Can't say I understand the need for any of this myself. The notion that we -need- upgraded and better equipment all the time is not one I see working long term. Where does it stop? Like EoC did?
Seems to me that 'adding new equipment and bosses' has become the go-to strategy for keeping players interested in just about all games. Make the hits huge and intimidating, make the army shiny and godlike. Make big, powerful bosses to fill a player with a sense of accomplishment.
Fine if that's the strategy that's being adopted, go for it. But what about in a year, when people are 'bored' of the Corporeal Beast / spirit shields and are clamoring for something new. You have to keep upgrading over and over to accommodate that style of thinking, and you then risk alienating and dissuading newer players, or those that are not so interested in such things. You end up with a bunch of dead content nobody uses or cares about anymore. That's the point when a game truly stagnates, because it lacks fresh blood and those that remain are simply awaiting the next big thing.
