as he saw the first boulder come falling off the edge. Saren flicked his whip around Kaisen's ankle and pulled him away in time to save him from being flattened by the boulder.

"Let's run!" shouted Saren.

Kalda screamed and pointed skyward. The sky was full of a wave of boulders falling down toward them.

Saren pushed Kaisen and Kalda to the ground and got on top of them. "Brace yourself!" he warned them, and he prayed intently to Saradomin. As his Protect from Range prayer kicked in, the boulders rained down around him. They crashed onto his back with sickening blows. He grimaced with pain, for even though he was unhurt by the projectiles, he still felt their brutal power on his armor.

The boulder storm ceased, and as the dust settled, Saren, Kaisen, and Kalda rose to their feet. They had survived.

"Let's go," Saren commanded, "before the next wave hits."

They left the camp and followed the rocky trail west around the mountain. Finally, they reached a rugged incline that led to a high plateau to the west. "This is it," Kalda announced. "Over that plateau lies the land of the dwarves. All that remains is a climb up the rock."

"Yeah, that might be a little harder than we thought," Kaisen replied.

"Why?"

"Them." Kaisen pointed behind them toward Trollheim. The side of the mountain was dotted with trolls climbing down, making one last chase to stop the fleeing gladiators.

"I suggest we climb fast," Saren said, breaking the silence as they started to frantically scamper up the rocky incline. The surface was littered with rocks jutting out, creating perfect things to hold on to. The only thing that made the climb difficult was doing it before the trolls caught them.

Kalda, an experienced climber, made it to the top first, and she helped Saren get up. Kaisen struggled to make the last few handholds to the top. "Come on," Saren urged. He and Kalda reached out to help Kaisen up.

Suddenly, Kaisen felt a wave of cold shoot up his spine. No, he thought. Not now. The dragon was freezing.

He did not have a free hand to cast the spell to warm it, and it was draining his strength with his body heat. Kaisen began to feel dizzy. He lost his grip and fell down the cliff.

"No!" shouted Saren. He flicked his whip and caught Kaisen around the chest. Straining, he pulled Kaisen up to the top of the cliff with Kalda's help.

Kaisen quickly cast a fire strike to warm the dragon, and then he stood beside his friends, looking at the pursuers coming at them up the cliff face.

"We can't run anymore, can we?" Saren asked.

"I don't think I have it in me," Kaisen replied.

"Then we'll kill them," Kalda said in determination. She carefully examined the edge of the rocky cliff. "Kaisen, cast earth bolt where I point out."

Kaisen was puzzled, wondering what the dwarf girl was up to, but he blasted the ground in each place she pointed out. When they were done, there was a huge fissure in the ground. "Now," she dictated, "you, warrior, I need your strength." She handed Saren a hammer. "Pound away at the fissure until it's open a bit farther." Saren did as she said.

"I don't get it," Kaisen asked. "What are you doing?"

"You remember earlier when they rained stone down at us?"

"Of course."

Kalda wore a grim expression. "I'm about to return the favor. Blast the open fissure with another earth bolt and hide your eyes if you are afraid of death." Kaisen blasted the fissure, and a huge chunk of the cliff came loose and plummeted down its side.

The rock storm hit the approaching trolls with menacing fury, knocking entire legions of trolls falling down to the rocky ground below. Even their tough skin would not protect them from certain death. In mere seconds the earth had buried them in graves down below.

"I kind of feel bad for them," Kaisen remarked.

"In battle, there is no room for such emotions," Saren chastised. "It was either them or you."

"Look over there!" said Kalda. Over on the mountain of Trollheim, the trolls that remained were being attacked by a large army of soldiers dressed head to toe in black armor. They attacked by the hundreds and overcame any trolls that stood in their way, searching the entire mountain for something.

"Black Knights," Saren whispered bitterly. "They are most likely Agaben's forces, looking for the egg. We need to go, now." He turned to Kalda. "Can you show us to Trollweiss?"

"Yes, for my village is at its foot. Just follow me." Kalda led them away from the dark mountain of Trollheim and on to the final leg of the journey to Mount Trollweiss and the wise Sage that lived there.

---Chapter Nine: Blizzard of the Cold Death----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kalda led Saren and Kaisen through the rocky valleys west of Trollheim, and they could tell she became increasingly familiar with the territory. "I used to always explore these mountains," Kalda explained. "One day, however, the trolls caught me." She turned to face them. "Thank you for rescuing me."

"You deserve just as much thanks," Kaisen replied. "Without you we never would have escaped those underground tunnels."

"We all got out all right, and that's all that matters."

Kalda pointed to the horizon. Ahead they saw a high mountain rising above the rest. It was pure white and snow covered. "That is Mount Trollweiss, and at the foot of that mountain is my home, Darkashan village. It is one of the few dwarven cities that is above ground. Come on, it's not far now."

Kalda led them on, until the could see the entire Mount Trollweiss and the small village at its base.

Kalda led Saren and Kaisen into the village Darkashan, Kalda's home. The village was made up of small huts and sat over a rich mine, which its dwarf citizens took advantage of by selling the rare metals for profit. Therefore, they were the richest dwarf city other than Keldagrim, which was underground nearby.

Kalda entered a large house in the center of the village. "Father!" she called out as she entered. An older, rough-looking male dwarf came out of another room. "Kalda?" he asked, stunned. "Oh thank Guthix!" He hugged her as tears of joy ran down his face. "When I heard that the trolls took you, I never thought I'd ever see you again."

"You wouldn't have, Father, if it hadn't been for these brave adventurers." The old dwarf looked at them, sizing them up.

"Thank you both, for the services you did for my family and my village. You allowed me to see my daughter again. What names do you go by?"

"Saren," said Saren, obviously.

"Kaisen," said Kaisen.

"I am Ronakal, chief miner of this village. Please, stay for dinner. It's the least you deserve for your heroism." Saren and Kaisen would have refused, but the thought of food was too overpowering after their long trip.
