My experience.
I trusted my daily scans with an up to date paid for antivirus software. I trusted the free version adaware scans about every three or four days. I trusted my firewall. I trusted that I don't download from emails I don't know, infact I don't even open emails I don't know. I have never shared a PW. I did not have a 2 step varification on my email as I didn't know how to do it on AOL. And I trusted the Authenticator.
Several days ago I logged off of RS in the AM. When I tried to log on in the PM I was locked out of 3 of my RS accounts.
I was told they got me through my email account. I checked and it was in fact compromised.
I have to admit that I am not very wise to this stuff but I do not understand how, with just my email, they were able to get past the Authenticator and change the PW on three accounts. I thought the whole point of it was to prevent that.
On the positive side, even though they were able to log on to and tinker with all 3 accounts I lost very little stuff. I thank Jagex for that.
I now have my accounts back and have added a 2 step email account to the above precautions. Even though I lost very little in items, I have forever lost things that were very important to me and I will never get them back. Trust is one of them.
