Both are true, but adapting dosnt have to mean conforming. RuneScape will have to change to keep up with more modern games, yes. But there is a fine line here, and it has been crossed. For instance, I love the new graphics, EoC, and many other recent/future updates. But if RuneScape/Jagex continues to trade their originality and unique features off at this rate, RuneScape WILL become just like every other halfassed mmo out there. Up until now, RuneScape has been in its own league. You couldnt compare it to other popular games, because it simply wasnt anything like them. (It was different, and simply better) But if Jagex turns RuneScape into a standardized commercial online game, then quite frankly, MapleStory and WoW do it better, and the reason I (and so many others) prefer RuneScape INSTEAD of other games will be gone.
