Jagex said there was no damage to the economy, which they always say. And isn't there a limit to the amount of items a player can buy on a sale?

Today's update to the newspost states 61 players are being banned for 14 days, and having their gains of over 20M XP rolled back - but there was no damage to the economy. Like I said before, the economy need not have been affected to affect the game. It was XP these players were after. At least Jagex is wiping away those gains.

As for the item limits, Jagex did update the Oddments Store on 7 May 2020 so that players could only buy medium lamps or stars ten times a day (separate counters for each). However, that limit was quietly removed four days later.

After today's updated newspost, I wouldn't be surprised if Jagex announces new limits on buying lamps, stars, and TH keys. If not new limits, at least better-defined limits.

So people that already had oddment prior to this promotion could have used all there oddments to buy TH keys with no problems?? They wouldn't have got banned??

P.S: I didn't know you could buy TH keys with oddments :O I'm behind the times :O With over 100k oddments in the bank I could have cleaned up TH :P

It depends. Since you accumulated those oddments over time, not by taking advantage of this exploit as others did, you might have been ok. However, if you had used your oddments to buy hundreds and hundreds of TH keys, used them to acquire enough lamps to gain a huge amount of XP, there's a good chance your account would've been flagged for further investigation, at least. You might have even gotten a temp ban while Jagex conducted their investigation. Maybe they might have determined you didn't cheat, but just took advantage of your stockpile of oddments to make good use of them. On the other hand, they might have just seen you had gained over 20M XP instantly, figured that can't be legit, banned you for 2 weeks, and rolled back your XP gains - as they did to 61 players they felt exploited this situation the most.

A player buys several TH keys at an oddment discount, wins a large amount of oddments after cashing out a few good prizes, and uses those oddments to buy more TH keys at a discount. They repeat the process until they amass a huge amount of oddments.

This is not an exploit at all because Jagex intends to give us Oddments every day just by logging, and more for playing the game. It is their intention to let us accumulate oddments through. There is no expliots because we are not gaining any advantages over anybody by doing things Jagex does intend us to.

Ok, I asked this question above.

I have collected over 100k oddments since oddments came out - If I knew about this TH thing and spent all my 100k oddments on TH tickets (I think this is what the abuse is??) would I have been one of the persons who got banned??

I believe Jagex's announcement made it pretty clear already. They set a threshold on what they considered exploits. That said, they banned only 900 of the 4k or only 22% the players they investigated.

The abuse was not on exchanging oddments for TH keys but on the intention and actual actions the players did in that period. Of course, if these players used mechanical device to aid their actions, they are going to be banned for more days.

The abuse was gaining over 20M XP from exchanging oddments for TH keys, at a discount.

Jagex is going to put daily buy limites on Oddments Store items. It will stop this kind of exploits once and for all. :)

Hold on to that dream with both hands.

Item limits were placed on the Oddments Store on 7 May 2020.

Four days later, those limits were removed.

Maybe this time they'll mean it. I hope so, but I guess time will tell.

This is not what Dong U Dead asked. He asked if accumulating oddments from playing the game for a long time has anything to do with the abuse.

These people got their transactions rolled back too, regardless how they obtained the oddments and for how long they have played for them.

The limits were not set on TH keys. Now they added the limits to TH keys and probably other items in the Oddments Store too.

I know that. She asked if she might have been banned if she'd spent her oddments on a lot of TH keys as the exploiters did. I said "It depends." If she got 20M in XP, she might have been flagged unfairly.

Original message details are unavailable.

Dong wouldn't want to be banned or rolled back by mistake. Who would?

Of course they weren't. As I posted in another thread, the limits were placed on medium lamps and stars - for four days.

They're suspending the discounts on TH keys, at least for now. They may well add other limits to the Oddments Store. Good. That's something they should've done in the first place.

They never said anything about discounts on TH keys. We'll see next time when the promotion on discounted Oddments Store TH keys runs again. The key point is they are already doing a buy limit on TH keys so regardless of how big the discount of TH keys in the future, players can't abuse it.

You're probably going to have to wait for a long time because...
"Whilst we hotfixed the solution at around 19:10 BST on Monday 24th August, we have also disabled discounts on Treasure Hunter keys in the Oddments Store for the foreseeable future."

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
