Myra felt her face split as the attack connected, and was sent reeling against some nearby shelves. When she heard the mage begin chanting once more, the Allivierion agent decided to cut her losses and make a desperate run for the ceremonial blades. Luckily for her, they were close enough that she could successfully grab them before the spell was finished.
Unluckily for her, she did*’t have enough time to turn around and try to kill the mage before the spell was finished. As soon as her hands touched ancient leather, she felt a searing blast of pain flow throughout her body, and it took all she could muster to not scream and crumple to the ground.
What happened next confused her. Something growled fiercely, and the sound of bones breaking filled the room, followed by pitiful whines. She also heard Surok scream something, followed by a bellow from the dwarf as well as cackling flames and a hint of smoke in the air.
Myra managed to turn herself around despite the pain she felt, and only saw what she assumed was to be the aftermath of the fight.
Surok stood in the middle of the fiery pentacle, his eyes glowing with arcane and ancient power. Beside him was the desert girl, whose hands were also on fire. She also looked surprised at the whole thing, but whether it was Grazj’s charred remains or the increasingly demonic transformations happening to the Spider, Myra did*’t know.
As for Mori, she was still alive, unfortunately. If Myra could move without hurting herself, she definitely would’ve tried to fix that mistake and take one more of the Brotherhood members out. But she was lucky to be alive at that point, much less feel anything, and so she decided that discretion was the better part of valor in this case.

“It seems this was a success after all,” Surok said. The air around the pentacle began growing more pale and green as he spoke. “I can feel the spell working to penetrate the veil at once!”
“But…I don’t even know that spell!” the desert girl cried. “How did I manage a Fire Surge like that?”
“The same way you’ll possibly survive what’s to come,” Surok replied. “Remember what happened here, mageling. Learn from it.”
Mori launched a small group of magical darts towards Surok, but the mage simply willed them to disappear once they came within reach of the pentacle. “As for you, Mori,” he said. “I never did like you. But I need you to pass on a message for me.”
“Not going to happen,” Mori spat as she approached Surok. “I know ways to counter what you can throw at me, so don’t think you can threaten me like that.”
“Then do it,” Surok said. “Do it, and prove yourself my superior.” Mori blinked, and stood mere inches away from the pentacle…and did nothing.
“That’s what I thought,” he said. “Now, that message? Tell the Gentleman that I quit. If he wishes to pursue me because of that, he’s more than welcome to. But he shall have to deal with my own allies as well.”
“I’ll…remember that,” Mori replied.
“Good girl,” Surok said mockingly. He waved his hand, and Mori’s form started to shimmer. Before she could protest, the shadowy woman was gone, leaving Myra alone with the mages and Spider. Turning to the nearly transformed Spider, he added, “And as for you? We shall meet at the Gate. If I’m successful, that is.”
“Belial goxh faus’,” the Spider replied.
“I’m sure he will be,” Surok chuckled. “Now, I must bid my farewell. The time to act is now, and I intend to make sure there’s something for me to come back to!”
The pentacle flared up, and seemed to swallow Surok completely. There was nothing fancy about it, there was just fire…and then nothing. He just wasn’t there anymore.

But the Spider still was, and he wasn’t looking any better than before. The desert girl seemed terrified of him, and barely kept her composure as the Spider looked around, only to barge through a wall and nearly cause the ceiling to collapse in on itself.
The girl was nearly panicking as the rumbling stopped. In fact, Myra was pretty sure that the girl was still panicking by the time she coughed something onto the floor, and would’ve kept on panicking if she hadn’t tried moving at all, only to fall flat on her face as a result.
The girl approached her cautiously. *That guy’s with you, right?” she asked. “Did you know he could do…whatever he just did?”
Myra coughed, and fought to speak through her pain. “Yes, and no,* was all she could say. She also wanted to add that now would be a good time for some healing magic from the girl, but between the agony and simple fact that the girl might not even know such spells; her situation seemed almost hopeless without a miracle.
The girl’s eyes lit up at the sight of Myra’s blade. “You have a Moonclan dagger? Why did*’t you use it during the fight?”
“Dunno,* Myra rasped between painful stabs in her body. “Just grabbed it. Dunno what it does.”
“In that case, here,” the girl said as she snatched the blade from Myra’s numb hands. Even if she had the strength to resist, she thought letting the mage mess around with the dagger would at least buy her a few spare moments to try and get out of the room before anything got worse. As it stood, she was now without allies in the middle of enemy territory, terribly hurt, and on top of that she did*’t even know where she was!

“Let’s see…matrix is the swirly thing. That means the vector for the flow will be*this squiggle? No, wait…it’s this circle,” the girl rambled on as Myra tried inching her way towards the newly created hole in the wall. Despite the searing pain that flared up every time she bumped up against something while moving in a manner that passed as ‘fast’, the agent managed to get to the edge of the hole before the mage exclaimed, “Hey, think I got it! Hold still!”
Myra did*’t have time to respond before a warm glow invaded the murky chambers. The warmth increased in intensity for a few moments, and flowed over her body and seemingly through her very blood. She felt some degree of vitality flood into her battered body, and was more than grateful when she found she could reliably push herself onto her feet and stay standing for more than two seconds. The feeling stayed when the glow faded, and Myra turned to face the young mage. Just in case.
This time she had the chance to take the mage’s measure more clearly. The girl was in reality a young woman who appeared to be entering her prime years, but the child-like wonder in her eyes at Myra’s magical recovery did*’t reinforce that fact at all.
And if her battered blue robes were anything to go by, she was either too inexperienced to be a real threat in the current situation, or she was simply overwhelmed by the strange attackers from mere moments ago and only just beginning to regain any semblance of arrogant composure magic users were notorious for. Nevertheless, that did*’t stop the woman from talking very rapidly in excitement.
“Oh thank the gods it worked!” she said. “I’d hate to think what else would’ve gone wrong if I was wrong and ended up accidentally killing the only other person I’ve run into here that isn’t overly evil. You *are* a good guy, aren’t you?”

Myra hesitated at the question. As an agent of Allivierion, she has been exposed to some relatively questionable activities that were necessary to do her job in the past. But that did*’t necessarily make her ‘evil’ overall, or at least not as bad as anyone else in the current situation was. Then again, in an area where Surok Magis himself just leapt straight into hell itself to consort with demons mere moments ago, it was easy for her to simply nod and say, “Yes. Yes, I am. The name’s Myra. Who’re you?”
“Azura,” the mage replied. “I’d say it’s nice to meet you, but…well…after the day I’ve had so far I’d rather wait to see if I’m still in one piece before saying anything like that”
“Maybe you can make it better for the both of us,” Myra said. “I know you magic types can teleport around. Would you happen to know a spell that gets the both of us out of here?”
Azura shrugged. “I know a few things, but they’re a little too explosive to risk now that your friend just tore a hole in the wall. And no, I don’t know many Lunar spells either. Not that you’d really wanna go to the places the Moonclan directed them towards anyway. At least, not unless you like forests up north.”
“Then a simple teleother on me and a teleport on yourself will do,” Myra replied.
Azura approached the agent and closed her eyes. Whether or not she was faking any sort of spellcasting ritual, Myra did*’t know, but she did feel a slight charge fill the air followed by the smell of…smoke?
Azura immediately opened her eyes after catching wind of the scent. She backed up, and gasped when she looked down and saw blue flames sizzling out to nothing on her hands. The young lady also had quite the mouth on her, as Myra soon found out after the fact.
*Sorry, but something’s blocking the spell,” Azura said in a worried tone.

“I did*’t see any runes, so maybe that’s your problem?” Myra suggested.
“That might help, but I personally don’t need them for simple stuff like teleporting myself or someone else somewhere,” she said.
“That shouldn’t be possible,” Myra said, surprised at the revelation.
“Anything’s possible with the right talent and practice,” Azura retorted. “Just because contemporary magical theory says humans can** use magic without runes doesn’t mean it’s actually true. If anything, I think that’s just bull crap made up by the Magic and Runecrafting Guilds to build up a dependency on runestones to support their monopolies.*
*That’s an interesting theory, but I think we’d better find a way out of here before any more Brotherhood members show up for a fight,” Myra said as she turned and entered the hole the Spider created in his rampage. “And I’m sure as hell not going back the way I came from, so maybe my possessed little friend managed to burrow a way out for us. You can come with me if you want, but try anything funny and I’ll be sure to make sure you won’t be around to try again.”
“Wait, Brotherhood?” Azura asked as she followed the Allivierion agent’s footsteps. “Aren’t those guys based in Varrock like the papers have been saying?”
“Yeah, so that must mean we’re either in Varrock, or at least close to it,” Myra replied, squinting in the increasing darkness. “By the way, can you get a light in here at all? I hate to sound rude, but if you insist on following me, we might as well help each other out like that.”
“Sure thing,” Azura said. She spoke a single arcane word, and all of a sudden a bright light invaded Myra’s senses and temporarily blinded her. Luckily it did*’t last long, and her sight easily adjusted to the newly illuminated cavern.

“He shouldn’t have been able to do this,” Myra whispered to herself. “He couldn’t even break through a glass window a few months back during a robbery.”
“Oh, yeah, before I forget,” Azura interrupted as she slid something into Myra’s belt. “Here’s your blade back. Sorry, but I forgot about it for a second.”
Myra thanked the mage as she took the dagger and gripped it tightly in her right hand. Despite her not being at full strength, she felt safer with it at the ready. Not that she was confident in its ability to harm a possessed vigilante if the worst came to pass.
On the other hand, something Azura said did stick with her. “I have a quick question for you,” she said. “You said this was a Moonclan blade, and not too long after the fact you ended up healing me with it. I think. Just what exactly did you do to get the dagger to do that?”
“Simple. At first I thought it was some ultra complicated activation measure, like…say…rubbing a certain spot at a certain angle for a certain period of time. But it’s not; you just need to rub the hilt like you do an enchanted ring.”
“That’s it? That seems…too convenient.”
“I agree,” Azura replied. “Not that free healing isn’t good. But power like that comes with a price. If I were you, I’d wait until we get back to civilization to study that thing more in depth, and try not to use it too much.”
Myra agreed, but that did*’t stop Azura from talking. “I have a question for you now. Just who was that…demon…monster…guy that came in with you anyway?”
“That ‘demon’ is actually a man I only know as the Spider,” Myra replied. “All I know about him is he’s…odd.”
“How so? Outside of the demonic energy stuff he just pulled on those shadow dogs back there.”
“I’m afraid I was too hurt to see what happened,” Myra said glumly. Just what did the Spider do while she wasn’t looking back there?

“It’s probably good you did*’t,” Azura said. “The stuff he did was…gruesome. And this is coming from someone who hangs out with two guys who eat fresh corpses without actually preparing them into food on monster hunting trips!”
“I don’t even want to know how you know them,” Myra said. “Anyway, this is the first time I’ve actually seen him act like that. He’s usually more focused and coherent for a guy that seemingly lives in a damn suit of black leather all the time as far as I’m aware of.”
“So you’ve never seen him use anything magical?”
“I know he has a few supernatural powers, but I’m not him. I don’t have the faintest clue just what he can really do if he cuts loose,” the agent replied. “Now, how far does this damn tun…oh, crap. Is this his doing too?”
The pair came to a sudden stop as the tunnel they were in widened out to encompass a massive cave that stretched on for what might have been miles. Though they could see the opposite wall in the distance through the gloom, there was no end in sight to neither their left, nor their right. Small patches of sunlight peeked from the ceiling in select patches and cracks, giving the cave an ethereal quality to it, which would almost be strangely calming if it wasn’t for the sound of faint squealing echoing in the distance.
“This actually looks natural,” Azura noted. “If it was made by someone or something, they either don’t live around here anymore or something got to them and wrecked this place real badly.”
Myra gripped her stolen blade in one hand while steadying herself with the other as she ventured into the cavern proper. The walls were literally a mishmash of dirt and stones, but she was lucky enough to find the odd root or two poking out to grab onto.

Azura followed her lead, and so the unlucky pair ventured into the cave. Myra decided to go to her left at first after deciding the squeals weren’t coming from there, and after going around a relatively nondescript bend of dirt and ancient bedrock, they came upon a grisly sight. Azura almost bumped into her so sudden was the shock from the scene that washed over her.
“That’s….really bad news,” Myra whispered. Azura only blinked in surprise, though Myra supposed the young mage hadn’t heard her over the sudden strengthening of the unnatural squeals.
Or maybe, in retrospect, the source of the pained noises was just too distracting for her. Before the pair were two massive beings locked in mortal combat. One was obviously a mole, but one which was a lot larger than any animal of the species should ever be by natural occurrences. It also bore many open gashes and bleeding wounds that looked like a deep blade had seared through its thick, coarse coat of dull fur.
The other figure was a bat-like and well-muscled dark creature that seemed to make a mockery of conventional descriptions of demons with its unnerving web of what looked like human bones covering it almost like armor covered a mortal being. Myra knew in her heart that the thing was what the Spider had turned into, but the fast changes in his appearance had truly frightened her in ways that no mere street criminal in Varrock ever could.
The two unnatural titans clashed brutally, causing the cavern to shake some dust and dirt loose from the ceiling as natural claws glanced off of gleaming bone, demonic strength tore yet another **** in mortal flesh, or the two had somehow ended their attacks in a stalemate that seemed too convenient to be truly believed.

The being that was the Spider growled something in the language of demons as the mole lurched forward and bit into his shoulder, causing some of the bone-armor to fall off as a result of the attack.
The sound of bone crunching drowned out the mole’s squeals as the Spider grasped what he could of the animal’s head and twisted it quickly and brutally, but not enough to the point where the mole was dead. The animal managed to squirm out of the demonic grasp and limp back to take a second wind, but it did*’t get far before the Spider screamed something unintelligible and unholy.
To its credit, the mole was smart enough to close the gap between it and the Spider before it caught on fire and began swelling rapidly. It managed to grab a hold of one of the demon’s arms before it exploded in a geyser of gore and hellfire, causing a loud pop to echo throughout the cavern.
The ceiling began to crumble as some of the mortal remains that did*’t end up horribly disintegrated in the blast rocketed straight into it, and in a manner of seconds the sounds of an avalanche heralded the arrival of the first true glimpse of sunlight Myra had seen in what seemed like years.
The Spider-Demon roared at the sudden intrusion of the light, but did*’t seem to be adversely affected as it began crawling out of the rubble. It stopped for only a split second to look around, and for a brief moment she Myra froze as the creature’s gaze passed over her. It did*’t say anything, but it did look like it was struggling in its own mind against some unholy compulsion to bring down the entire cave system.
But, in the end it decided not to, and so it crouched down and sprang into the air with a leap that would make any rouge worth their salt green with envy.
