You're saying this as if profit is everything, which is clearly the thought process of Jagex (and will inevitably be the downfall of the game). The game survived (and made huge amounts of money) for 8+ years without having micro-transactions/high membership fees. Plus, it had a strong free to play base.
Why? Because the previous owners didn't make their decisions purely based on profit. Everyone understands you need to make money from the game otherwise there would have been no point of the purchase in 2010, however having every decision focused around it will only make the company and the game suffer in the long run.
I understand as developers you are dealing with the board and it has probably been extremely difficult for you to even negotiate 2 weeks of free membership, but unless it is going to be offered long-term, do not expect this venture to improve anything.
It's all well and good listening to your players but if the company's ethos isn't changed to a system where quality updates matter and decisions are not based purely on profit, Oldschool will not last.
