How about some more details?
Eg: accounts opened by month, accounts by days/months since last used, accounts by average days of play over their 'lifetime', accounts banned by month....f2p v. mems per month.
Do you count test accounts? Known bot accounts? etc.
If I was looking to see if this is a real record I'd expect to be able to see some auditable numbers.
Else I'll take whatever freebie you give me...but my inner cynic will LOL all the way to the bank.

nearly 200 million have joined! nearly most of which bots, so congratulations arent in order, bot kill off things dont work, you keep giving crappy updates(new combat system) congrats on ruining a great game guys, pat yourself on the back

What *I* find bogus are the amount of people throwing around numbers in this thread based on nothing but pure conjecture and speculation. Not one single person here has any idea whatsoever how many accounts are active or legit, so please stop saying, "In my opinion..." or "I think that there are probably..." or "Based on my calculations..."
Because, quite frankly, none of you are right and it simply leads to more hyperbole and histrionics. And that's been old for a long time, now.

Congrats on the huge milestone guys :) .
I'm very dissapointed with the amount of players who are being so disrespectfull towards the game and it's creaters as it's extreamly hard to create a game and to have it do as well as RS is. i've played RS for years and it is by far one of the best games i've ever played. so what if most of the number on the counter is bots or unused accounts thay still count so i say show some respect to a great game and an even greater team of ppl who spend so many hours of their life to making this an even better game for us to play.

Runescape has to be the best value for money muliplayer games ever. I've played RS since almost the begining. Great game, great memories and countless friends.
Congratz to a great milestone Jagex.
And to all the knockers. If you don't like it....leave, and try to find another game for the same value. I've got new's for you. There isn't one.
Here's to many more years of success.

Neither can I believe that some people are defending them in doing so...

There's nothing to celebrate here but an arbitrary number that is reflective of the amount of cheating and abuse going on in runescape.
No Congrats are due whatsoever...
