You can disable the authenticator via email? That kind of defeats the purpose of it.

Which is why they suggest you also use 2-step authentication on your email as well.
A lot of people seem to be reading the first page, then skipping to the end and jumping to conclusions instead of being intelligent enough to read the thread or FAQ for the answers to their questions. Smarten up folks.

I'm angry, I can't afford a smart phone.

So this new security system is only for the rich kids?

Well that's certainly not fair.

Get a job and stop whining noob. This update is certainly not only for rich kids, it is for people who have some degree of responsibility in their lives and don't complain because they don't have nice things, because they work for it. Obviously your parents give you all your crap.

@Mod Ash
With this update, does this effect VPN users? Say if a VPN set it up, They can still Login normally right? or would need code?

I'll have to leave this question for someone who's actually worked on the update. :)

This shouldn't have any effect on you because you use a VPN. The app generates a code based off of a shared key which is probably agreed upon by your phone and the jagex server. The phone and server synch with eachother, share a key, generate a code, and you enter it on your pc. This process shouldn't be affected by your VPN..

Ok, so i have set up this authenticator security thing on my jagex account, through the RS3 homepage, i read that it also protects my account through oldschool runescape, so does that mean i have to set it up again on the oldschool website, or is it automatically protected, since it's been set on my jagex account?

It surprises me that, with email providers providing two-step authentication (bot via text and random number generation) that some people still chose to either not use the two-factor service, or not use an email provider that does.

Personally, protecting my emails is number 1 on the security priority list. Having my bank, insurances, gaming accounts and family linked to my email address, it makes sense to secure it to the highest grade. Having my email two-step verified immediately makes it almost impossible for my RS account to be hijacked with or without my account having appropriate security defences. Of course, having standard security awareness online also limits those chances.

I did read it, and I do have the protection for my email. But if someone gets into your email, they can disable the verification, therefore defeating the purpose of it. And obviously a huge chunk of people who play OS don't have it on their email.

But if your account gets recovered by a hijacker, their e-mail will be registered on the account.. Right?
I think lot's of people get hacked by recovery.

Nice now people can't get hijacked from the YouTube video scam. Even though it's quite obvious they are redirecting to fake sites. Remember never login to forums explicitly went to the site yourself without a link.
