To give you a little history, the reason Old School was requested at all was to give people back the game they once loved. There was a private server in the process titled "RS 2006" that was going to be a reincarnation of Runescape 2 dating to around early-mid 2006. Sadly in January of last year the server was shut down by Jagex, letting down our hopes for another RS2 game. In the process, little did people know Jagex was in the works for an "old school" game, which would lead into the vote count.
Now originally, several people, including myself, wanted a 2006 version of the game because we felt that it was one of the best years for Runescape, a time when more people played for the enjoyment. Unfortunately August 2007 (just before the release of GWD) was the oldest backup Jagex could find and it was something we had to accept. By the beginning of March 2013 the vote count had ended, resulting in some 450,000+ votes, not quite enough to reach the 500,000 threshold. 750,000 votes would of guaranteed a permanent Free to Play option, something I would of liked to see, if only gold farmers and bots hadn't took over in the main game.
It's been apparent from the start that trading in Varrock West is indeed a major issue. But I find it completely unnecessary to offer a "solution" in the midst of giving people wishing to play for free a chance. It upsets me that Jagex is speeding along in their development blogs the instant an update comes out as if it didn't really matter to them. Auction Houses have worked in other MMORPGs. Jagex is taking a huge risk with this, and with the upcoming Legacy Mode coming out for EOC, this could mean trouble for Old School. Then again, people are going to have mixed feelings on this trading solution. I for one find it completely unnecessary, and I think Jagex needs to expand upon what a certain third party website has already given us without messing up a core value in the gameplay.
