In some other MMOs like D&D

To be fair, there is a D&D MMO out there somewhere. It's not very popular afaik, but he wasn't totally wrong :P

Either way, I always thought Sorcery/Sorcerers were just a subset of mages that weren't 'official' wizards from the Mage's Guild or Wizard's Tower. But Thormac can also be reached through a portal from the magic guild so maybe the whole distinction is based off of something else entirely >.<

My thought is that Sorceror and Mage are synonyms. "Wizard" just refers to mages who are part of an organisation (IE the Wizard's Tower). You never were our brightest star, Khazard. 'Vermin slaughtered like lambs'? What does that even mean?

Nah, I doubt there is a 'defined' difference. As has already been stated the words wizard/witch/warlock/sorcerer/mystic are all used interchangeably. You do sense a faint distinction between the different names, for example: when you think of a witch it brings to mind potionmaking/cats/broomsticks, whereas sorcerer sounds a little more menacing and powerful, etc.

I wouldn't be against categorizing the different types of magic users but frankly we are not left much wiggle room.

I don't think you could do much more than draw lines at:

Powerful>MorePowerful
Innate>Learned
Runes>NoRunes
Mysterious>Normal

I don't think it's ever been defined in game, but my general understanding is:

Wizard - A member of a wizard group, with a ranking system (like Archmage, Initiate etc). In game, this is the Wizard's Guild.
Mage - A person who utilises magic in combat. Like the player.
Sorcerer - A lone person who has a great magical understanding, often skill based rather than combat (though not always). Often mistrusted by wizards, and portrayed (sometimes rightly) as "evil".
Witch/Warlock - A lone person with a low/moderate understanding of magic. Essentially, a low end sorcerer.
Mystic - A highly specialised wizard or sorcerer, specialising around a specific element.
[Topic]Mancer - Much like a mystic, however they specialise in a topic, rather than an element. Like Necromancer specialises in dealing with the dead/undead.

I wouldn't take my understanding as gospel, but it's built up from what I've seen in game, plus outside knowledge of other fantasy genres.
Of course, it's also subjective to the player/NPC's view of the person in question.
If you only do what you can do, you will never be more than you are now.

Dont forget that some NPCs might use the terms Sorcerer and Wizard incorrectly or inconsistantly. Especially non-magic users might call an act of wizardry as 'sorcery'. If there is a difference at all

It's possible that wizardry is an art that was designed for safer use in comparison to sorcery, which seems stronger and more risky to use. We never heard of dark wizardry being used (although there are dark wizards, but these seem rather weak compared to other dark magic users), and it seems that while wizardry gears towards basics, sorcery can be adapted into more fields, such as summoning, teleportation, enchantments, or other fields of magic that a sorceror can specialise in, instead of spreading their skills around all areas like a wizard might. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

I've always thought "sorcery" was a term used for "magic that I don't understand." A
World Guardian
must learn to find
Balance
in themselves.
Only then can they
Control
themselves and forge their own
Fate .

This is not a gravebump!

~~~~
I just saw a post on Facebook from a D&D group (judge my life) that described a Warlock as someone who's magic comes from a higher power, Sorcerer's magic is innate, and Wizards magic comes from books and learning... Bards get their magic from sick guitar skills.
