I understand prices need to change over time but I will say that the communication around these changes needs to be improved. I would also agree with others that $11 for monthly membership is a bit much. I couldn't see myself paying that much for a game monthly (I still pay the grandfathered $5). Elder Scrolls Online tried a high monthly membership cost (with an even larger potential player basis) and realized that did not work. The reason I joined Runescape originally and not WoW was due to the drastically cheaper monthly price. I would not have considered playing for $11 a month. Even with mobile I think that will not bring back old players as is anticipated and the price increase only really hurts players whose grandfathered rates accidentally lapse.. If I were to lose my grandfathered price then I'm pretty sure I would not return as a member (and i'm a paying member since 2005).

I know Jagex will continue doing what it wants to do but I honestly would consider reviewing the business decision that was made and thinking through the potential results again. You may make more per player but if you lose players quicker than you gain them then the change was only harmful in the end.

Listen, I get it that the cost increase may be hard to justify for some people, but lets not forget that we are all paying to simply play a game! I look at it like this - I pay $8/mo US to play a game I really enjoy 2-3 hours daily. Even if my cost (without grandfathered rate) was $11/mo, that works out to the game costing 19 CENTS an hour on the low side. Where else are you going to find entertainment that cheap?

one thing I do find interesting, is that it is not hard to find plenty of happy and passionate Jagex employees. Every company has staff that isn't happy/thinks they are underpaid/etc, but I have had opportunity to interact with many Jagex people both in game and through social media and have found them to pleasant people happy with what they do. Although it may not be a "life" job for most, it sure beat doing a crappy job for crappy pay!

and now for my own genuine rant, Jagex should not worry about bringing back "old players", they only need to worry about keeping membership steady by adding new players. There is always attrition - 3 of my nephews stopped playing Runescape back in 2006, not because of quality of content or cost, but because they became young adults and discovered that life has much more to offer than just games! There are plenty of smart people at Jagex and if their subscriptions numbers start dropping sharply you can bet they will adjust their model accordingly.
