Hound wandered the upper floors of the castle with purpose in his stride. Although he wore the traditional armor of a mere Proselyte of the Temple Knights, the White Knight defenders made obvious efforts to stay out of his way once they saw the dragonsilver sword in his hands.

Cries of “Fliers on the battlements!” rang in the air as the defenders struggled to rush into defensive positions while either drawing their weapons or working their way into spare armor after discarding equipment from more recent skirmishes of the siege. Luckily for Hound, he was more than ready when a small group of black-winged knights burst through one of the doors not too far in front of him and began to cut through the defending ranks with little struggle.

Unluckily for the initial invaders, he was also quick with blades in general. With both natural and enhanced talent, quick swordwork managed to maim, dismember, or outright kill the small invading party while preserving his own allies from harm. The surviving Raven Knights hissed at the sudden and brutal resistance, and their form began to grow blurry and waver as they attempted to transform into mist.

One knight managed to finish off an enemy mid-transformation with a decapitating strike, but nobody else was just as lucky. One by one, the vampyric knights attained intangibility and drifted among the confusion created by yet more Raven Knights pushing their way into the corridor. This time, Hound did*’t attack any of them. He simply rushed headlong into the fray without making so much as a squeak.

The vampyres were evidently surprised by the simplistic move, for Hound saw they fell back easier than he expected them to under the circumstances. Sunlight greeted his eyes as the dark fluid that passed for ‘blood’ among the dying vampires splattered his armor and weapon, and he noticed that it did*’t seem to affect the nocturnal creatures in the slightest. Part of him expected that (he did see them in the distance at one point after arriving home, after all), but the sheer numbers of ramifications of the fact gave him slight pause.

Such a pause was all the Raven Knights needed to send swarms of purple energy in the form of bats his way. The necrotic substance washed over his armor, tainting both it and his very skin with each slam of ‘bat’ against him. His knees buckled from weariness, and a nearby knight who tried to rush out and help him was cut down by a sword strike meant for the Temple Knight’s neck. As the dying knight fell, the Raven knight swung once more at Hound, only to have his blow parried out of seemingly nowhere.

Hound willed his way through the weariness and pain caused by the enemy onslaught, and forced his foe’s weapon close to their face with surprising strength. The vampyre knew it was in trouble when Hound drew his face close to the black helmet.

“This isn’t possible,” the Raven Knight hissed. *You should be dead by now!*

*You won’t get any argument from me there,” Hound retorted as his gaze bore into the enemy’s eyes, which he saw widen through small slits in the helmet. The Temple Knight simply slammed his head against the vampyre’s, which caused the immortal creature to crumple to the ground rather helplessly.

The Raven Knights around him stopped their collective magical attack and rushed with drawn blades towards Hound, who was surprised to see a host of White Knights in well-maintained armaments rush out to aid him. The melee was quickly joined, with both Raven and White Knight parrying, riposting, or outright maiming and killing each other in equal measure.

For his part, Hound managed to deflect blows from all sides during the brawl thanks to his enhanced reflexes granted by the scented oils. One of his attacks managed to smash open a black helmet, which caused a loud shriek accompanied by smoke rising from the **** courtesy of the vampyre’s natural aversion to direct sunlight.

The Raven Knight took to the air in a panic with a single flap of its wings, and following the flying figure with his eye revealed a dark-clad shape sitting on the rooftops watching the melee with disinterest.

Hound looked away for just one second to deflect an incoming blow and kill the attacker by removing its head, but when he looked back it was gone. His instinct told him he just caught a glimpse of the Wererat and that he most likely wouldn’t get another shot at it if he stayed behind to fend off the rapidly overwhelming Raven Knight forces.

It only took him a brief moment to make a decision and abandon the fight. Wrenching his weapon free of a dying opponent, Hound swung his sword through the air in a pentagonal pattern, which caused the air to thicken and violently force the horde of enemies back as the weapon came to a stop. He took his opening and bounded toward the building he saw the figure on top of with agility that was seemingly impossible for a normal human.

Luckily for him, his allies did*’t seem to notice that little fact as he left the fight. They instead focused on slaying as many vampyre knights as they could before their position was overwhelmed and driven back once more.

The Baron giggled to himself (though others might as well call the sound some kind of garbled sneeze) at the sound of the magical eruption in the courtyard as he blinked into a small hall overlooking the carnage.

The ruse did*’t take too long to discover, so he did*’t wait to see how well the defenders fared against his goblin legions when they rushed the gate en masse. His purpose there was just too important for such vanity, and time was of the essence if he was to pull everything off perfectly.

The ogre made his way steadily through the too perfect hallway to a nearby staircase. The sounds of steel ringing on steel echoed from below, and the sound of heavy flapping and crunching stone of landing boots from above told him that at least the vampyres were playing their part well.

Tugging on a decorative piece of hair jewelry, the Baron willed himself through space and into the area below. He appeared in the middle of a small skirmish between White Knights and his own goblins, who were accompanied by a few cockatrices as well. The knights, stunned at his sudden appearance, turned to attack him, only to be knocked down from behind by a goblin or cut down by a lizard-bird’s baleful gaze.

The Baron paid the defenders who remained alive long enough to fight back no mind, and pushed through them without much effort as he tried remembering the castle’s floor plans.

If he was correct, the room containing the Herald’s office wasn’t too far away. All he had to do was go up a flight of stairs, maybe through some defending knights, and he’d hit it without much trouble unless the White Knights renovated anything within the past few years (a slight possibility, he thought, but not likely given that the worldwide events going on in recent years probably held much more interest for the organization than simply moving things around).

He saw what he assumed to be the correct flight of stairs to take ahead, and quickened his pace. So far he considered himself lucky that none of the Temple Knights had crossed paths with him, but he did*’t want to tempt fate too much if he could help it. So it was when he reached the stairs and made his ascent that he allowed himself a slight sigh of relief.

Though chaos was surrounding the castle, the main room leading to the Herald’s office seemed relatively well kept. Sure, bloodstains and corpses of fallen enemies lay haphazardly around the room, but that was to be expected during a war. What he did*’t expect to see, however, were the corpses of the vampyric knights staked to the walls.

He knew that the White Knights couldn’t have done such work so quickly due to the increased pressure on the battlements, nor could it have been Rock. The foreign Crow had a strange aversion to staking an enemy’s heart after defeating it, and besides, he was supposed to be at the other end of the castle facilitating a small group of basilisks into the castle by now.

Warily, the ogre drew his cleaver-like blade and continued towards the office. He did*’t know if whoever managed to take out some of the vampyres was still around, but it couldn’t hurt to be prepared. Either way, the door to his destination was near, and he heard faint muffled sounds coming from beyond it. He silently moved closer so he could hear much better.

“…hard work,” one of the voices said. “Seriously, did he expect us to be professionals at this?”

“He’s a Temple Knight,” another voice replied. “He probably thought we could’ve done some super secret move or something like he could.”

“Like getting the drop on some vampyres? I gotta admit, that was the best luck we’ve had all day. I’d hate to think what would’ve happened if we did*’t end up getting thrown through some furniture during the fight. People do die from that, you know!”

“And now you went and scared the imp,” the voice retorted. “Look, let’s just call it quits and go look for her already. If Hound needs help, he looks like he can handle himself. We might not have that luxury the next time something big comes at us.”

The Baron felt he heard enough. Whoever was in the office surely wasn’t an enemy to him personally, but they did seem capable enough to put up a fight, if their handiwork was anything to go by. And besides, they were between him and his goal, which in itself was enough to warrant his personal attention.

Before he could react, however, the doorknob turned, and the door flew open to reveal a pair of beaten and dirty brown-haired youths in armor that resembled steelwork done by master craftsmen of the ogre homeland. Which is to say, their armor was cobbled together and barely hanging onto their bodies at this point.
“Ah, dammit,” one of them said.

“It’ll take more than curses to drive me away,” the Baron replied menacingly. “Now*you two look familiar. Just who the hell are you? Answer carefully, because I’ll kill you if I find your reply…lacking.”

Myra was almost enchanted by the odd fire engulfing her partner and basking the arcane chamber in a greenish otherworldly hue. Shadows flickered sinisterly on the walls. Some took on the form of what could have been horned bats, while others, humanoid shapes of impossible proportions. Others were vague and indescribable at all, making her wonder if her mind was just playing tricks on her. Nevertheless, a feeling of dread seemed to coat the room as the Spider’s cries of anguish grew deeper and more guttural.

Surok smirked at the young girl who looked like she was one of the desertfolk of the south. “I suppose this wasn’t part of any escape plans?” he asked mockingly.

“I..uh..no, this wasn’t me!” the girl stammered. “I tried using a simple binding hex!”

The Spider’s form grew bulkier and somewhat taller. “Grah’knal itzzu,” he rasped with an inhuman voice. “Korh’lahn xxil.”

“No, I don’t think I will,” Surok said. “I’d rather keep you here until we know what we’re dealing with.”

Myra felt she heard enough, but did*’t have time to react thanks to a chill seemingly locking her bones in place. The two mages must’ve felt it too, because Surok wore a look of apprehension on his aging face while the girl was barely holding in sounds of panic.

“This…isn’t…your…doing…either,” Surok managed through chattering teeth as the cold grew more powerful.

“Nope.”

The Spider made a sound that must’ve been laughing, because soon enough the fire engulfing him faded to mere embers, and he began to move freely, albeit slowly. It was hard to tell if it was intentional or because he truly was hurt by the magical fire.

Surok growled something in the arcane tongue, and a pentacle etched into the floor began to glow. Warmth flooded the room, but it was barely enough to free the inhabitants of the chamber from the frosty shackles of…whatever held them in place temporarily.

On the other hand, the glow of the pentacle also seemed to invigorate the seemingly possessed Spider. It also cast two human-sized shadows in the form of some sort of dog, which stayed the same shape no matter how anyone looked at the things. Myra began to inch her way out of the room when the shadow things started circling the general area where the Spider and two mages were standing, but a strong set of hands grabbed her shoulders and cut those plans short.

*It’s ‘bout time we found ye,” she heard her former dwarf captor whisper harshly in her ear.

The dog-shadows began growing more and more solid as they neared the Spider, and the desert girl shot small darts of bluish-green energy at them, causing yips of annoyance to float throughout the room.

For his part, Surok barked a single word that caused the pentacle to flare up in a fiery inferno, revealing not only two well-build mastiffs, but a lithe and rather plain looking woman holding what appeared to be a single leash which were not only attached to the dogs, but also of made entirely of shadows, in her hands. Likewise, Myra noted that the shadows themselves seemed to crawl over her skin despite the positioning of the light which was trying to drive them away.

Surok clasped his hands together. “Mori,” he said, nodding toward the girl. “Grazj,” he spat, nodding in Myra’s general direction. Despite her struggles, the dwarf had a firm grip on her, and it was enough for him to simply walk her in the direction he wanted in order for her to follow his lead.

“Jirah’ gaz,” the Spider growled at the newcomers. Apparently their appearance had taken him…it…aback, for the possessed man was looking back and forth between the two in confusion.

The woman nodded at the dogs, who snarled on her signal. “Surok, what’s going on here?” she asked nonchalantly.

“I thought a magical experiment would’ve been obvious to a practitioner of the arts,” he replied sarcastically.

“So tha’s me prisoner’s ‘ere then, right?” Myra heard Grazj ask.

“They’re actually intruders, but they suit my purposes just as well,” Surok replied. “Now, I must ask you to leave. I have no wish for a confrontation at this stage of the ritual, and quite frankly, I doubt the Gentleman would approve if my attempt to enter the Fade Realm for negotiations with potential allies was nullified by his own subordinates.”

“We weren’t aware that he had authorized such rituals,” Mori said.

“He also keeps the existence of the goddamn Vanguards hidden from all but a few,” Surok retorted indignantly. “Now, if you insist on wasting more of my time than you already have, be warned that I still need sacrificial subjects if these don’t turn out well. I’m sure your boss would understand if I culled the idiots from his own congregation, so to speak.”

“Ye wouldn’ dare,” Grazj said, tightening his grip on Myra.

Surok did*’t reply. Instead, he made a motion with his hand that caused a bright burst of light to fill the room, causing the dogs to bark out of agitation, and the two newcomers to scream and cover their eyes. Luckily for Myra, she managed to avert her eyes before the blast, and used the temporary distraction to twist around and bring the dwarf with a single kick to the groin.

Free of the dwarf at last, Myra looked to the floor in search of something to defend herself with. If her mace hadn’t been lost since her capture, she wouldn’t have hesitated to use it, but she did spy a few ceremonial blades on a nearby shelf. Now her only problem was getting to them without being blasted to pieces or chewed up by the mastiffs. To that end, she decided to stick close to the walls and work her way around the steadily growing magical brawl.

The dogs were the first to attack. Snarling, they leapt at the Spider, who only swatted the both of them away with one arm. His rather tattered cape had begun to split into two, and makeshift wings snapped at the ground to create a small gust of wind that blinded the shadow animals. In the meantime, Grazj managed to push himself onto his elbows, and through watering eyes he grumbled something that caused the earth itself to warp around the stone floor and become a hand that slapped at the desert girl.

To her credit, she managed to counter the attack with a short burst of water, followed by a spell that made some sort of vine grow from the now muddy and sagging earth. The vines turned and reeled on the dwarf, slowly but surely tightening the more he struggled to escape their natural grasp.

Mori had recovered from Surok’s attack in time to see Myra moving around the edges of the room. The mage dropped the leash long enough to make mystic motions with her hands, but Myra, deciding that the blades wouldn’t mean much if she was plastered against the wall by whatever the mage was about to do, ran towards the mage and threw a punch aimed squarely at her jaw. The mage stopped her spell, causing magic to fizzle in the air, and stepped back enough so the agent missed. But it wasn’t far back enough to the point where she couldn’t counter with a quick swipe of her own hand.
