The other two demons shed no tears over the death of their comrade. They immediately turned and launched a counterattack on Saren. Unable to raise his shield in time, Saren could not stop them, so he prayed.

Saren glowed with a blue light. The demons struck the barrier of blue energy that surrounded him, and their attacks bounced off, having no effect. Saren whipped around and struck, ending the lives of the two demons with three quick strikes.

"That was fun," Saren said bluntly as the blue light vanished.

"How did you do that?" Kaisen asked, his mouth open at how fast Saren did away with the fierce demons.

"They were weak."

"I mean how did you protect yourself from their attacks?"

"Oh, that. As a Temple Knight, my connection with Saradomin must be strong. My prayer is powerful, and I can pray that Saradomin protect me from any type of combat."

"That's good, maybe we have more a shot than I thought."

"Not if I don't find an altar of Saradomin to pray at to replinish my power. That's why I will only use prayer if absolutely necessary. Come on, we need to leave before more demons come along."

Saren and Kaisen stalked around boulders, trying to hide from the other creatures that hunted these barren plains. Then, Kaisen noticed a derelict building in the distance. It was missing most of one wall and looked abandoned, like it had not been inhabited since ancient times.

"Do you think we should go to that building?" Kaisen asked.

"Maybe," Saren replied. "We might find some clues in there of what happened to the city and where it might be." Saren and Kaisen walked up the hill and stood outside the house.

"Be careful, there might be something inside," Saren warned before he barged into the dilapidated structure.

The room was dark and small. The floor was littered with bones, and the corners were covered in darkness. Kaisen lit up a torch with a fire strike and waved it around, illuminating the run-down house.

A man was huddled in the corner. His eyes were wide, and he was shaking violently. His eyes showed a look of pure terror.

"Hey, you!" Saren shouted, of course having no courtesy. "We're looking for the Demonic Ruins." The man did not answer. He didn't even look at them. It was like he wasn't even there. "Hey!" Saren raised his voice. "Answer me! We're looking for Ak'Namozk."

The man looked at them when Saren said that last word. "Ak'Namozk," he whispered. "I used to live there."

"You did?" Kaisen asked skeptically. "It existed a long time ago."

"I can't die, it's all because of this stupid amulet!" he shouted, pointing to the opal amulet that hung around his neck. My brother gave it to me. He knew its power, and he cursed me!" The man started sobbing.

"Why don't you just take it off?" Saren asked.

"Come on," Kaisen returned. "It's probably enchanted so that it can't come off."

"Why is being immortal so bad? It seems more like a gift."

"It wouldn't be so bad if I hadn't lost my mind!!!!" he shouted, talking to the wall rather than Saren or Kaisen.

"This guy is crazy," Saren remarked to Kaisen.

"Exactly!" the man wailed. "I am cursed to be like this forever!"

"This guy seems ancient," Kaisen whispered to Saren. "Maybe he will recognize the egg."

"Worth a shot."

Kaisen removed the dragon egg from the pocket of his robes. The man shrieked as he saw it. "Put that thing away!" he howled.

"Why?" Kaisen asked. "What did it do to you?"

"It took away my mind. I lost my sanity to this beast."

"Do you remember a curse placed upon it?"

The man smiled grimly. "Yes, it was my best work. They brought it to me and told me it was Saradomin's, and asked me to kill it. Even the most powerful warriors were unable to break it open, so it was up to me. I remembered what the great Sage said, and I used his ice magic to put the curse upon it. But it was too powerful. The dragon seems harmless in its egg, but its magic is still much stronger than anyone else's. It used its magic to make me insane."

"This is your doing," Kaisen said bitterly to the dragon egg. "You must undo this."

"Why are you helping him?" Saren asked.

"Because no one deserves to spend eternity like this." Kaisen pulled on the necklace, trying to wrench it off the man's neck. The man yelled in pain, but Kaisen kept at it. Suddenly, the dragon egg glowed, and the beast inside righted the wrongs it committed. It flashed with power, and suddenly the necklace was removed from the man's neck. The man immediately became a skeleton, his soul finally able to pass on.

The necklace radiated with light, and a loud voice boomed throughout the building. "I do not know if the dragon will survive to hear this message," the voice began, "but I will leave this so that if by a miracle the egg lasts, the carriers of the dragon egg must seek me out. I am the Sage of Trollweiss, and I have the power to heal the dragon. Come to me on Trollweiss Mountain, far to the west of the city of Ak'Namozk. Waste no time, for the dragon is priceless."

As the message faded, Kaisen and Saren left the Demonic Ruins, going westward toward the land of the trolls and the first clue of how to heal the dragon.

---------Chapter Five: Troll's Blood Pass------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The travelers crossed the Wilderness to the west. Saren made quick work of several Moss Giants that had the bad idea to try and kill him, but the rest of the journey was quite smooth. The dark soil of the Wilderness began to transform into the rugged stone hills of the troll mountains. The adventurers were going from one danger to another. From the threat of being slaughtered by dragons and demons to being slaughtered by trolls.

Saren led Kaisen to the foothills of Trollheim, a massive mountain that housed the trolls in their intricate underground stronghold. To the south-west was Death Plateau, an encampment of warrior trolls.

Saren ordered, "Let us keep to the rugged parts of the mountains where very few trolls travel. That way it is less likely that we will be seen."

"Good idea." Saren and Kaisen hiked through the rugged mountains. The landscape was incredibly hard to traverse. They struggled for each yard they traveled, but they pushed their way on through the mountains.

The terrain finally got to the point where Saren and Kaisen were unable to cross it. The path ended at a high cliff, which was impossible to scale. Saren sighed. "I was afraid of this. We've reached a point in the mountains where it is impossible to cross without proper climbing equipment. This place is called the Barrier, and the only way through is a place called Troll's Blood Pass. It is a gate into Trollheim guarded jealously by the trolls. There is no way we can pass through it forcefully, and I doubt they will let us through."

"We have to try," Kaisen pleaded. "Otherwise we won't reach Trollweiss in time."

"I suppose we can try Plan B."

"What's Plan B?"

Saren shushed Kaisen because a large group of trolls were passing by. Then, he dragged Kaisen out into their path.

"Human!" one shouted, and the others quickly came and bound Saren and Kaisen in chains. Just like that, the adventurers were captured.

Kaisen was scared, but he trusted that Saren had a plan at this point. The plan worked, for the trolls escorted them through Troll's Blood Pass into Trollheim. It did not work, however, because they were locked in a dungeon deep within the stronghold in the depths of the troll empire.

--------Chapter Six: The Gladiators of the Arena-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Kaisen and Saren were led to separate cells in the dungeon, but they were across the hall from each other. Only when the trolls left did they speak.

"What kind of plan was that?" Kaisen asked angrily.

"The kind that succeeds and gets us through the gate."

"Yeah, but it also got us caught. Now, we're trapped in the depths of Trollheim, and who knows what could happen to us." He began to collect runes from the pouch at his belt. "I'm blasting us out of here."

"You can't!" Saren commanded. "The tunnels under this mountain extend for miles. We could wander around forever in the tunnels and starve to death, or worse. We could be eaten by whatever creatures live down there. The fact is that I have no idea where the exit is."

"Then why did you get us captured?"

"I didn't count on them blindfolding us on the way in here. Until we find someone who knows the area, we should just stay here. What's the worst that could happen?"

Kaisen and Saren took the opportunity while in the cell to sleep and gain the rest they missed while traveling feverishly across the Wilderness. They rested peacefully until a troll guard came into the dungeon and banged on their cells.

"Wake up, humans!" bellowed the troll. "Trolls want you to fight." Kaisen and Saren stirred and looked up at the ugly beast, which was not the sight they wanted to see after a nap. "Which one of you will fight?" the troll asked through rotting teeth.

"That would be me," Saren announced calmly, no doubt protecting Kaisen.

"You eager to die, then. You will die. Not last long against Dad." The troll opened Saren's cell door and led him down the tunnels to a large, open area. The area was a circle, with rows of cliffs overlooking it, on which stood numerous trolls, all drooling with excitement of the thought of blood. Saren knew that this must be an arena for sport, or slaughter.

The trolls roared as Saren entered. Apparently they were already envisioning how many pieces Dad was going to break Saren into. Saren walked defiantly to the center of the coliseum. Then, he turned his attention to a doorway on the other side of the arena.

The huge, stone double doors opened and a mammoth beast emerged. It was a troll, but it was much larger than any Saren had seen yet. It had a fierce and malevolent expression on its face, and its skin was like stone armor. It held a tree trunk as a club. It looked like the club was dyed red, but it was actually covered in the blood of the victims it tore apart.

"Here runner up in Kill Competition, Dad!" bellowed a troll announcer in a booming voice. This statement brought out roars of cheer from the troll audience. Runner up? thought Saren. He didn't want to meet the champion.

"Against this puny human!" The crowd booed and mocked Saren. Too bad, thought Saren. They weren't going to like it when he demolished their idol.

"Begin!" shouted the announcer, and Dad moved in with his club. He swung the club at Saren, but Saren pounced away to evade the crushing blow. Saren smiled bitterly. He loved the thrill of mortal combat.

Saren swished his whip at Dad, but Dad blocked it with his forearm and swiped out with the club. This time Saren did not have time to dodge it. The club connected with his torso and hurled him back into the stone wall. He lost his breath as he collided with the wall and he slumped to the floor in pain.

Saren wiped the blood from his mouth. He couldn't use his prayer yet, he might need it later. But he might have to use it, or die before this mighty beast.
