The egg collided hard with Takgens' skull, knocking him out on contact. The troll fell over, unconscious, and the crowd roared in disapproval. They could not accept that two of their mighty troll warriors could be vanquished by two humans.

The guards led Kaisen back into the tunnels, but they did not follow the same path to the cells. It was then that Kaisen realized that he was being separated from Saren. As the door of his new cell closed behind him, he huddled in the shadows, alone in the dark tunnels of the Troll Stronghold.

---Chapter Seven: Kalda the Prisoner and Gyak the Murderous-------------------------------------------------------------

Kaisen was alone. The cell seemed so small, so dark without his partner by his side. When Saren was around, even though he wasn't the most polite and likeable person, Kaisen knew he was safe. Now that he was alone, there was no hope in his mind that he would escape the depths of Trollheim.

"Who's there?" asked a soft voice from a cell nearby.

Kaisen was startled. He didn't think anyone else was in the cells in this hall. "I'm Kaisen," he said into the darkness. "Who are you?"

"I am Kalda. What race are you?"

"I'm a human, a mage more specifically."

"Oh, I'm a dwarf." Kaisen could tell from the dwarf's voice that it was a female.

"How long have you been here?" Kaisen asked Kalda.

"I can no longer keep track of time. I came many months ago, but then I was in the other cells. These cells are the ones where the trolls hold the weaker gladiators, to be devoured later against a powerful opponent. I never fought, they just put me here when they noticed I was a female."

"I fought and won, but they still put me here."

"The crowd must have been angry. That's how it goes, when by some fluke a gladiator beats a troll, they send out a weak one like me to be killed and satisfy the need for blood."

"This place is sick," Kaisen shuddered. "Me and my partner, Saren, got thrown in here by choice, but we couldn't escape because we don't know the way out of these tunnels."

"Really? Well, I know most of the tunnels around here."

"You do? That's great! Even the one to the west?"

"Yes. I could lead you out of Trollheim with only a small chance of death."

"Those are better odds than we usually have! Let's do it!"

Suddenly, a troll guard entered the dark corridor. "Dwarf girl!" he barked. "Time to die!" He unlocked the cell and led a sobbing Kalda out of the cell and out to the arena.

Kaisen knew what he had to do. Standing far away from the door, he shot a fire bolt at the lock. With a burst of fire, the door was blown open. Kaisen dashed out of the cell and down the dark tunnel, mentally retracing his steps. Eventually he reached the familiar corridor and ran to Saren's cell.

Saren looked up and saw Kaisen enter the cavernous dungeon. "Kaisen!" he exclaimed. "You're still alive!"

"Of course I am."

"When you didn't return, I thought for sure you were dead."

"No time to talk. Stand back!" Saren got away from the door just as Kaisen blasted it open with a fire bolt. Saren escaped the cell and followed Kaisen through the tunnel toward the arena.

"Why are we going back to the arena?"

"I found a dwarf that can help us escape, but she got taken to the arena to fight. We have to save her!"

"Say no more, I will personally slay whatever she has to fight."

His confidence was ended when a loud voice boomed through the tunnels. It was the announcer, and he said, "Dwarf girl fights Kill Competition champion, Gyak the Murderous!" The crowd cheered, because blood was coming.

Saren and Kaisen barged through the stone doors into the troll coliseum. Kalda was crouched in the corner of the arena, shivering in fear of the massive troll that stood over her. Gyak the Murderous turned out to be much larger than Dad, and twice as menacing. He wore steel battle-armor, and he carried a Great Axe that he carried with ease despite its great weight. The troll spectators roared in delight as Gyak beared down to finish off the dwarf.

"STOP!!!" bellowed Saren. Gyak turned to see who was there, and Saren cracked him over the head with the whip. Gyak staggered back, but he was not dazed for long. He recovered and struck with the Great Axe. Saren grabbed Kalda by the shoulders and dodged the onslaught. The axe broke into the rocky ground, making a fissure and demonstrating its incredible power.

"Come here, human," called Gyak. "I want cut you to bits!" While pulling Kalda, Saren stumbled and fell onto the ground, now at the mercy of Gyak.

Kaisen watched as Gyak prepared to cut down both Saren and Kalda in one fell swoop. Knowing full well that his fire bolt was completely useless against a troll of this size. He desperately searched his memory for a powerful spell that could save his friends. It was a big choice, because if he chose a spell over his mage level, who knows what would happen. Then, a spell in mind, he pulled out a handful of runes and prayed that there were the required runes among them.

He sacrificed some air runes and a death rune, and he felt the power surge out of his hand. The wind blast collided with Gyak, and the massive troll lost his footing. He toppled back and landed flat on his back.

"Good shot!" exclaimed Saren. He pulled out the whip and began to hack away at the fallen troll. Gyak soon recovered, however, and he threw his Great Axe on the ground in favor of two torag hammers. He seethed with anger as he began barrage Saren with blows from the hammers.

Saren jumped back and began to parry Gyak's attacks, which grew more and more fearsome.

Saren parried Gyak's attacks, but the two fighters were too evenly matched. Kaisen and Kalda knew one of them had to tip the balance before the spectators decided that they should intervene. But while Kaisen decided what to do, it was the dwarf girl that took action. Kalda dashed over to the fallen Great Axe and tried to lift it, but she could not. It was built for a troll to lift, and not she nor Kaisen could wield it.

However, it did give Kaisen an idea. "Kalda!" he yelled to the dwarf. "Pull that Axe to your left!" The dwarf complied, and while she struggled to move the Axe into position, Kaisen pulled out an air rune and a law rune.

Kalda succeeded. Gyak was now directly between Kaisen and the Great Axe. Kaisen cast his Telekinetic Grab on the axe, and it soared through the air toward him.

Kaisen shielded his eyes as the axe plowed its way through Gyak's armor and skin, covering the arena floor in a bloody mess. The troll still had a look of shock on his face, and his limp body collapsed, dead, into the pool of blood.

"Go!" Saren called to Kaisen, who was still shaking from killing Gyak. Saren ran over and pulled him with Kalda, and the three gladiators escaped into the tunnels of Trollheim before the mass of spectators chased after them, seeking to tear apart their bones.

-----Chapter Eight: Escape from Trollheim------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saren, Kaisen, and Kalda ran swiftly through the labyrinth of tunnels under the mountain of Trollheim, the troll mob hot on their heels. The caves grew darker and darker the farther they went.

"Which way?" Kaisen asked desperately. Kalda thought hard, trying to picture the tunnels. Saren stood behind them, lashing out at any troll that got close enough.

"I thought you knew them!" Kaisen exclaimed.

"Take your time," Saren called out sarcastically, for the trolls' number was steadily increasing. Several had broken through, only to be punished by a fierce pounding by Saren.

"This way," Kalda called, and she began to lead the adventurers through the tunnels. They began to gain ground on the trolls, for the chasers began to get farther and farther away. "Oh no!" Kalda screamed.

The tunnel had been blocked off by a cave-in. They were trapped between a thick rock wall and a mass of attacking, bloodthirsty trolls.

"There's no way out," Kaisen muttered in shock.

"There is one way," Kalda said, but she grimaced as she said it. "Past the entrance to the Stronghold is a rugged incline that we might be able to climb. We would have to run past these trolls, all the way to the arena, out into the mountains, past the front wall of Trollheim, and climb the mountain. After that, it would only be a short walk to Trollweiss."

"But that would mean going all the way through the Stronghold!"

"Indeed. It's the only way."

Kaisen moaned. "I was afraid she was going to say that."

"I look forward to it," Saren said, grinning. "We'll fight our way through it." He prepared his whip for the attacking crowd of trolls.

The trolls reached the three, and Saren struck down several with his whip before they knew they were in danger. "Come on!" he called to his friends as he opened a path in between them.

Kalda, being a dwarf, was so short she escaped notice by the trolls. Kaisen, however, was not so lucky. He had to roll and dodge clubs, punches, and assorted other weapons. He used his newfound wind blast spell to blow many of the trolls out of the way. The wind blasts and Saren's whip's brute force carved the trio a path through the bloodthirsty monsters. Kaisen and Kalda eventually escaped the crowd and ran around a corner through an abandoned tunnel.

"Stop!" Kaisen called out to Kalda. "What about Saren?"

Suddenly, Saren came running around the corner. Behind him was a rabid bunch of trolls, drooling for blood. "RUN!!!" he called out to Kaisen and Kalda. They obeyed and began to flee, Saren hot on their heels, and the trolls hot on his.

Kalda and Kaisen ran until they pushed open the stone double doors and entered the arena. The stone tiers that overlooked the arena floor were empty because all the trolls that had previously stood in them were now chasing them. The arena now looked so much brighter than when they had been dragged into it to their supposed deaths.

Saren burst through the doors and shut them behind him. "Hey, mage boy!" he said to Kaisen. "I could use a little bit of help here."

"Oh, right." Kaisen found some earth, air, and chaos runes, and he shot several earth bolts over the doorway. The wall cracked and collapsed, sealing the door shut behind tons of rock and debris.

The trolls pushed on the doors, but to no avail. The doors would not open. "Let's go," Kalda suggested, "before they try to head us off using the other tunnels."

Saren scoffed. "I doubt it, trolls aren't exactly scientists. We do need to go, though, so we're not seen by trolls up here."

"Follow me." Kalda led them out of the arena and to the center of Trollheim.
