I am currently training my melee stats controlled with a whip and recently was given 152 Turoth* as my slayer task... I can of course use the leaf-bladed spear for this, despite being much less effective than the leaf-bladed sword + shield/defender.
I was surprised to find that you cannot poison the leaf-bladed spear. Is there any reason for this? The only thing going for the original Turoth/Kurask melee slaying weapon is that it can be used to train controlled. Other than for that reason, the spear offers no other incentive to use. Allowing us to poison the spear would give it some more umph and make it slightly more effective, although still not as effective as the sword + shield/defender combo.
Turoths and Kurasks are not a well liked task across the community, so I ask, could this small change be made to allow players to poison their leaf-bladed spears for use against these two disliked slayer tasks? If the monsters themselves are immune to poison, this would need to be changed too along with adding poison to the spear, otherwise there would be no point.
Another option would be to convert the spear into a one-handed hasta (or allowing players to convert a leaf-bladed spear into a leaf-bladed hasta, perhaps with slayer points), allowing a shield slot item to be used in the same way as with the sword. A speed boost would then completely bring it up to the same level as the sword, and as the sword is only 45k* on the G.E., it's not exactly hard to get hold of for non-ironman players. Ironman accounts would still benefit from a leaf-bladed sword drop as the spear/hasta would still only train controlled or defensive.
I would say Hasta + Poisoning or Hasta + Speed boost would be best options, but not all three, otherwise it would better the sword somewhat.
