1) It gives players a bit of customizability. It encourages JaGex to make more cosmetics. what's wrong with that?
2) Technically yes. But it IS paying in a cash shop for items which is fine if it doesn't break the game or flat out remove content blocks for people. SoF kinda does this but there is no guarantee you will get the exp lamps you need so you end up spending TONS of money and getting nothing or very few of what you want. balancing it out, plus the 2 free spins.
3) A valid point, but at the same time, in the time it takes to get a 99 for say a cape you want, or reach that smithing/crafting level, you could have most likely made the 5$ for that cosmetic item. Remember a 99 can take a good 80+ hours of grinding to get, that's about 2 full time job paychecks.
4) Maple Story is actually extremely successful, one of Nexon's biggest games, they also have Combat Arms, Mabinogi, Dungeon Fighter Online, among others, they have payshops, but why is your example of cash shops done wrong Maplestory, the most popular of them?
5) They still get a cut, they hold shares, they don't flat out own them last I checked.
6) They have teams working on multiple areas, one for payshop stuff, another for quests, they are spreading out and building funds for more "Ooomph" to their content.
7) See 2.

Man I miss the good old days from 06-09. That is when I had the best times. These days all I see are people betting their lives away at the GE and scamming people left and right. There is a different feel in the RS community. I remember a much more friendlier time than what we have today. The whole face of this game is changing and it's heading down a very dark road and I think that at this point it's probably too late to turn around. The only way this game could start to make a comeback would be the immediate termination of SoF and Solomon's Shop. And if I may add with all of Jagex's "Hard Work" on all of these "Amazing" new updates they have totally forgotten about that bot nuke. I'm waiting but it looks like I'll be waiting for another long time. Greed. It's what this comes down to and I am very sad. This used to be such a fun game. Now it's turned into a different beast. Someone stated that all games run their course and this game has just about run its final lap.

@Its a spy:
1) You're missing out on half of the argument. There's nothing wrong with more customization, it's just that these customizations are unavailable as part of the standard membership package, which guarantees us the full game.
2) SoF doesn't balance anything out. The chance of getting cash and/or xp lamps is huge compared to getting the cosmetic items, as proven through various experiments. Buying 100 spins pretty much guarantees you a lot of xp and a fair amount of money (given that you sell your item rewards)
3) So you're saying that the cosmetic items devalue the hard work of people that strive for 99's. Your argument is that it's better to get cosmetic via RWT than it is to work for them.
4) Maplestory is F2P. I'm fine with F2P games having microtransactions, and I never said that Runescape was going to end up being like Maplestory. I was just citing an example of what the cash shop may look like seeing its similarities with the Solomon's store.
5) They don't get as much of a cut, and buying these things isn't going to help Jagex develop new items for normal players since the profit will just be put towards new Solomon's items.
6) This one wasn't about Jagex, this one was about the players that keep posting "I want this, and I'm willing to pay x runecoins for it" threads. With that attitude, Jagex will probably think that players want all good updates through Solomon's.
7) What defines game-breaking? For most games, it's obvious, but for Runescape it isn't. Runescape has multiple facets, and as such people could define the game as they want it. Most people usually think OP weapons would be game breaking, or having a large cash pile, or perhaps being able to skip quests. There are players who find a lack of cosmetics for themselves to be game-breaking.
@Phasers1: I wholly agree with that sentiment.

The most game-breaking stuff isn't even in solomon's store, nor does it cost any money. Things like the loadstone network.

Random Level 3: "Oh you beat the great tree and fairy's quest, did you? Nice but I also have a teleportation network"

-Back on topic-

I would say it was unfair that the emotes in the Solomon's store and as part of the loyalty program are much cooler that most of the skill cape emotes....but then so are many of the holiday emotes.

The games gonna change, and if it didn't change it would die, but when you do change it, people complain. If you make something harder, the lower level players will cry, make it easier the higher level players will rage.

I've already put loads of money into solomon's store because, like you said, Cosmetic items have value. I got a ton of attention walking around with the beach outfit and the umbrella an hour after they came out.

I'm 23 and I have a job irl so I already have something of an advantage paying for my own membership. IDk, some updates I like, some I don't, but RS is still my favorite MMo of all time.

^The game's gotta change, like the EoC, but this change toward micro-transactions isn't a positive change at all. Introducing micro-transactions as the only viable way to receive items that are highly sought after makes it unfair to those whose financial standing is not on the same level as yours. This isn't about higher levels or lower levels, this is about getting cheated out of your monthly agreement with Jagex about getting access to everything for only $5-7 a month.
Holiday emotes are available to everyone for weeks, and they're all fully ingame, as opposed to related to RWT. The lodestone network, again, is available to every player, so it's isn't against Jagex's basic principles (even though I personally dislike it).
