I just saw a post on Facebook from a D&D group (judge my life) that described a Warlock as someone who's magic comes from a higher power, Sorcerer's magic is innate, and Wizards magic comes from books and learning... Bards get their magic from sick guitar skills.

1. This is definitely a gravebump.
2. D&D =/= Runescape
3. How can a Sorcerer's magic be innate when Wizards are "innate" too?

Could it be that sorcery is a brand of magic branched into specialist areas such as necromancy and darker magics, whereas wizardry is general stuff? For all we know wizardry might be the light version, since I've heard of dark wizards but never light or good sorcerers. Although there are supposed white witches and enchanters that may use their magic for good. Prepare for hell on RuneScape in Naval Cataclysm!

I can agree with that :p (and we cant judge, we all play rs... and probably wish we could find people to do d&d with)

ofcourse, people arent necessarily going to make their wizards like established wizards and so on, so it could all mean nothing

Sorcerers are probably mages that have achieved runelessness via some means, whether dark pacts in the case of dark wizards and necromancers, or by getting a crapload of power somehow (Nomad) or by being innately runeless like a Mahjarrat. Idk, that's how I've always seen it.
So sorcery is probably working magic without the use of runestones, instead using things like charms, bones, trinkets, and other sources of power. Dunno about the Moonclan tho. Maybe because sorcery has a darker connotation, and we just don't think of the Moonclan that way?

In terms of terminology,

• Magician comes from the Ancient Greek word, 'Magos'.
• Wizard comes from the Middle English word, 'Wys' which means wise and was later used as someone who wields a magic power.
• Sorceror comes from the Latin word, 'sortiarius', which means one who influences fate or fortune.

I've always assumed that 'wizard' is associated with an innate talent or ingenuity. For example, when you say "You're a wizard at this" has a different connotation to "He's such a magician". If I said someone was such a magician, I would assume that he would be very good at tricks.

Sorcery seems rather ambiguous. In the past, elements were associated with wizardy and less commonly, magicians. You always expect a Fire Wizard or Lightning Mage but when I think of Fire Sorceror I always feel like it's off. You would usually say, a 'Dark Sorceror' or 'Evil Sorceror'.

I believe sorcerory involves something beyond the realms of ordinary elemental magic, and something that dwells deeper into the Abyss or occasionally, something sinister. ,

Ya know, that got me thinking. Thormac's a sorcerer isn't he? I don't see him using combat magic, but stuff more based towards utility with the staff enchanting. Same with the Sorceress from the garden minigame. So maybe it's more like...

* Wizardry = general all around magic. Covers everything, but doesn't specialize too heavily into a particular field unless otherwise noted (ex: a wizard from the tower/mages guild vs something like a necromancer)

* Sorcery = focused on things like enchanting and the like. Possibly includes teleportation if we take Hannibus' quote at face value.

* Witchcraft = potions and...maybe low level curses? Seems like the witches we've had significant interactions with so far were just standing around mixing stuff up in cauldrons or being generically evil with their magic and all that.

* Occultist = possibly ritualistic in nature? Like, less runestones and magic words and more like setting up specific diagrams with specific ingredients and such to get a desired result (ex: Zu Zu)

I'm sure I'm probably missing something here. It's kinda hard to tell when I'm trying to remember some of these characters and what they did over the span of a freaking decade :@
