Hmmm.

Well, guess what?

Servers are down.

I agree with the comments about EOC and its pros and cons; I agree with the hard-sell which many (most?) of us dislike.

I agree that Jagex can still do great stuff but in some way possibly try too hard and end up corking things up.

From what I've seen of this year it's been 'so-so' and the concern from many players is that the things that used to make this game an almost 'must-do' are being degraded/atrophying/vanishing and innovation is being replaced with the safe (i.e. 'commercial') option and that that is unlikely (extremely so) to produce a product that has sustainable competitive advantage.

Still, you've got a fair few good staff still but please do prioritise lag/servers/silly problems when taking ages to log in, etc.

Well, as it asked for personal highlights:

1st: Gop bots taken out (ohh thank you!) It was getting tiring after so many Years, finding it harder and harder to find a world with few enough to play a game without them in, most worlds having 40+ near the end, with a few with over 120 (the total number of unique names for reported Gop bots had just passed 19.5k, so you got it before 20k!). It has at least given the Clan the option to play Gop on RS once again, rather than on paper and similar.

~So I must say again: Thank you.
- You picked up on player feedback about this issue, and that is a big + point on your "Year of the Player" list.

2nd: Bots going in general.

This is so great to see! I can actually go a whole game session without seeing a random bot somewhere, though they still persist in fairly large numbers in some places, I suspect that these are largely just the areas I regularly frequent*, as when I go further afield, I rarely see so many.

* Runecrafting altars (especially F2P) are quite bad, at times 15-20 bots on some worlds, though it is rare to see more than 2-5. (not been keeping a list, as we did with the Gop ones, so not really noticed any patterns but I think they are being removed/dealt with fairly regularly, due to fluctuations in numbers).

3: No more gambling advertisers clogging up the *.*.

I enjoy this; there is less lagg, fewer annoyances, and I can rest easy in that people arround me aren't getting scammed or being drawn into a world of gambling (I still worry about how the SoF, albeit not 'gambling' per se, encouraging tendancies within young (and old) people, especially with all the 'get lucky' hype and the general graphics of it. I also see a lot of adverts when on my F2P accounts, that worry me (yes I have reported them, from other ID's) with online gambling promoted).

4: If this counts, then various things on the forums have been nice to see.

Though I'm not a regular forumer, I am friends with some who are, and I think I'll leave it to them to voice exactly what the best bits have been, other than to say I've really enjoyed them! :)

5: The Well:
What can I say? Great update, and you should be rightfully proud. I have seen this suggested many times in the past, but I can understand the problems with implimenting it (monitarily, as well as other things). Having another way to give, for people who don't have the resources to do so irl, or can make a bigger impact this way (or even those who just live in RS and consider that their life :P ) is wonderfull. I saw many people I know from Gop high up on the lists, so at least I know their many hours playing that have payed off and had some worth outside of RS too. :P

6: Meeting Brassica in game~
Ja, this is here, sorry :P I just really like that RS has not decided to completely outwrite its humour. I'm also glad that they've not gone entirely down the line of making him a 'joke-deity', rather than a deity of jokes and happiating (as a friend of mine puts it).
I think a big part of that has been finally getting some of my friends to stop going on about lack of cabbage in the game! :D
(though they're still comming up with lovely theories about him, current one being that he's a sentient elder atifact, and that 'The Vegetable of Guthix' refers to him being an artifact used by Guthix, and hence the real source of Guthix' power O-o)

7: The times when players have been listened to about things which matter.

I hope to see this continue, as much good has, and can still, come out of it.

8: There has been some really great content, though I still think that the update of 12/08/08 (and subsequent revisions) was the best one ever, so I haven't been experiencing much other content since. :P

Edits to all posts are to correct some of the spelling (missing some still).

9-10 and on.. just a few last points (though I will miss some things):

The NIS has had some great new additions to gameplay, and lots can be done with it. I hope to see it further refined and made more customisable, if possible, in future.
(It did cause a few friends on lower end computers to have to stop playing certain things, as size issues and runspeeds just pushed it over the edge of playability for certain activities, but I hope that will sort, one day, or they will have new computers..).

EOC... Some things I do like.. but a lot of work needs doing, even on the PvM.
I won't go into whether I think it was necessary, as it's your game, and you do what you think is best with it (you have more information than I do, and I'm just one user, so what I prefer might not be what others do).
There are some things I really do enjoy, though there are things I cannot enjoy which I used to.. bits of both worlds.
You've really worked hard on ironing out glitches and things, so I hope it comes down to something you're satisfied with and that people can enjoy all aspects of.

I really like the WE2, though I am saddened about the consequences, and there are extras that could have been in it, perhaps, there is a lot more than first appears involved.

These two relate, when you see the PvP aspects, something which I've never been all that keen on, though really enjoy in this event. Keeping vigillant at all times in much of RuneScape, aiding fellow players who are being attacked (without it being loot stealing or anything bad), making sure you cooperate, even with people you've not even spoken to or seen before you wander in on a skirmish.. those community aspects really make the experience more enjoyable. But the main thing is the combat scaler/evener: This is something I am very pleased to see! You have worked something which must have taken a lot of development time and coding, something I was worrying you'd never do for EoC, and something which ...!

could really help in saving time for reworking the Fist of Guthix minigame!

That was the main thing I was worrying about you having to cook up to make redoing this minigame a viable prospect; but now there is no excuse to remove it: The game will be enjoyable, playable, fair, and it remains an enjoyable game concept (it's unique in RuneScape); verry little time, comparatively, will be needed to work on the remaing things, such as interface reworking, counters for players till game starts, reward updates/overhauls (making them relevent slots in the armour tables again).

I hope this will add one more minigame to the list of those which would be quick and easy to make popular again. (maybe even save some time you can then use on making customisable altars for Gop? :P (lol, I know that wish is in vain, but I can dream!)).

I look forward to the minigame reworks, and hope that they are sensitively done, and only add to what is already there, without taking anything away, or demolishing established communities/making it impossible for new ones to form.
~ They are fun to play with friends (great for the new system proposed), but these groups should also have a cohesion and be able to interact, feeling part of a larger community for each particular game, and indeed minigames as a whole; so much more can be got out of games if all people can play and meet and learn, yet also keep sepperate when they need to, without that preventing them from playing.
Perhaps a (maybe this is crazy) further step into this "Year of the Player" would be to have various support groups in-game actually part of the system (optional use, of course) for parts of the game. It would then only require one person to check up on all these, rather than many to come up with systems and new things to deal with problems. I would have thought it unmentionable, but you have taken big steps in involving communities more, with ..

the hiring of the three video-based, community-oriented mods (players who were well known for being players, before they were JMODS), the transferring of the Community Roundup to player-control (good to see that kept running, and nice to see you accepting this; it may have been a choice between keeping it and handing it to volunteers, but I think it's a great move!), and the official supporting of a 'Newbie Help Group'.

All those are actually good steps, and I really hope they work well, both for JAGEX, and just for the sheer fun of them and the good feeling it must give players, knowing that they can really influence the game and build meaningfull communities here.

Perhaps, therefore, it isn't too much further to alllow other areas of player-provided support to be relied upon and endorsed (where appropriate, of course), or perhaps relied upon/consulted for future updates to make content more usable. Tutorials for one, could be made a lot more easily, and to a higher standard, with a greater degree of player feedback, especially from the communities who understand areas of the game inside out.

I don't wish this to be just suggestions; it's merely pointing out what has been good about this Year, and my hopes that it is taken a step further. :D

All in all, though there are a few things that concern me, and (as you've noted) areas like Quests did seem a little left behind (compared to usual), this has been a good Year, with many great things in it.

I wish you luck, and really hope things go well next Year, and then on; I wish you all happy times and as much enjoyment in making the game as we get from playing it!

All the best:

Some random nub who doesn't know how to shut up and stop wafflling!!

Dang, china called. They want their wall back.

(back on topic)
I don't think Jagex would even read their own thread anyways, so no use really giving feedback after page 1/2. I've never seen a post by Jmods designed for feedback responded to past page 3, and it's rare it's over page 3, usually an important update like bonds which receives more commotion from Jmods to respond/appease if you will.
