What was the artefact that was brought aboard the ship?

I know this very unlikely, but an artefact that can "sing" makes me think of the Horn, elder artefact. We have no reason to believe before now that it is sentient [the werewolf says the artefact crawled overboard when not being watched], but maybe the story was exaggerated and it was actually in one of the crewmember's possession. [Sliske even mentions his lack of confidence in the truth of the werewolf's claims.]

Maybe the Horn can also grow connected to a being the longer they are exposed to one another, allowing the individual remote control over the Horn.

Also, singing could be related to the seasingers, though I don't know how it could be related to the incident.

So this has probably already been said, but given that Xau-Tak apparently has tentacles and is associated with the sea and mind control, I'm wondering if it could be the creator of the sea slugs. Could be used as an "Author's Saving Throw" (to pinch a TVTropes term) for how lackluster that arc ended up being.

Awhile back Mod Jack suggested that the Sea Slugs are cthonians. While obviously not canon, remember that Mod Wilson has been writing this since 2005. Seeing as Mod Jack made his comment a lot more recent than 2005, it's almost certain that the sea slugs do not have a connection to Xua-Tak. Still that doesn't mean they can't in the future, but I feel like if they did it would be shoe-horned in purely to have one creepy sea race be related to other creepy sea stuff. So i kinda hope you're wrong :P , sorry lol.

Hey there. Much as I enjoyed seeing this thread pop up I'd like to confirm something; the mysterious voice in that cutscene is NOT Xau-Tak. Its words carry significantly more weight. ;)

...No, literally**********; If Sliske comprehended the meaning behind the Black Howling of Xau-Tak then the parts of his brain responsible for processing languages and memory would gain enough gravity that his head would compact to the size of a child’* fist.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get back to speculating.

What do you think happened to the Mos Le Harmless civilization? Did Xau-Tak itself destroy it, or some other force? What was the artefact that was brought aboard the ship?

My best guess would be the skull from the Rag and Bone man quest.

Well, the skull does have a history of scaring sailors, so it's certainly possible. You never were our brightest star, Khazard. 'Vermin slaughtered like lambs'? What does that even mean?

The skull by itself couldn't possibly have the power to destroy an entire civilization, no matter how small or primitive it may be. I believe they found an Elder Artifact or some font of power belonging to Xau-Tak.

This might be completely irrelevant, but Top Trumps list The Skeletal Horror, something a lot of you connet to Xau-Tak, age as 5 years. -
I have noticed your kind does tend to blindly stumble forward towards danger simply because it exists. What is your word for that?
- We call it being a hero.

Well that's technically true. It's the 4 year of the 6th age, and if you add the last year of the 5th age when we built the damn thing you get 5 years.

I'm wondering if Xau-Tak might be to Guthix what the Dark Lord was to Seren; a part of Guthix's personality that he didn't like and so split off into a separate being.

For almost as long as I've been playing the game I've wondered if maybe there was a god of
im
balance lurking out there in RuneScape as well, since Guthix is the god of balance.

When you think about it, everything Xau-Tak stands for is pretty much diametrically opposed to what Guthix represented. Guthix was described as the god of balance and nature, whereas Xau-Tak seems to be identified with unnatural horrors and cities with bizarre out-of-balance proportions. Xau-Tak is also identified with undeath, which is unnatural and causes imbalance (if Death is a Guthixian, then undeath would be quite the opposite: a Xautakian!)

It certainly seems possible that Guthix would have developed a fascination with unnatural, unbalanced horrors and felt the need to control those urges by casting them out. Perhaps he even got the idea from Seren (or vice versa), given that they were close friends.

Xau-Tak being an aberrant shard of Guthix would also explain why Xau-Tak was seemingly unaffected by the Edicts.

The real question is how the death of Guthix would have affected a separated shard. Perhaps Guthix's death actually made Xau-Tak more powerful, since now Xau-Tak is the only part of Guthix left. Sort of like when you have two balloons connected together and you squeeze all the air out of one, the other one will get bigger.
Are you ready to enter the Mind of Rutha?

@Bonzara
Retreading the Seren/Dark Lord spiel with an anti-Guthix would be catastrophically tedious. Hell, they didn't even manage to make it interesting with Seren in my opinion.

Besides, Guthix is a dead horse. Far better for Xau-Tak to be something new (and hopefully interesting).
Patrolling Lore FC almost makes you wish for a Great Revision.
