I would like to dedicate this thread to Mod John A, an absolutely brilliant content developer who created, amongst many other pieces of great content, the Dorgeshuun quest series, Shadow of the Storm, the latter half of the Rise of the Red Axe series and the Ariane quests (for a full list see "Content Developers" on the unofficial wiki). With the release of his final project - Plague's End - and the Birthright of the Dwarves post-quest dialogue, he left Jagex after nearly ten years to pursue a career as an author in Canada. John, I wish you the best of luck and I look forward to reading your first novel - thank you for everything.

Welcome, welcome, to what is probably the largest lore thread made so far!

As you may have guessed, this thread isn't about quests or Saranthium's demise - it doesn't theorise, hypothesise or discuss anything at all. Thou art reading, in fact, a directory, or lexicon if you want, of all the 'obscure' lore in the world. Those small things that you may not remember, or may never have known at all. Who's Keorgius? What's Humblethorn? Where's the Chamber of Invention?

But wait - there's more! Initially, I was only going to do obscure lore only, but that soon resulted in an utter mess with little cohesion. Therefore I've ended up with a sort of compromise, documenting even the most obvious pieces of lore but all rather briefly. So this can be seen as a guide to all lore, but without specific details or character histories. Most importantly however, I've tried to list those obscure things that may have been mentioned just once in some quest we all did eight years ago, or hinted at in an old Postbag or God Letter, that sort of thing. Feel free to suggest the addition of a subject you may want to see here.

The original incarnation of this thread was originally created by the glorious
Robo Hobo
, but, in a nutshell, he is a busy chap and the thread would remain unupdated and incomplete. It did prove popular however, which is why he decided to pass it on to me. I gladly accepted the honour, not least because I had holiday at the time.

The table of contents below may help in finding anything you're looking for if you can't be bothered to browse the entire thread. It even links to the posts!

NOTE: For convenience's sake, the sources (which'd be >10 pages and a massive amount of work) haven't been listed. Feel free to ask for one any time though!

1) TIME
¤
This chapter is about everything related to time and how it is organised.

1.1) Calendar
¤
It presumably takes Gielinor and its moon Zanaris approximately 365.25 days to fully rotate around its star. This is known as a year, which, in turn is divided into ten months, each consisting of a number of days, seven of which make one week. At least, that would match how the solar calendar works on Earth. Every four years, one of the months, Moevyng, has an extra day added around the middle of the month. Dates are usually noted as <[day] [month] [age].[year]>. For example, Fritz the experiment was slain on 15 Pentember 5.169.

A year has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. They flow into each other and the Queens of Snow and Sunrise are responsible for the passing of the seasons by literally handing one another the year at festive ceremonies.

1.1.1) Months of the Year
¤
The apprentice of the famous astronomer Scorpius first began working on the calendar. According to Varrock Palace's librarian Reldo Trimmly: Early entries in Phyrrys 's diary tell of how he was attempting to figure out the RuneScape Calendar, based upon the astronomical studies his mentor was conducting. However, a few pages have survived of Scorpius's own diary, heavily hinting at Phyrrys's ineptitude, and how at the culmination of the apprentice's initial calendar research, he'd failed to account for a whole forty days. This is backed up in Phyrrys's own diary entries, whereby from this date on, his anger (ire) seemed to grow and grow at his inability to work these forty days into the calendar. It is assumed that a later inhabitant of the Observatory found these notes and, quite easily, corrected the mistake by placing them between Septober and Novtumber, naming the month in honour (or more likely in jest) of the 'challenged' Phyrrys.

The months of the year are:

Rint{r)a (39 days)
Moevyng (38.25 days)
Bennath (32 days)
Raktuber (34 days)
Pent[o]ber (38 days)
Fentuary (31 days)
Septober (38 days)
Ire of Phyrrys (40 days)
Novtumber (39 days)
Wintumber (36 days)

1.1.2) Days of the Week
¤
The days of the week are part of the old Saradominist calendar and appropriately named after the Seven Priestly Warriors who fought in the Misthalin - Morytania War. They are equivalent to the days of the week on Earth.

Ivanday (Ivandis Seergaze)
Caistleday (Iriandul Caistlyn)
Duneday (Sarl Dunegun)
Gullday (Derygull Templeton)
Erysail (Erysail the Pious)
Twiblick (Friar Twiblick)
Essianday (Essiandar Gar)

1.2) Ages
¤
The history of Gielinor has been divided into dinstict ages by humans, with the sixth having just begun. Listed here are the six ages, with some of the most notable events. Other races may use their own calendars - for example the dwarves have an Age of Kings and a Golden Age, and gnomes have their own calendar too.

For a more thorough yet still brief account of history, please refer to the Fussy-written History article on the unofficial wiki.

1.2.1) First Age
¤
The First Age is the official start of Gielinorian history. It began when the just ascended god Guthix found the planet and used Elder Artefacts to shape it to his liking before introducing races to inhabit it using the World Gate. It ended approximately 4,000 years later when Guthix retreated into the earth to slumber, leaving the mortals to take care of themselves. There were few inhabitants of Gielinor in the First Age, leaving details unavailable. The present races did not interact often.
