Brother

I remember my first love, long ago. The very thought of him, the very thought of the passion I held for him, is enough to overwhelm me at times. He was the focus of my entire world; he was my master, my brother, and my love. I sometimes wonder still, looking back on those ancient times, what we would have been had it not been for that faithful night. That night when my beloved Zaros left me.

When Mother Mah grew weary of playing with new creations, she enjoyed a deep slumber. As her children and protectors, Zaros and I slept in the Cradle near her whenever she decided it was time to rest. From time to time, I would put all my energy into pulling myself away from the sleeping form of Zaros so that I could ensure that Mah was sleeping soundly.

On that night, after I checked on Mah, I returned to where I had been sleeping and caught Zaros trying to sneak away from the Cradle.

"Brother, where are you going?" I asked.

"I needed a clear head to think, Seren," he replied, refusing to even look at me.

"About what?"

"I think it is time for us to leave this place, to start on a journey," Zaros's voice wavered, uncomfortable with the words.

"And what of Mother?"

"I am tired of being her doll; I want more out of life! Don't you? Don't you want to start a new life together somewhere, where we can be free to explore and learn?"

"It would be nice, to explore the realms with you. But we cannot leave Mah. She needs us," I argued.

"We are her prisoners, and now is our chance to escape!"

"We are her children, her creations!" I exclaimed. "Please, Zaros, we mustn't leave."

"I will not force you to leave her side. But I am going."

I tried to step forward to stop him, but he stepped back. "If you love me, you will not try to stop me from leaving."

"And if you love me, you will stay."

"I do love you; I adore you. But this is something I have to do," he said.

"I want to go with you, but I must stay here for her," I cried.

"I know. That's why I love you, Seren. I love your compassion, your heart," Zaros whispered. "Someday, we will be together again. We will be a family. I promise."

I smiled, trying to put on a brave face for him. "As much as I hate that you are leaving, I am relieved by that vow. If you must go, then go. I will remember you in my heart forever, my love."

After this, Zaros left the Cradle and began his journey. As he left our world, Mah woke up and was troubled to find that one of her dolls was gone. The absence of Zaros troubled her greatly, ravaged the little mental capacity she had, and she fell into a great depression. For many years she grew worse and worse, throwing tantrums and creating monsters to try to replace Zaros. They were of dark energy, like him, but I did not love them as I loved him.

Finally, she fell into a deep slumber, practically a coma. It was then that I realized that I had to leave, that it was no longer necessary for me to comfort one who had lost itself to despair after being abandoned. I left Freneskae and found a new home with the elves. For the first time since Zaros left me, I felt love.

It was different. Not only did I love them, but they loved me back. I wasn't just a burden to them, as I felt I was to Zaros. I was happy to serve as their mother goddess, as nurturing and caring to them as I had been to Mah. For the first time, I felt free. It was glorious!

One day, a younger god named Guthix came to our land. He had a wise, pained spirit about him that reminded me of Zaros and, again, I felt new love. He took me and my people to new lands, let us see wonders, and brought us to the perfect world of Gielinor. We never spoke of our pasts, except he mentioned he once had a daughter and I mentioned that I had a brother.

We lived happily in Gielinor for centuries with our people, until Guthix had to rest. Though I was sad, I lived on with the elves knowing he would return to me someday.

For years after Guthix began his slumber, I was content. My new home was prosperous and my people loved me as much as I loved them. Everything changed, however, when I felt a presence that I had not felt in eons. I realized that Zaros had come to Gielinor. After so long, he was finally coming back to me. I thought I would be happy by this, but in truth I felt strange.

I was bitter that Zaros had left me, even though I told him it was fine. I felt like I had been abandoned, cast aside as inconvenient. After knowing what true love was like from Guthix and the elves, I could not help but feel anger when I thought of Zaros. When I kept hearing that he was building and growing an empire that spanned across the rest of the world, I was terrified.

One day, well into this era that would be known as the Second Age, Zaros appeared in my home. He was wearing battle armor, but he cast it off when he confirmed that we were alone. I saw that old smile on his face and I felt the warmth in my heart, the pure devotion towards him, that just being in his presence made me feel.

"It's been so long, Seren," Zaros whispered, wrapping his arms around me.

"Why are you doing all this, Zaros? Why are you building an empire? Why are you here now? Why did you never come back for me?" I said, yelling the last question with anger.

"The sisters of Mah will someday destroy this world as they destroyed Freneskae long ago. I discovered this and put a plan into motion to stop it. That's why I never returned, that's why I built an empire of followers; I wanted to get the aid of the younger gods. When I learned you were here, I rejoiced. I wanted to see you."

"It was so painful when you left..."

"I'm here now, Seren. I love you."

"I love another."

"I am happy. You deserve a better love than me. I am your brother, I shall be the brother of your love as well. But now, Seren, you must come with me."

"I... I can't! I can't leave my people. I can't abandon them," I answered.

Zaros sighed. "I know. That is why I will always love you, remember? It is fine if you don't wish to help me, I understand. But can I do something to help you?"

"I want you to promise me that your empire will never invade my lands or harm my people. Promise me that you will never hurt my love, Guthix. Promise me that you'll see me again."

Zaros assented to all of these things. "My empire runs smoothly and I have time before I must complete my task. Give me a few days as I put my affairs in order with Legatus Maximus Zamorak. Then, I shall be at your side and help your people for years to come."

I was so happy to hear this news, which allowed me to feel some of my old feelings for Zaros. With renewed devotion to him, second only to the devotion I had for my people, I told him farewell and awaited his return anxiously.

I was horrified and dismayed to discover that he had been killed by the traitorous Zamorak. I mourned for centuries, with my people as comfort as they kept invaders at bay. When the terrible war caused by the traitor reached its conclusion, I was saddened at the destruction but I rejoiced at Guthix's return.

I told him of Zaros, and my relationship with him. In response, Guthix said, "No matter if he is living or dead, Zaros will always remain in your heart. We must now honor him, by fulfilling his wishes. I must expel all of the gods out of Gielinor, so that their destruction will not awaken the Elders. I hate to ask this of you, but you must stay in slumber with me if you want to remain in Gielinor."

I could not leave my people, as tempting as the offer was. I returned home under the guise of saying goodbye. I had to protect my people, so I gave my body to them.

----

I will die today. Maybe I was wrong; maybe I'll get an afterlife. With Seren and her family...

---

I returned for her, but we cannot reunite...

Glad to see this thread is still alive :D

And Lego, if you want to add more entries to the "Personal Recommendations" list, I would suggest making a new post for your short story on Page 1 Post 3, and replacing that section with the new story recommendations.
I'm too Unaligned to have a forum signature.

As the crystalline Shard of Zaros slid into the center of the Memoriam device, the pillars comprising the ground of the area rose as one. As they slid back down, Zaros was there.

“You have questions.” His voice reverberated through the chamber, the metallic mouth on his robe’s collar stretching and bending to speak the words.

The World Guardian held up a small key with a golden, club-shaped handle. Taking the key in his gauntlet, Zaros makes a noise as if pondering something.

“Interesting. It’s freezing cold to the touch. Ordinarily that wouldn’t be worthy of note, but this energy within it…”

He looks up at the World Guardian, inquisitive.

“It isn’t an Elder artifact, but an item forged by mortal hands utilizing the power of an elder god. I’d suspect Wen, given the feel of the energy. How did you come by such a tool?”

“It was left to a silversmith by his ancestor, with only a handful of notes explaining its use. Its temperature changes based on how close it is to a point of interest, be it a treasure chest or a location with an important history behind it.” The World Guardian said, a knowing grin on his face.

“I surmise from the expression you have that the key possesses far greater powers than simple proximity detection. I doubt the energy of an elder god would result only in such a minor enchantment.”

The World Guardian’s grin widened. “First, another question.”

“How would you like to meet Guthix?”

Taking the first steps into Guthix’s resting place, Zaros looked about the room, inspecting the murals on the wall and the ruins of what had once been furniture. Vines hung from the walls and slithered through the thick grass below.

“You still have not explained to me what you mean by meeting Guthix. “ Zaros was visibly impatient. “We have limited time as it is to accomplish our goal and save Gielinor, and tarrying for something absurd will not increase it.”

The World Guardian spin around and abruptly grasped Zaros’ hand. The god noticed the key in the guardian’s hand, and it felt burning hot against his gauntlet. The World Guardian’s other hand ran over the tip of the key, and he spoke two words that Zaros couldn’t identify, but were similar to Infernal tongue.

“Predem Abducto.”

Glowing rings of light encircled them both, and the two disappeared.

It was stressful being a god. Mortals looked to you for guidance and knowledge, even if you did*’t possess it yourself. Those were the thoughts of Guthix as he sat with Seren on the bed that was in his resting place. While a god did*’t need a bed to sleep per say, one could just power themselves down into unconsciousness, it was nice to have reminders that everyone was once mortal.

Guthix idly wondered, staring into the smiling face of Seren, if she felt the same way. Even in the dim light, every ray that touched her crystalline body seemed to be magnified one hundred fold, illuminating the room, both with light and with her otherworldly beauty. Through the centuries, he still was awestruck by her, even though they had forged such a close friendship with each other.

Seeing this woman, being with this woman, made him feel elated and guilty at the same time. Elated because of how much he had grown to like her, in the centuries they had spent guiding and aiding their people, yet guilty because her motherly demeanor reminded her so much of the wife and daughter that he had lost.

While he tried to think of something to break the silence that in his opinion had gone on for a bit too long, she spoke first. “Our people need us. They need protection, and they need love. We, who have inordinate power over them, it is our responsibility to use that power correctly. Don’t you agree?”

Guthix pondered her statement for several seconds, before responding. “But we can’t do everything for them. At some point, we have to let our children grow up, and they need to be able to live on their own.”

Our children?” Seren asked, a knowing smile on her face, and when her eight eyes stared lovingly into his two, Guthix found that all of his doubts melted away. Everything he wanted to say he couldn't find the words for, so instead, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.

Naturally, it was to this scene that Zaros and the World Guardian arrived.

Seren rapidly pulled away from the kiss upon seeing her opposite arrive with the unfamiliar human. “Brother, what are you doing here? I haven’t seen you since you left Mah and I.”

“Brother?” Guthix spoke incredulously.

Zaros, instead of answering, angrily turned to the World Guardian. “What trickery is this? You mock me with these illusions? Is this another of Sliske’s ‘games’?”

“No tricks,” the Guardian spoke. “This is the first age, and they are Seren and Guthix, although I admit not to have planned our unfortunate timing.”

“Incredible. To think that something that isn’t an Artifact could have such power. So, this is the famous Guthix and my ‘sister’ as it were.” Zaros said. “It’s good to meet the one whose teachings are spoken so highly of.”

“I would say the same, but I don’t remember us being introduced.” Guthix was noticeably cautious of the new god, both from unfamiliarity and the imposing appearance of him.

“Apologies.” Zaros began, “My name is Zaros, the opposite counterpart to Seren. Due to the nature of our… youths, she came to refer to me as a sibling, although I disavow such a relationship for reasons that I do not care to disclose.”

Soon, despite Guthix’s reluctance, the two were discussing a variety of topics, from worlds that they visited to their philosophies. The latter became more heated than the former, and hypotheticals that sometimes weren’t were thrown around with the same ease as underhanded accusations or tyranny or inaction.

Then, Seren laughed. “It’s nice to see that Zaros is having such a good time here on this world. It’s much better than the sullen Zaros who raged against Mah’s control back at our home world.”

“…” Zaros turned his head to the side, grunting.

When he turned back, he looked between Guthix and Seren. “I need to speak with each of you in private. I have little time until our curse acts up, and must leave soon. Seren, if you will.”
