It's been summer for a long time in Gilienor, Mod William? The writing skills of the new Jagex staff are as bad as the content ideas.
Online games and MMORPGs have come to a sad state when players equate purchasing cosmetic items to enjoyment of a game. I think you just have to look at the state of the J Cup this year, the incredible lack of competition, to realize that the type of content that is added to Runescape in the last year/couple of years has not created an exciting format that is drawing quality players to the game.
I know one might say cosmetic items add to the role-playing aspect of the game, but from my observation that is not happening at all. There is no content to encourage role-playing, this is simply dress up.
Ideas and lore develop for short-lived quest moments then are lost from the game for a couple of years til the next quest in a line is released. There is no continuity, there is no real meaning behind the associations of the NPC's, and this dress-up in no way replaces quality ideas that are needed for quality role-playing.
I hear a few people say Jagex has to create these kind of micro-transactions to stay competitive and keep with other games. Keep up? They need to keep up with the downward spiral of the industry? This is not evolution, it is regression. There is such a thing as swimming upstream, but sadly Jagex seems to lack staff with sufficient intellect and vision to set themselves apart from the pack.
I actually feel sorry for the people that Jagex is targeting with their marketing. They are buying into an inferior product that does nothing to stimulate true recreation, which is what the purpose of a game really should be and what RS once was able to deliver. Buyer's remorse may be the only thing that remains as Jagex fails to develop quality "mmorpg content" to draw in good players. Now the major focus is on offering something that might look good, but has absolutely no depth or true value.
